This just in:

"BioWare fantasy role-playing game Dragon Age 2 has a whopping 103 minutes of cutscenes. The impressive figure was revealed by the BBFC, which has given the game its expected 18-rating certificate for "strong bloody violence".Dragon Age 2's 103 minutes of cutscenes eclipses Killzone 3's 70 minutes worth, revealed by the BBFC earlier this month.Dragon Age 2 was cleared for release with no cuts made. Its age rating comes as no surprise. Dragon Age was a particularly gory role-player. After combat blood would remain on armour and clothing – which made for some hilarious cutscenes. With Dragon Age 2, developer BioWare's love of blood continues. Christian Donlan went hands-on for Eurogamer in November."
Sounds pretty impressive to me!

No words, BioWare (other than the one above). No words. Just... impatience wrapped in glee coated with excitement.

Are simple conversations counted as cut scenes?

How does this compare to Origins?

Very interesting question! Maybe someone at Bioware can answer that question: What exactly is classified as a cutscene?

Someone at the comments said Origins had 61 minutes of cut scenes. This would be considerably more. And given that the game will be shorter, the relative amount should be even higher. In Origins the cutscenes seemed to be where the larger sweeps of storytelling always happened, so I'm definately excited about this. :)

I doubt conversations are included? they are all done in the engine and would not be classified as cinematics?

So it's an interactive movie now? ;)

(Just kidding. But I do hope the cinematic sequences don't drown out actual gameplay.)

Indeed, let's hope not!
Apparently it will not be possible to skip cutscenes like in Origins either, but I do not have confirmation about this. Might be a rumour.
I can however imagine it getting a bit tedious on multiple playthroughs...

Don't worry, it's not FF XIII

Ugh, Final Fantasy XIII. Why don't they just make CG movies? The game practically played itself anyway.

I like cutscenes though, as long as there's awesome dialogue interspersed with awesome gameplay, no worries. Then again, BioWare's stories actually make some damn sense, so watching their cutscenes isn't the same as watching the endless FF cutscenes.

Didn't somewhat from BioWare posted here a while ago, that the cutscenes/cinematic experience is 1/3rd of DA2?

Yeah, since you could blast through Origins pretty quickly if you skipped all the dialogue. On a non-speed run, it would take about twelve to fifteen hours.

EDIT: 61, you say? Sounds about right.

If they did say that, I doubt they meant that literally. DA2 is not less than 6 hours long.

Watch your mouth, sweetie dear. Interactive movie means Phantasmagoria. (Which I actually liked a lot, but I think history remembers as bad. Or something.)

But hey, that seems like a lot of cutscene minutes. Hopefully this will be indicative of overall game length.

Now can someone please measure how many combat minutes altogether on hard, played by an Origins fan, for a first playthrough?

I love it now that the main character has a voice. If this was in origins, I would just get sick.

That's actually the way I've always seen Mass Effect and Dragon Age and I love it!
We got a new Computer in April of 2010 and the one before that was bought in '01 and never upgraded...so I'll admit that I missed a lot of good Games out there...but the 1st thing I said to myself about Mass Effect was how much it was like playing a Movie.
I, too hope the cutscenes don't overshadow the Gameplay...but Bioware really can do cutscenes well!

@Firky: Haha, I have nothing AGAINST interactive movies. ;D But I get the feeling I'd have a hard time wanting to replay one, presuming the cinematics are the same on every playthrough. If the cinematics vary between gameplay experiences/RP choices, that's replay value. :)

@Deathwurm: I don't know about ME (haven't played it yet) but DA isn't what I meant for an interactive movie. :) When I use that term I'm talking about a lot of cinematic scenes broken up only by bits of gameplay, and the cinematics are always in the same sequence. So it's like you're watching a movie and playing a lead role, but it will always end the same way (and in cinematic glory).

I'm sure DA2 will not be like that, if Bioware has been focussing on player choices/consequences as much as they've claimed. :)

You know, that's actually a very good point.

And, how did they come up with 103 minutes because we know playthroughs are going to vary quite substantially, right? Even just having one sibling or another should change this?

@ Shadow of Light Dragon...yeah, I see what you mean now...I was just blown away by the Cutscenes in general...like I mentioned, I had a REALLY old computer for years and was struck by the Cutscenes and how choices made effect what happens...I am not 100% sure, but from what I've heard you're probably talking about things like Final Fantasy?

I highly suggest you give Mass Effect a try...can't speak highly enough of that Series. It has a lot of great moments in it and (for me at least) the Cutscenes were a bit more impactful.

I'm not exactly sure how it works out, but I suppose they must have a custom-build of the game or something that makes it possible to review all cinematic content in the game without actually having to play it ?

Wait, people see an increased amount of cutscenes as a POSITIVE thing?

...why?

So you mean it might be total rather than one playthrough?

Yikes. That doesn't make sense to me either.
