Someone from outside the dev team had probably taken a look at the script and asked the obvious question: "is there someone in the game who is not bisexual?" ... Jenkins, maybe?

There is even a sound file of male Shepard saying he's a woman. So just because the files exist doesn't mean they planned M/M romance.

Wonder if he said it with straight face ... and is there some link?

Bad press and sexual content leads to games being delayed, increased ERSB rating or even banned in certain countries... so yes it does hurt sales :S not by a lot, but still game companies prefer to play it safe than to take a risk

Okay here's my thing. I am in favor of gay rights and gay marriage and have no issues with homosexuality at all. But...a video game is like a book or a movie in that it's an author's interpretation of characters and events. Do people get angry when there are no homosexual/bisexual characters in a book or a movie? If so, there are a lot of people who must be perpetually angry!

Point is, a game is a form of personal expression. The authors envisioned it in a certain way and that's their right. If someone wants homosexuality/bisexuality in a video game, they can make one. I'd certainly buy it!

It's pretty simple. Somewhere in development, they decided to keep Shepard straight for the first installation, so he/she remained straight for the second.
And he/she will be straight in third one.
Shepard is a straight guy/gal. Face it. Deal with it.
The human ideal, saviour of the universe should not be gay anyways.
(Yeah, this is the moment you start giving me titles like racist, short-sighted, etc)

Quite the contrary. Your logic cannot be denied.

No one wants to be saved by a guy that makes out with and gets butt rammed by another dude. Pink frilly open collar armor, assless chaps, pistols holstered in inappropriate places, and biotic reach arounds aren't very heroic. The only benefit would be that the Reapers probably wouldn't want to cull humanity on account that a bisexual humanity would probably have the AIDS. Or Super AIDS.

Right.
Everyone knows heterosexuals are completely incapable of getting aids.
...

/facepalms

Anyways I don't care what orientation Shep has along as he/she saves the galaxy.

Ummm...so you'd rather the human race be obliterated than saved by a homosexual?  You're a genius.

ETA: That was sarcasm, lest the ignorant get confused.

How many games are there where you can't romance anyone full stop, let alone a same-sex love interest? I don't feel like I'm missing out by not having homosexual relationships, I feel I'm gaining by having the option to have love interests in the first place.

In any case, if a femShep nailing an Asari isn't a homosexual relationship, I don't know what is...

Everytime one of these threads pops up I start to get worried that people seem to think every gay person is a walking stereotype.

Then I read Jacob improvement threads where people want him to be a generic loud black guy and remember that this is the internet.

??? + ManShep

I agree that not everyone in the Mass Effect universe is straight, but this makes the lack of a gay option for male Shepard that much more glaring.

most people aren't gay. straight people would really get screwed over by gay romance options (no pun intended). just look at garrus. apparently if you're not a lady Shep all he wants to do is talk about calibrations. now picture this with every character that you used to enjoy talking to.

You have a point, certainly. As somebody who prefers the aesthetic of straight couples it doesn't really matter to me if the option is left out, but I'm not against the option being implemented. I'm just pointing out the fact that there are some gay options, albeit not for DudeShep.

Honestly, if I were making the decisions on ME3's development instead of Casey Hudson, I'd include at least one m/m option just for the press. I never saw anything about Dragon Age's bisexual characters, though, so I wonder if it would drum up any press at all.

Bioware knows that a decidedly homosexual romance option wouldn't be explored by most of their players, and therefore it wouldn't be the most economical use of development resources.  That's why the same sex romance options in Dragon Age: Origins, for instance, were bisexual.

Yeah, like GTA suffered in Australia. They had to remove any possibilities of being able to pick up and bone hookers, but you could still kick their faces in if you wanted to.

I'm just saying, it seems like the romance options take away a lot of the "talking to your buddy" feeling.

Yeah well the lack of s/s didn't help.

Garrus is already too busy with his damn calibrations. <_<

agreed.

Happy to have a (romanceable) gay crewmate, provided he's cool (Omar from The Wire), but not be able to gay up everyone. Jarring to say the least. Also what happened to just mates? Frankly there's too much Shep romance anyway, was more interesting seeing Kasumi have a thing for Jacob. Also I don't want to pick the wrong conversation choice and end up giving Garrus a reacharound. Not that i don't like Garrus.

Newsflash: Most people are straight. Therefore, the people on your squad will most likely be straight as well.

Most, but not all.  Is it THAT hard to imagine ONE gay guy?

Yes.  For a sample size this small, it is.  Statistically speaking a completely random group of 10 or so people is not all that likely to include a homosexual.  This is especially true considering that a small subset of that group are actually human, we have no idea if homosexuality actually exists in other species, and the Asari don't count because they are essentially asexual (they don't take other genetic material, they just use it to randomize their own, which is why all Asari look approximately the same).

Even if all of the crew were human, on the high side you're looking at a 1 in 10 chance (although I've heard estimates around 1 in 50) per person for them to be gay.  And that's assuming that the chance conforms to the percentage of homosexuals in the general population.  This may or may not be valid considering the occupations of your crew.  Keep in mind that a 1 in 10 chance plus 10 people does not guarantee a homosexual is present anymore than rolling a die 6 times will guarantee at least one three.

Basically it boils down to while I understand why you don't agree with their decision, Bioware not catering to the whims of a very small minority shouldn't really come as a complete shock.

Why hasn't someone made an editor so they can act like man shepard is fem Shep so they can have what they want? It would seem a simple editting of flags to allow man-Shep with Jacob or whomever.

As for default I accept how Bioware has done it thus far. It's their game we just play around in it.

My mshep is the only gay Eskimo in his tribe, and let me just say it's a very sad and bleak existence.

I would love to see m/m romance in more games and not for any lofty reason such as political correctness. I just happen to think m/m is hot. A lot of women do actually. It is kind of annoying how there's quite a bit of lesbian stuff and no man-on-man. It makes you think "oh this game has homosexuality" and so you're waiting for some m/m content that never comes.

What! There's nothing wrong with Jacob. People just need to appreciate him for who he is. The Stabilizer.

Why do people love to hate on Fox News but almost always neglect to mention the idiocies of MSNBC and other 'left-wing' programs? I find it laughable at best and hypocritical at worst.
