Wow. The crew were written by lead designers? That's amazing, for the small amount of dialogue they got those characters were brilliant.

Also good to know how the friendship path works.

@Dusty

I found that I liked all of the crew members on the SR-2 since they talked about their personal lives more (Maybe they did in ME1, but I never noticed) and I think the worst part about seeing that trailer is one of your crew members' family was moved to Earth right before their colony went dark and he was grateful they were safe. I hope we get a mission in ME3 to save his family.

...The cabin cuddles with Kelly and all the love interests, as well as her playful dancing, were all a last minute addition, done just a week before content lockdown. VO had been locked down long before, hence why they are all silent. Should they have even gone in? Once again, that’s a whole other discussion...

An Open Letter to Dusty Everman:

The "cabin cuddles" with the love interests were much appreciated by this ME2 fan!  They were a wonderful surprise.

To give you context, this female Bioware fan found the after-nookie scene in ME1 with that game's love interest a bit disappointing and cold.  My femshep stood several feet away from her love interest, fully dressed, arms folded, and pretty much absent any sign of (*cough*) "afterglow."  She actually verbally cut Kaidan off mid-declaration with a dismissive comment.

So, it was wonderful to see my femshep (whom I had imported from ME1) actually smiling and cuddling with her ME2 love interest.  It was just NICE to see the toon with a goofy/happy look on her face, rather than looking annoyed, grumpy, puzzled, intrigued, or persistently heroic.  Even though it took two and a half or so years of game time, she finally got a chance to just ... relax.

Sincerely thankful,

A Female Bioware Fan Image IPB

@Dusty Everman:

Like everyone else, I too would like to thank you very much for posting in this thread. It is nice to have first hand information and it clears up a lot of things.

And I'm happy to find that I can have a fish-feeding friend without having to feel guilty that I might be cheating on Liara. ;)

Thanks for the informative posts. They are greatly appreciated. :D

I like Kelly cause shes completely normal in a sense that she isnt a biotic or a techie or some kinda solider.

She's just a regular person, who can make my Shepard feel normal for a few minutes.

Thanks for the very interesting post, Dusty. I think the designers really succeeded in getting us to care about the crew. We're all far too used to RPGs that pretend to a sense of urgency in story terms but don't actually follow up on that in terms of gameplay (simply allowing us to delay all we want and yet always arrive just in the nick of time). Seeing Kelly liquified rather puts paid to that. :-(  I could never continue with any game in which that happened, regardless of how far back I'd have to reload to save her.  (On this front, it's good that one can continue to play after the suicide mission, so one need not even miss any gameplay in order to save her.)

I liked the fact that it was possible to invite Kelly for dinner as a friend. My Shepard still cares about Kaidan, so romance for ME2 is out - it's nice not to miss out too much with Kelly as a result.  My feelings about Kelly tend to vary a bit from playthrough to playthrough, honestly.  At times I find her adorable and very refreshing in her positivity, and at other times I find her too naive and wonder how someone like her could have ended up in Cerberus.  (Then again, the latter question could be asked about many people on the Normandy.)  Regardless of any of that, she is part of Shepard's crew, and no one will be left behind if it can be helped.

All in all, I have to say that my favourite new Normandy crew were the engineers. :-D It was always a delight to hear them chatter. I also liked the two crewmembers (whose name I can't recall) in the crew quarters who you can hear talking about family in danger from Collector attacks that were evacuated by Cerberus. All these little things add atmosphere to the game. I'm glad you included them.

Yeah, I do want to give Dusty Everman a big thanks for posting some interesting info on ME2. It's good to actually get some insight into why and how things were in ME2, and it actually explained something I was wondering about the game for quite a while: why much of The Normandy stuff seemed so polished, while I felt other bits were somewhat neglected or lacking in polish (such as the N7 missions). This actually explains a fair bit and puts it into perspective.

So, big thanks to Dusty from me. I know I'm usually a little down on you guys and negative sometimes, but this was a treat to see and a good insight into not only Kelly but the entire Normandy crew as well.

Well, I for one would like to send out a huge "Thank you" to the Bioware employees who worked late nights to flesh out Kelly, Gardner, Ken and Gabby, etc. Those characters made the Normandy feel "alive." Without them, it just wouldn't have been the same.

So, thanks!

I concur with this. I think it's important to note that whether or not the goal of adding weight to the decision of entering the Omega 4 relay was successful, the characters added life and a little depth to the Normandy. This is a success in itself, to my mind.

It's like the old saying about life: "it's the little things". It's the same in a game; those little bits of content really help make it a memorable experience.

Well Dusty, it's great to see you posting here and with such honesty about the development process associated with Kelly, so thatnks very much for your time.

Doctor Chakwas, Engineer Donnelly and Daniels, and Mess Sergeant Gardner were on the chopping block (and there were other characters that did get cut)

Re the above, now that ME2 has been (and to some extent gone), are you able to tell us just briefly what kind of characters got cut? Even names and job roles would be awesome, you don't have to be too specific about personalities and nature of dialogue if you don't want to!

Thanks in advance.

Alas, there's not really much to say about the cut characters.  They were mostly just concepts that hadn't gotten any dialog yet.   A few of them didn't really get cut, but remained as ambient-only characters.  A couple of them got merged.  The Kelly we know today started out in concept as  two separate characters, code named ensign_cutie and ensign_threesome.  A couple other were cut outright, but I don't want to mention them cause the ideas might get used for ME3.

Surely it's a bad sign when some of the best writing wasn't done by the writers? ;)

The crew really added a sense of atmosphere to the Normandy and i'm glad they were included. :D

No its a good sign that Bioware's team is multi-talented. I'll bet some of the writers could design levels if they had to too. Image IPB

There isn't enough flirty males in Mass Effect. There seemes to be plenty of females (including asari, because they do after all look like females) flirting with Shepard, but rarely men. (Besides Harkin in ME1...urgh....).

Gotta chime in with the rest of the chorus and thank you for that insightful comment,  Dusty. You folks must get this all the time but it's not often a game developer's staff answers fan questions outside of formal interviews and the like. That you would even go so far as to voice your opinion that a design choice was a bit of a failure is testament to the improved ethics of a company like BioWare compared to, say, Square 'Everything We Make Is Golden' Enix. Next time you read a comment on these forums about some fan thinking you people do nothing but pat yourselves on the back, remember my response to this because you so aren't always like that.

And for what it's worth, while it's certainly true the 'save the crew or keep preparing' choice doesn't have the same weight as the Ashley/Kaidan choice (especially since you can totally bypass ME2's question by having done everything you wish to do before that point, like I did) I still enjoyed it.

Is it just me or was she just designed for people who want to keep there relation ship from me1. You can have some romance and it does not affect any relationship Shepard might have with someone.

Im not sure if everyone has had this option but i have a save for each LI, but anyway on one of my play throughs i pick Jack as a LI and I did the ShadowBroker mission and the end of it I actual got the option to get Liara back as my LI .
We had our date on the SR2 and I choose to get back together , but afterward i was still able to ask Jack to come up to my room so that Kelly option is not your only option to keep your me 1 LI.

Speaking of potential threesomes, does Liara say anything about Kelly in LotSB? I remembering thinking that she doesn't.

ensign_threesome... the mind boggles.

Thank you Dusty for those insights into the ME2 development. Interesting stuff.

I'd say that although the lack of polish on those Normandy characters is apparent, especially Kelly, I'm glad they were implemented. Besides making it feel important to save the crew, it also helped make working with Cerberus a little more palatable. Meeting all of those characters on the crew who seemed like nice people helped me to think that maybe Cerberus isn't all bad, and I could buy into Shepard working with them.. at least temporarily.

Huh, interesting dev comments. I had actually theorised that Kelly is a spy for the Illusive Man based on how pro-Cerberus she is and that in the opening sequence the profile of someone who could be Kelly is seen handing him a file, but if she was that close to being cut that seems unlikely.

On a related note, one Normandy NPC we didn't get that I wished we had was a shuttle pilot. Seriously, who flies the Normandy shuttle? It bugs me a little that we're never told.
