I hope they'll be skippable. Particularly the opening ones.

Curse: How much actual cinematic and cut scene content is there in Dragon Age 2?

Matthew Goldman: A substantial amount. That's got to be almost a quarter of our game, maybe 6-7 hours worth? There's so much VO work, so many trick camera shots, and custom scenes.

But, more is better, right?

Whoa, that can't be right?! 6-7 hours of cutscenes being a quarter of the game meaning the whole deal is like 30 hours max?
Oh dear...what have they done! :crying:

Nah, this Goldman guy can't possibly be serious...6-7 hours of cutscenes? Bleh!

ooh nice i was smart enough not to pre order...103 hours of cinematics in a 7gigs game???man i want to play a game not to watch a medival movie..lord of the rings did that better for me anyways

Dont over react or anything!!...

If you spend 40hrs playing the game 103 minutes works out to be less then 5% of your playing time watching cutscenes!     So the other 95% you can play the game and do something.

The way how I see it, the length of DA2 has already been disclosed as being shorter than DA:O and longer than Awakening, so either the cutscenes in DA2 has to become alot more reactive (different cutscenes base on different choices) or they have taken up a significantly larger portion of the game compared to DA:O. Anyway, I think we know too little information to know whether it's a good thing or otherwise, so I'm just going to refrain from my usual doom gloom until we know more. Hopefully, the advertisement campaign kicks in in earnest once Feb. comes around.

So it's an interactive movie now? ;)

(Just kidding. But I do hope the cinematic sequences don't drown out actual gameplay.)

An interactive movie with fast and fun combat?  I don't see a down side!

30-40 hours playthrough is standard in an RPG but they are talking fast playthroughs. For me, 30 hours usaly becomes 100 hours. Don't worry.

It's 24-28 hours going by Goldman, and they already said the game is shorter, so good luck squeezing out 100 hours on this one.

I did everything save 5 quests I missed in my last play through, and I only clocked in less than 60 hours, no dialogue skipping.

Eh, I am used to Metal Gear's 38 hours worth of cut scenes, (and I liked em).

So, this is nothing.

Eh...some of my favorite rpgs such as Origins, Tales of Vesperia and etc. had me clocking in at anywhere from 100 hours to ~150 by the time I was done with everything. I just don't want DA2, a 30-40 hour rpg to have any significant portion of it's total playtime being cutscenes.

Whenever I finish a Mass Effect playthrough, usually 40-50 hours, I'm always caught off guard slightly by the fact that the game is over already. I have more fun in games where there's always something to do and when I think that the game is almost over, something else happens and I end up playing at least another 40 hours or so.

It all depends on what they consider "cutscenes" to be. In Dragon Age there are full cutscenes created with the cutscene editor and also 'staged' conversations which allow the module maker to add different camera angles and more customization to a conversation than the normal default camera.

Also I would guess that you would not be seeing a certain percentage of cutscenes in one play through of the game.

Perhaps, just perhaps the 30-40 hour gameplay predicted for DA2 is after the cutscenes have been subtracted. Just maybe.

Urgh, I hate sitting through cutscenes. There were only one or two in Origins that were compelling enough that I didn't want to get up and get a cup of coffee and come back when the game started again.

103 minutes more or less don't matter much I think. Also for any who dislike them they can just be skipped.

I don't get why people are comparing this to Metal Gear.

Let's see, DA2 is what....~40 hours ? That's 103 min to a ~2400 minute game.

MGS4 is roughly 8 hours. 500 mins of cutscenes to a 480 min game.

No comparison.

I love cutscenes, so this is good news for me :)) but I just thought...will we be able to pause them? Don't know if I'm right, but in DAO we couldn't, things stopped only when I was supossed to pick a dialog option, right? Sometimes it's important, but it's probably difficult for developers to make for some reason, not many games have this option (or I assume they haven't and don't try to pause;) )

We cant really say how long DA2 yet since we never played it, never trust the word of the devs, they kinda need add some fluff...since you know, its THEIR game.

My general rule is take whatever the devs says and cut it in half, so my guess would be around 25 hours. But again, we dont know till we play it.

I think Christina Norman said Mass Effect was 20 hours long, my first play-through took me 60 hours.

Tales of Symphonia said 80 hours on the back of the case. 150 hours later, my buds and I beat it.

We dont really know until we play it ourselves!

But yeah, in the end, DA2 is a game that you do not play just ONCE. Duh.

So, have we established these are cutscenes that the player cannot interact in, or not? I've see no dev comment.

Just judging from what we've seen in the Exiled Prince trailer and the most recent developer's diary, this is a good thing, the cutscenes look really nice this time around. As long as 103 minutes isn't actually a quarter of the game time...yeah, that would not be so nice. I'm assuming interactive cutscenes aren't a part of that estimate.

Also, you know what this means, right? TONS of romance scenes. SCADS.

Uhm, this contradicts your general rule. But I don't care that much about how long a game is, I'd take a enjoyable, but shorter game with replayability anytime over a much longer, that I play just once.

On topic, I happen to like cutscenes, a lot. For me, in this day and age, games are a very visual medium. I'd rather watch the story progress then read it in a text box.

I'd prefer Portal over Persona 1 for instance.
