I'm definitely in the +1 for cutscenes camp. Aside from Mass Effect 2 I've never thought gameplay was one of the main strengths of BioWare games and cinematics help alleviate that for me. The final battle with the Arch Demon for example would have been a lot less fullfilling for me personally if I shuffled up, stabbed it once in the neck, and then shuffled away. I strongly believe that there are instances where cinematics are much more fullfilling than traditional gameplay.

Amazing video Brock.

I'm actually surprised no one brought up how much time of those cutscenes will be spent in....... NO!!! I'm not even bringing it up or giving life to such a thought. Let someone else go MODOK over it!

No, we will not get a foursome cutscene with Isabela this time.

Fine, but I hope we still have the "Suprise Me" option...

Well over the 3 Xenosaga games there was over 100 hours of cutscenes, and up to 20-30 minutes PER cutscene. I realize those are JRPGs and Japan pretty much feeds from the anguish of people watching cutscenes before bossfights, die and need to watch it again until they go insane in a corner; muttering each sentence of every character over and over again.

Aren't Xenosaga cutscenes skippable?

*blinks*

...I'm fairly certain they are. It's been a while since I last played but...

Some are, some aren't. Xenosaga also has cutscenes that require you to mash your button to skip dialogues while also providing completely cinematic scenes that are skipable.

To be perfectly honest it has been quite awhile since I played both so I forget, but it still took a damn awhile (especially after fighting a boss for 30 minutes) and it broke immersion a lot to see the same thing over and over ^^ As long as cutscenes are skipable though, I don't feel it as breaking immersion but more of a minor irritation.

Eh, I've played and loved all of the Metal Gear Solid games - as long as the cutscenes are well done, and serve the storytelling, I don't mind them :)

As far as I know, cutscenes are not going to be skippable in DA2, but I may be wrong...

So, have you all come to a conclusion is this a good or a bad thing?

Just asking is there is a common stance of the forums on this one ;P

Me likes, another game that excells at telling the story (well the first one will be TW2 with over 150min of cutscenes).

But we shall see...

From what I've seen so far everything looks a lot better and more 'alive' than in DAO, especially conversations, looking forward to watch the game, as well as play it.

@hangmans tree: When has there ever been a common stance on the forums that everyone agreed on ;P

I for one think it will be a great improvement. :)

In general I like cinematic cutscenes as long as they're not very long unskipable and right before a very long bossfight. So I think it's a good thing ^^

Game play is more important, since this is supposed to be a game...not a movie. Most people skip through the cutscene clutter after they've seen it once. Not impressive to me.

I think I remember David Gaider saying about the telemetry from Origins that most people didn't actually play more than once.

Amazing news. I'm one of those people who love cutscenes. Bioware definitely won't disappoint in this department. I'm a movie nut so I love everything that can be classified as cinematic.

*blinks* This thread is not really thinking things through much.

First off, on the topic of Origins having 60 minutes of cutscenes...what? No. If you add up the romance scenes alone you get just under 15 minutes of cutscenes. There are thousands of cutscenes in that game, big and small. They'd have to add up to an average of 1 second per scene to make it only 60 minutes.

Second, depending on what is accounted for as a cutscene, 103 minutes really isn't that much. Just think on this a moment. Opening cutscene and intro, probably around 3-4 minutes long in total. Now say there are four different interrogation scenes in the game, each with two different outcomes and each, between conversation and chapter intro, clocks at 2 minutes (all a low rough estimate). That's another 16 minutes. Now say there are four romance characters, two bi, and they each have a 45 second love scene (about the same as Origins). That's another four and a half minutes. Just with these basic things we now have around a quarter of the cutscenes in the game accounted for, much of which we won't ever even see. Now add in character introductions, area introductions, epilogues, action events, all the tiny scenes of your character walking up to another character or object before they interact, etc.

Adding all that up, and knowing well we probably won't see around half or more of those cutscenes during any one playthrough, 103 minutes isn't actually all that much.

I think you misunderstood. 103 min is what you can see in one playthrough. You cant add up the same cutscene but with different companions, you can't count all the romances scenes in - you wont see'em all in one play.

We're getting into metal gear territory now, and I am all for it. Just so long as mooing cyborg biped tanks aren't involved that is.

No, you misunderstood. The 103 minutes is all possible cutscenes, it is not possible to see all of it in one playthrough.

Pretty sure MGS4 'area' as far as getting closer to that had cutscenes that literally lasted 20 minutes. Pretty sure that game tallied somewhere up to 19 hours or something horribly long. I could just be grotesquely overestimating that. That said 108 minutes (of which you may not see all in 1 play through, or maybe that is a full play through) is a pretty small fraction, broken up through out the game which will probably take 25-30 hours to complete. 2 hours out of even just 20 isn't that major of a difference. Im also pretty sure majority of there 'intros' and the like into chapters wont be 5 minutes.

5 minutes while it 'sounds' small when you say it is actually a long ass time for a simple story transition. They're probably more like 30 seconds upwards to 1 minute at most. I would imagine most of that is begining/mid/end quest stuff and lots of little fancy characters interacting with things mid-conversation like Epler Said. Which I personally think is freakin' sweet. Just thinking of Varric throwing the money bag and twirling the bolt makes me feel all tingly inside... >.>

In that case (if I'm wrong) that's not as big a number of cutscenes.
Tastes may vary.
