I personally think the Alistair / Anora marriages for Human Nobles helped skew the numbers, for example I doubt many Alistair fangirls who got dumped by him in the first playthrough were going to sit idle and let themselves be dumped in future playthroughs and always did the Human Noble to make sure they get their everybody-lives-happily-after ending.

I'm sure the numbers wouldn't be that different without said option, though I'm sure it added quite a few percentages.

I am an elf. Always an elf. Usually rogue but sometimes a mage. Everything else I can watch on youtube.

I played a human playthrough first, and then found out later that most origins didnt change the story that much, so further serious playthroughs were with a human.

With the other races, I would play the origins and then stop. I wanted to see the unique stories, but didnt want to play through essentially the same game again. (barring choices I could make with my first guy anyways)

When I play a fantasy genre, I don't want to be myself... these games are made to be someone else, someone that you are not and on who you cannot identify yourself. this is Why I'm playing female or simply another specie like with my Male Dalish Warrior. I was very dissapointed that I wasn't able to pick the elven one again but now I'm fine with it, I'll just do like Mass Effect dans don't even touch one single time the male.

oh and Thanks BioWare for lesbian romances... I always did this except for Garrus in ME2, and only because he was funny like hell to watch. because that is something really enjoyable in those games : Unreal fantasy romances.

I played as Elf & Dwarf only to get achievements, then promptly deleted those saves.

Where in ME did you do this?  Liara's not a woman, she's asexual.:P  (Running gag, C-Hud called her that, he really needs to learn the difference between 'asexual' and 'monogendered'.)

But thanks for them in ME and DA, and now DA2, a lot.

Tbh. I don't like this 'gathering information' thing Bioware did with DA:O. I turned it off as soon as I learned it is there. My fav is female dalish warrior, but I played almost every origin. However my problem with this data collecting system is that it for example doesn't tell which playthrough was the most rewarding, most liked one. It's like watching people at what they do and then assuming it's what they want to do. I find that quite naive and superficial.

We're not making any assumptions about what they did and didn't like-- only what they did. They can't have a favorite if it's something they didn't play, after all. We can tell what choices people made at the various plot points, at what point people stopped playing the game... things like that can be very helpful, so long as you're not ascribing motivations to those players that may not hold up. What would be naive and superficial is basing one decisions completely on anecdotal evidence and assuming that holds true for the whole, or assuming that "those other players" don't count simply because they don't come onto the internet to sound off on their opinions. We can lead a horse to water, after all, but we can't make him think.

I still think there is one important factor that screws up your data:

1. Why and when do people log into there accounts when playing DAO? There aren't many reasons to do so. I for one haven't for a very long time. My guess is most people only do so to activate DLC. And only a small percentage of your customer base buys DLCs.
If you take me for an example the consequence is the following: the last time I was logged on was during the first week after I bought the game. What feedback did you get? One half-finished playthrough, only one origin story finished. In reality, I have finished them all and have completed the game twice. Your data collection machinery just doesn't know about it.

2. In general terms that means: except for hardcore gamers/DLC fans, you get incomplete playthrough histories from your customers.

3. Your data is therefore more indicative as to what origin your customers played first.

4. Your data on finished playthroughs is equally most likely very unreliable.

But these are probably things your statistic guys know far better than me. And I am behaving like a know-it-all.:?

In all seriousness, I think you know yourself that the origin stories were among the most emotional parts of the game. They were extremely well written and engaging. And that is what makes me buy and play your games.

I originally took a dwarven noble because they had the coolest armor, so I could break the typical dwarven stereotype by being a female dwarf rogue (I otherwise play as male) and because dwarves had magic resistance with no drawbacks or abilities for the other races to compensate (yay for metagaming!) and the dwarves immediately became my favourite race despite being among my least favourite race in most other games (probably because they don't have those earmassacring scottish accents or the lame "look they drink a lot of beer and beer is somehow funny, WHY WON'T YOU LAUGH AT THEM DRINKING BEER!?" "jokes"). The dwarven noble origin is my favourite and the only other origin that even comes close is the dwarven commoner.

I agree with you. I thought the dwarven origin stories both commoner and royalty were the best of the lot.  But I stopped playing once I got to Ostagar because I didnt like being a short squat guy for the remainder of the game when there was little mention to your origin throughout most of the game.

I think I've played Origins all the way through about 5 or 6 times. All of those playthroughs except one was as a male human noble warrior. I think it was something like this: human noble male, human mage female, human noble male, human noble male, human noble male etc. The human noble male playthroughs were basically exactly the same, except that I romanced different women, put different people on the throne of Ferelden and alternated between who killed the Arch-demon. The female mage I pretty much just started because I wanted to experience Alistair's romance and the mage Origin, but I actually grew to like the character, and played her to the end.

So, I think it all came down to that I could much more easily relate to the male human noble. Same race as me, same gender as me and I could even base his looks and personality on my own. I think that's the main reason why I picked a human noble so many times. I could relate to him easier, increasing immersion alot more for me. That said, I think both dwarven- and the city elf origin stories were alot more interesting. So while I would have loved to play a Dwarven Noble all the way through the end, I often got tired of not seeing myself in the character I was playing. Generally speaking, I'm one of those people that 99% of the time play a human in fantasy or sci-fi games, but I can also say that Origins has gotten the closes for me to ever picking a dwarf or an elf as my character in an rpg. I even played a Dwarf noble as far as having completed recruiting the dwarves, the elves and the mages. And that's saying something from someone who would normally not touch a dwarf or an elf as a player character with a ten foot pole.

Engaging and emotional, yes, but I almost stopped playing shortly after the Cousland origin, an origin which I liked very much and is my favorite, because I'd come to DA:O while playing Divinity 2, which had quite a bit of humor, and was thinking that the game might be rather grimmer than I felt like playing. Thank God for Alistair! As soon as I met him, I knew the game would be fun. And I haven't stopped playiing since. :)

I always try to play an elf/dwarf character through the entire game but the sterotype that such races are always sidekicks.

None of this particularly surprises me but it's still a shame to hear, as many others have said the Dwarven origins are two of the best in the game (arguably the Noble origin is -the- best).

As a guy whose main/first/to be imported playthrough is a female Dwarf noble (and a rogue specialising in archery) I feel firmly rooted in the minority right now!

I've done quite a few playthroughs of DA:O. Almost all of them were Elf. I like the human noble origin though but I don't usually see human characters through to the end. I've not yet played as a Dwarf. I'll do the dwarf origin stories for achievements though before DA2 comes out but I won't be able to finish the game as one. Elves all the way.

I'm not bothered about their being no race choice in DA2 though. FemHawke looks too awesome for me to care. I'm starting to like human characters a little more now though so maybe I should force myself to do a couple of full playthroughs as a human character in DA:O  :D

I thought it defaulted to logging you in every time. Can someone check this?

I'd do it myself, but I had to uninstall DAO to play Portal. Yes, my HD is that full.

I know this is anecdata, but my first Warden was a Dwarf, as were my next 2. I loved my dorfs! As for making them more appealing..they had amazing racial bonuses and you can make them very pretty/handsome, so I have no idea why others wouldn't give them a try! :(

Female City Elf Rogue first (completed) playthrough. Took this character through Awakenings and all DLC you warden could be in.

Male Human Mage second (completed) playthrough.

Male Dwarf Noble Warrior third (completed) playthrough.

Female Elf Mage started very briefly. Changed mind.

Male Dalish Elf Warrior fourth (uncompleted) playthrough.

Male Human Noble Rogue started very briefly. Changed mind.

Female Dwarf Commoner Rogue started very briefly. Changed mind.

Male Human Noble Warrior currently playing.

Those "started very briefly" means I loaded the character into the Origin, played for a few minutes but never got far into the Origin. Most of those were when other new games arrived and I chose to play those instead of continuing another DA:O replay.

I've played a Dalish elf rogue all the way from Origins through Awakenings and it was hard to get through. Did a female noble dwarf and made it to the end of Origins...that was hard also. Played the human noble warrior  through all games and dlc's at least 10 times...at 6ft4 it is hard for me to get into smaller characters. I would have loved to play a Qunari as their body type fits my stature.
Also I only log on to make sure my dlc's are functioning then I log off(too many annoyances on xbl when people want you to join partys and such).

I played a city elf first, then dalish, then human, then elf mage, and now both dwarf origins. I have yet to actually finish a game as any one of them though lol. I'm planning to beat it soon as dwarf commoner. I'd have to say that my favorite origin story is the (female, haven't played it as male) city elf one.

I was torn between playing a Dalish Elf and a Human Lord as my first main playthrough. Out of those 2, I ended up doing a male human for my first Warden. It's the only one I've finished, but I've been working on two other major runs so far as a Male Dalish Female and Dawrf Noble.

On my fourth play through, I've played all origins but I first played dalish elf, city elf, dwarven noble and now human noble.

I think what made me want to play the dwarven noble was to how it would affect the "paragon of her kind" quest. Soo I think some of the choices is to how you want to play the game after the first play through, I mean I'm noticing how differently people treat you throughout the playthrough

Ps. I have completed all origins though :D

Female City Elf is still my favorite origin, although the Dwarf Noble was pretty good too.

For me, part of mostly playing a human actually comes from tha fact that I'm an old pen and paper roleplayer. In my teens me and my friends used to play Dungeons and Dragons and the likes, and there was always two or three guys who always wanted to play elves, there was always a guy who always wanted to play a dwarf, and there was always a guy who wanted to play a Conan the barbarian kind of character. Over the years we all of course tried different kinds of characters, but I always felt like the only one who didn't need my characters to be from a special race or culture to make them interesting. So I usually played the human, and in stead alternated the backstory, class, age, personality, and goals of the character to make them interesting and memorable while other's clung to their sometimes fairly stereotypical views of elves, dwarves and wizards (not a race, I know, but still a common archetype).

So yeah, I’m kind of surprised that so many people played the human noble. Maybe I’m not alone in wanting the ‘less spectacular’ origin. I would have thought elves would be at least tied with humans. Then again, mages will always have a strong follower base, and not everyone wants to be an elven mage, so there will be quite a few humans there. Also, dwarves will always have a small but dedicated follower-base I believe. But as many have pointed out, the dwarven noble origin was probable the best story of them all, and kudos to Bioware and whoever wrote that origin for making dwarves interesting (again). One of the coolest NPCs in the entire game: Gorim. 'Nuff said.
