Leliana's personal quest, how do I activate it?

Now I am aware that this is a common problem, that people have issues trying to get Leliana's quest activated due to too high approval or because they are in a romance. I also know the patch was supposed to fix the issue. I have used the search function but I don't think I fully understand how I am able to garentuee getting the quest.

But I am still confused about how to activate it. I am going through the game again in preparation for DA2, I'm romancing Morrigan this time, Leliana's approval is somewhere between 50 and 70 (since she has the moderate cunning bonus). I was not only asking how can I make sure i get the quest, but if the fact i am not romancing her changes things at all?

I don't have the dialogue option about minstels and spies, her approval can't be above 71 to my knowledge, I have exhausted all dialogue options, including asking her if she misses anything about Orlais. I've given her every gift I have come across and it's this uncertaintly and confusing which is stopping me from understanding all this. I have checked several forum thread but can't find a clear cut answer and solution I can follow.

I'm wondering if I have fallen into the trap of raising her approval too fast and given out gifts when I shouldn't have,

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! =)

This is what I do:

At the first party camp after Lothering and before giving her gifts, I first exhaust all convo options to raise approval. Then, give her 1 gift and chat to see if there are new options. If not, give another gift and check for new options. Repeat if necessary. Once new options appear, exhaust them all. Following this method has always initiated her quest. I don't recall at what approval level it triggers, but it is well before romance mode kicks in.

That sounds like an good idea. Although I am not planning to romance her mind. I'm already in a relationship with Morrigan. What I will do in the meantime is try to raise her approval above 71 and see if that might trigger it off. Otherwise I will start again and take your suggestion.

If you raise her approval to high to fast you can miss the dialogue about minstrels and spies. I can't remember what approval level that was but I think it was before 70. If you missed it you can't get her personal quest. After she has told you about her past you should get a random event when you travel with her in your party that will trigger her personal quest.

Waht Manic said is very important: Travel with her in your party, otherwise the encounter that sets off her quest will not trigger.

I'd only use gifts if I couldn't raise her approval otherwise. If she's a frequent traveling companion, then there shouldn't be any need for gifts unless you keep getting disapproval from her, which only a more renegade warden should have a problem with.

The main companions that I give gifts to are the ones who are regularly left at camp or don't give much approval as others through dialogue.

Hey guys, I've made the mistake as well. When i figured out how gifts work i made them all loyal.

Can i still undo the damage? In example by giving Leliana a pair of smelly old shoes (again) ? I still have a save from before i activated the romance.

And, do other party members like Morrigan have similar quests like Leliana's quest?

Morrigan does have a similar quest that involves her mother. All of your companions have some kind of personal quest (minus your mabari), that mostly require approval to trigger.

If you have any backup save files from before you triggered this particular bug or any other nasty bug, by all means use it. If you have access to any pranks that could lower Leliana's approval, that should also work, and then try to raise it again, though slower.

I always have Leliana in my party. But I didn't get the quest because I never came across the dialogue about minstrels and spies. I am also not romancing her as well.

If you have the feastday DLC just use the gifts to lower the approval to see if it appears

Give her lots of presents and get her approval to 100 percent or close. At least 75 percent.
Talk to her and when the option to ask about bards are spies comes up, say arent bads sometimes spies.

Finish the sentences, then leave camp.

Come back and she says she lied about Orlais, tells you about what happened and the next time you leave with her in the party you get attacked by mercenaries.

The quest is unlocked.

If you have her in the party a lot it is easier to trigger.

Make sure you have at least 1 save before you do it though. I had a bugged playthrough this time and the option never came up to ask about bards.
I was romancing her and the conversation options started being just variations on I love you and I could not romance her.

I had to start again from a save before I started romancing her.

Lelianas quest is easy to trigger compared to Wynnes. I have never triggered Wynnes.

Honestly, there is a lot of misinformation out there.

what causes the problem with Leliana not giving her personal quest is if the romance is active. If the romance is NOT active, there is no problem. If the romance is not active and her personal quest is not done, 26 warm is exactly the same as 100 warm.

What causes the problem is the dialog choice that is needed to trigger her quest are in the wrong place in the dialog tree, so they only show for people who are not romancing her (it shows for people who are "warm"). Using feastday gifts to raise and lower approval (if not on a PC) or waiting until AFTER you finish her personal quest to start the romance (it can be done in one of the follow up conversations) means there will be no issues.

If you're on a pc, I do recommend using my mod Zevran Dialog Fix to repair all her bugs -- dialog tweaks fixes this particular one as well.
