Apparently on the PS3 version of the game, unlocking the Insanity trophy can be a little fickle.  You could play through the game with your character on Insanity and not have the trophy unlock.  With some trial and error, I think we managed to narrow down ways to make sure Insanity will trigger correctly.  This way you won't get frustrated and have to start over rom scratch again.  Thanks to everyone with their suggestions on what to do

1) Before you even start a new game, set the difficulty to Insanity through the Extras -> Options -> Gameplay menu.  This way you never have to change the game setting at all when you embark on your Insanity challenge (so you don't have to worry that it's reading some other difficulty at the very beginning as well).

2) Once you start playing playing, don't switch characters (esp. if that character was being played on another difficulty level).  Unlike the PC version of the game, the difficulty level is saved in the system save and not with each character.  That means if you switch characters, you end up possibly switching the difficulty which will prevent you from unlocking Insanity unless you start from scratch.

If you follow the above steps, you should be able to unlock the Insanity Trophy on your first try (which is what I did on a brand new account.  Managed to unlock it on the first play through with that account.)  Thanks again for those who helped and everyone else, good luck.

If you look at your trophy list, because Shadow Broker, Kasumi and Overlord are in the Retail version - they count towards Platinum - only Zaeed is a non platinum as it is a download mission. You'll also notice there's no Shadow Broker on Insanity, check all the Shadow Broker terminals or Shadow Broker Assassin trophies :(

Platinum isn't the issue. Insanity is the issue since that's what I played the entire game as and it didn't register after beating the Terminator at the end like all the other ones did. So my "long shot" theory is maybe Insanity only triggers if you complete the main game and the add ons since this version is different from the PC/360, but I don't know unless someone else who has Insanity here tells me what they did to get it. Most likely, I'm thinking I'm just screwed.

Did you play any other characters not on Insanity difficulty over the course of the game? There are differences in the PS3 version of how data is stored, and difficulty level is no longer saved with a specific game (but uses the global setting). That would be my guess.

I hope that isn't the case because that would be completely stupid.

Can't see it being the issue of add-ons causing the problem, IIRC 'Insanity' is all about the suicide mission, from what I gather if you want you could do a 'minimalist' playthrough and still get it without having recruited the whole squad. I believe you can even have Shep not surviving the suicide mission and it'll ding. The scary thought is what Frangible said, because naturally if you did play another character on a different level, maybe as a break, as Frangible said, it probably has caused it not to ding? Though the way Shiratori talked of it, sounded like they grinded through the playthrough, which would mean just doing that. Hope someone can confirm what is required as I'm intending to do an insanity run myself having played through the demo a couple of times on that level, am just finishing off my Adept 'Veteran' run at the moment. Done Suicide Mission and just finishing off the loyalty missions I'd not bothered with as well as Firewalker, Overlord and a few N7 missions to get him to 30 on first playthrough of the game on my PS3. Taking a break at moment though after game froze up just after I'd killed Donovan Hock!!! >:( (not that it bothers me too much, save is fine and it's easy to kill him again :D )

I think he's on the right page here, even if you're not going for the platinum because the DLC is in the retail version you might be required to get the trophies for these in your Insanity game before?

I hope....

That would turn out to be exactly the case as I just finished re-running through the whole thing again on Insanity (with many shortcuts and otherwise skipped missions).  And...

*Ding* - Insanity
*Ding* - N7 Elite

I'll update my first post and the title just to give a heads up to everyone.

Thanks for the tip Fran.

Yeah, the insanity trophy all relates to the suicide mission, it has absolutely nothing to do with the DLC add ons. But that problem about loading up a different character whos on a different difficulty is absolutely horrible. Thanks for the heads up there.

I'm currently on Haestrom on insanity and it keeps freezing :( I'm waiting for the patch now, I'd hate to start all over. I've done insanity on the 360 once, doing it twice is already stressful enough, but to start a third time would be a kick in the teeth.

Cool, was thinking of PMing you to see if you'd noticed Fran's post and if you had seen if it was the case. Thanks for the heads up Shiratori. I was planning on leaving my insanity playthrough till the last of my 6 currently planned Sheps. Least now know need to concentrate on it rather than taking a break to play as others.

Oh and congrats on getting platinum :D

Skyline: Yeah it was a kick in the teeth since I was playing it originally nice and slow, unlocking everything in 1 run through (except Power Gamer obviously) and just trying to enjoy the full experience of everything.  Then I find out I have to do it all over again  But it wasn't horrible, just frustrating since I had done it on the PC and never thought changing characters would affect it.  Incidentally, it was actually easier going through it starting from Level 1 rather than 26 (but most people already know that) but at least I enjoyed the fully stocked Kasumi/Zaeed tandem.

Sir Ulrich: Definitely just concentrate on the Insanity run by itself.  Just don't let the Husks surround you.  And thanks.  Even having to do Insanity twice, it still was far less frustrating than something stupidly tedious like "Treasure Hunter" (Trapezohedrons.  Pssh.)  Good luck with your runs.

Oh... don't remind me! I killed big giant turtles for hours.
But thanks for the info. Will be starting to play the PS3 version shortly and definitly want the insanity trophy. So I guess I stick to one character then so I won't have any problems!

You mention something that got me curious, you said "it was easier going through it from level one", is it possible, I mean I started a insanity run on 360 with a level 30 thinking it would be easier but had to stop because it was getting very frustrating. Ended up never getting the achievement but I would like to get the trophy though. I'm not sure if I remember right but I thought you needed to unlock the insanity difficulty, by playing one run on normal, then one run on hard before the insanity level unlocked on 360, isn't that the same on PS3?

It was like that on Mass Effect 1. On 2, Insanity was unlocked from the start.

Sorry, i'm an ME2 noob (4.5 hours in) but can ye tell me when you clear the game, can you start a NG+ with the same character but just play on Insanity this time or do you have to create a whole new character and start from scratch to get the trophy?

thanks!

You can get it off a NG+ as long as when you get a chance to set the difficulty at the very start, it says "Insanity".  From that moment until the end of the game, don't play anyone else if you want to make sure you unlock this trophy.

Oh... I thought it was the same on the second as well. Is it really better to do the insanity run with a new character? I'm not sure if it's because of not having the save file or what but it seems the PS3 version is already tough on normal since it was a breeze on 360, on PS3 it seems the enemies are harder to put down and they also shoot a lot harder, it's like playing on hard difficulty =  They drop me in one or two bursts of fire, sometimes I can't even hide from them, those spiked blue dudes(Husks) very often surround me and once they do, that's it. My problem is the reloading thing which didn't happen on the first game, now I most often try to use powers only and try to save ammo, so now I got a bad habit of not using weapons at all... and end up getting screwed since powers has the cooldown thing. I really which they'd release maybe at least in form of DLC some weapons like in the first ME or some upgrade to the ones in game like upgrading the M5phanlax hand cannon

Short version (since it's beginning to get off topic here, though I'll keep is semi-relevant with the first point).

1) There's a bug with the NG+ in that all the weapons and armor you acquired within the game won't be there when you restart.  (Bioware is aware of this.)
2) The enemies do level up with you and after a certain point, they level up stronger than you do (remember, neither you nor your squad gets much in the way of ability points after level 20).
3) Coupled with 2, as you're leveling up, you are able to pick up enhancements for your weapons and abilities through research.  In a NG+, you may have Heavy Warp as an ability, but you have to re-research the enhancements (such as faster cooldowns, enhanced damage for the squad, etc.)

So those are some of the reasons why a new game can be slightly easier.

Oh, and there are DLC items to add new Weapons and Armor into the game (which since it is DLC, the armor will stay with you in a NG+ while you can access the weapons as soon as you reach the Normandy as far as I remember.)

Small secret with the Xbox360 version at least: Insanity means that Shepard only has to survive the SM, you do NOT have to do the entire game like ME1. I discovered that by accident, I got tired of dying (as a soldier) and did it as a Sentinel.
Also start at level ONE and NOT a NG+; level = enemies + 5 levels, NG+ = enemies START at level 35!

As I mentioned in the first post, it DOES matter on the PS3 where even loading a completely different character can throw it off, much less changing it in game for your current one.

I did NOT say anything about changing characters. Start a (new) game, Shepard = level ONE. Play THAT game until you complete the SM.

I spelled it out to make it a little clearer, but that's basically what I said in my first post.  What's different about the PS3 version compared to the PC version is that the difficulty level is part of the System Save, not the individual character saves.  So loading a completely different character that was played on a different difficulty will prevent you from getting Insanity with ANY character until you start a new one (be it completely new or NG+) even if you go back to the one that was set for Insanity all along.

The rest of the thread before I mentioned I got the trophy was speculating since I had done this before on the PC and was trying to figure out what, if anything, made the difference, even though I figured it would be a long shot.  Frangible pretty much nailed it though, which was why I re-edited the first post explaining what not to do (since I had someone else tell me they ended up doing what I had done originally which prevented him from getting the trophy as well).

What about me? I beat the whole game on insanity, no one touched my ps3 but me, no new characters created, difficulty not even touched (didn't even enter the gameplay menu), all characters survived suicide mission and...

No trophy unlock.

Any ideas?
