I know Casey Hudson revealed some of the ME2 data in an interview. We can always hope for something as part of the DA2 publicity.

Well, I think many people played more than one origin and gender, but I also think that people tend to have a 'personal canon' playthrough that tends to be their own gender (hence more male PCs in that more males play) and favorite origin. For me, that personal canon playthrough was human warrior (love playinig warriors) and female, and I think that was the case for many--the human part, not the female. Not sure how many people played warriors. Seemed like there were more rogues to me.
The thing is, elves were also very popular, and I don't think that the dwarf origins were less played because they were dwarves, but because dwarven culture is so immensely unpleasant. Some people really liked the level of emotion that evoked, but for others, it just wasn't very fun and the politics was vastly annoying. So it's really hard to say. Did people dislike dwarves or their politics? Did that many people really play only once or only play one origin? What a waste of an awesome game, if true!
I suspect that most people, when selecting their race/origin, didn't really have much to base that decision off of other than their base preference for how a race looks and the written blurb-- if they read it.
As for the figures we have, our telemetry is able to break down unique accounts that play the game more than once or restart-- and the figures I quoted for DAO are the number of unique accounts that ever played an origin, whether it was all the way to the end or not. I'm not going to start rattling off figures (since I don't have them in front of me, and wouldn't be at liberty to start handing them out even if they were) but I do recall the dwarven origins being 5% of the total (3% dwarf noble, 2% dwarf commoner). The elven figure was higher, but still a fair distance from the human noble and human mage.
Again, is that indicative of anything? There are a lot of reasons a player might choose to do something and you don't want to make assumptions about their motivation. And just because a minority of players finish a game doesn't mean you don't put in an ending. Still, it's better to work from hard data than conjecture or anecdotal evidence when citing preferences of the player base as a whole.
So, does this data come from people logging in when they play? If so, I think your data may be wildly flawed. I don't log in when I play, and if that's how the data is gathered, I'm probably in these statistics as someone who didn't finish even once, when I've actually finished about nine times. (Okay, that's an exaggeration. I've finished it 4 times and have another 4 or 5 games of various origins in progress. But still....)
Agreed. I played through completely 14 times and only logged in once. My favorite playthrough is Dalish elf. I never played the Dwarf origins or city elf. I played human noble, human mage, and Dalish elf.

I have played through at least 8 times now (a few characters I deleted early into game play because I had unknowingly skipped certain side quests and gold making opportunities like that damned Chasind cache at the start, didn't know about holding down the TAB key for instance lol)
I have only logged in about 3-4 times and I have all those Bioware data upload options unchecked, so probably none of my game playing info has ever reached the BW database, unless they have other ways of gathering this info.
I play mostly Human Rogue or Human Mage. I have played a Dalish rogue twice and an elf mage twice. Have a City Elf warrior on hold. Haven't quite managed to do an entire playthrough as a Dwarf. The dwarf noble origin can only be described as being stuck between a rock and a hard place - I couldn't make any emotional connection with the story, thus I didn't care enough to pursue it through to the end.
I tried playing a male, but it was awkward, so I always play a female character.
All in all, the human noble origin is my favourite origin but mage is my favourite class. I hear Mick singing it now: "You can't always get what you wantttttt..."

but i played every origin. 7 characters.
except human noble that i played 2 times.
so i can see that most players like to play as a human first.

Not everyone is included in the aggregate totals from telemetry-- there are going to be people like yourself who aren't logged in, for instance, or people who opt out entirely (which is an option). As with any statistical collection of data, there's a margin for error that's going to be based on the sample size... and in this case it's pretty large. I don't think we're too worried about it not being representative.
REALLY???
REALLY????
Why wouldn't a person even so much as play the origins? I can see a person not playing the whole game through as a dwarf or elf but why would you not even play the beginning?
REALLY???
That's like paying for cable, but only watching Supernatural. It boogles my mind. That like... wasteful!! The sheer waste. And these people complain about paying $60 when they are perfectly fine not getting their money's worth for $50?
MIND BOOGLING!!!

The 5% playing as a dwarf stat is surprising. I wonder what the percentage of people who played as elves is. I'm willing to bet it wasn't higher than 25%.

(btw David, any chance of revealing the data to the community? I love statistics!)
Doubt it, but I'm not the person to ask.
I am an academic and have actually talked to higher ups at EA about this type of data. Everyone is pretty gun-shy about releasing anything at all, especially after the blow-back that happened when the Everquest logs were released to academics.
Part of the problem is that no matter how well you think your data is anonymized, it probably isn't to some who is really good with statistics.

At the same time, remember that evangelicals who push your games, aka. us, have somewhat different tastes.
Personally, played all the origins, played every origin a good chunk of the campaign, but finished (so far) twice with two city elf females. I have a couple nobles who are virtually done, and one dwarf commoner who is almost done as well, I expect I'll eventually finish at least one noble and the dwarf commoner.
The origins that didn't work for me were the mage one and (to a lesser extent) the Dalish one. I felt very disconnected from the mage (fascinating origin story for Jowan) and the Dalish left me cold. City Elf female felt the most visceral, the dwarf commoner left me with the strongest connection to Duncan and the Wardens "only your champion", and the noble one, cliched as it was, left me with the strongest motivation to go forward and made me actually dislike Duncan and resent the Wardens.
Of course, in terms of gameplay I also didn't like magic, felt it made the game rather too easy unless you deliberately crippled yourself.
I make, however, no claim to have typical tastes (or even good taste, as far as that goes.)
