Can Rulinthrix (Gold Dragon guarding the gem tree in Bright Mountain) even be defeated? Was he meant to be insanely overpowering? I can't even so much as scratch the beast! What loot am I missing out on?

I chalk this up to insanely overpowering. There are some tough foes in that mod and I don't think anything is impossible.
Now, that said, are you doing Bright Mountain early? These dungeons are possible, but they will tan your hide in five seconds flat unless you're on the correct level or have good tactical skills. I really don't recall having any problems in that mod as far as challenge goes--it requires you to be on the ball, but nothing further(then again, maybe I'm just that awesome). With equipment, just make sure you finish the dungeons you start. The best stuff is always at the end.

You would be missing out on a rather nice item. CW is right though. Don't tackle the area until you are within the proper level range.
Also, if you are depending on spells to take the dragon down, lower resistance and spell breach are your friends.

Hi, to all!
I've been a long-time lurker here and have been more or less active on the vault for a while. I played and enjoyed almost all of the modules that have been created by this fine community. I still have to play some of the newer ones, though.
Since I just finished LoWPM yesterday evening, that particular fight is still fresh in my memory.
That dragon was really tough. In the end I managed to take him out from above. One of my characters was an assassin specialised in longbows. She retreated as high as possible on the "balcony" above the dragon and took him out from there. If he threatened to come upwards, hide, retreat, repeat. Took an age and a half but it worked.
It's a very class specific solution but it might work for any halfway useful ranged fighter.
Thnaks to all. This is a fine board that keeps me psyched about new releases way in advance.
Back to lurking. I leave you to your modeling.

Avo:
Kewl, that might work. I'll get a bunch of invis. potions and stock all my characters with a ton of arrows with elemental damage. Failing that I'll just come back at a much higher level.
PS. 20 lousy Emeralds? Geeez... how much does that work out to be? You'd think a tree made of solid gold and gems might have a bit more loot....
