When I try to play Mass Effect 1, this pops up:

failed to find default engine .ini file to retrieve My Documents subdirectory to use. Force quitting.

I'm not using steam.  Could someone please help me out here? I've previously played ME1 before but ever since I backed up the game directory into a portable storage and reformated and then loaded it again, it didnt work.

I'd say do a fresh install from your original game disk.  It sounds like either some files are missing from the back-up or the directory structure may be corrupted.
