My husband bought me a nice 120G SSD and a new 23" 2MS monitor specifically for DA2.  Oh, and he encouraged me to give my GPU to my dad so that I could get a Radeon HD 5850... specifically for DA2.

I have the bestest husband in the world.

A question about overclocking: I'm running a AMD Athlon II X4 640 on an ASUS M4A88TD.  I haven't overclocked since before the kids were born, and (considering the kids) I'm more interested in stability than squeezing out the last bit of speed. Oh, and I don't want to deal with liquid cooling (been there, done that, too much of a pain for me).  Any ideas or can you point me to a good, up to date site? Thanks

Getting the game for xbox at first because I have no money for a decent gaming computer. But later on when I've got a good PC i'll get DA2 for that. By the way, in Finland there is a store which sells high end gaming PCs and overclocks them. At the moment most expensive one costs 5699€ (7825 dollars). A measly 2500 dollars still feel like much for a gaming PC?

Motherboard will be upgraded at some point, but graphcard was more important.

(my mom doesn't know I'm upgrading my pc, she's going to kill me when she finds out). xD

in idle mode your nvidia sucks up more power than the ati. with full gpu usage they are both in the same league and therefore a power supply upgrade is totally senseless... btw 550w are more than enough.

I am aware of that, but I'm buying a new power supply for 2 reasons;
- all my computer parts will be upgraded some time this year (everything is just old and I need better ones)
- the power supply I use now is making the weirdest sound, it's making a high-pitched noise all the time, I have to take the power off completely to make it stop (noise is still there when the pc is shutdown).

since my core 2 duo e8500 is getting a bit old (but it still apparently is able run DA2 fine) am in need of a new and powerful core 2 quad CPU, since my mother-board wont support intel i7. My GPU is a nice one though, so a my CPU is the only thing i need to upgrade.

I've bought a new PC for DA:O. Since then, I never needed to upgrade to play the games I purchased, maybe because these days most games are just consolle ports or maybe because I like to play old games thanks to Steam (playing deus ex right now).

So, I do not think that DA2 is worth upgrading: it's a multiplatform title and my PC should be enough.

Maybe, I will change the graphic card for ME3 but that's all and that's all you need to play a game on the PC, a good graphic card and a decent processor.

I wish I could upgrade. So I am:), but not for a few months

I'm saving aboot $1200, (that figure is going up; my 5.1 speakers are giving up the ghost after 8 glorious years, so I'm prolly gonna replace them), which I will use to build a *mostly* new PC; I'm saving my GPU 'cuz it's not THAT bad (nvidia 9800 GT), and hoping to use either the case from my current PC or the one from it's predecessor.
With any luck, (and B-Day moneys), I'll have a new, respectable PC around May.:wizard:

Already pass the recommended system requirements so I won't need to upgrade. As for Shogun 2: Total War that's a different story...

With all due respect to bioware and DA2, im not upgrading for this game. The only reason to get a dx11 card or whatever is just so you can get a -bit- prettier shadows or something like that.

If you want to upgrade, upgrade for Crysis 2 or something.

I did a bit of upgrading a few months ago, so I'm pretty sure that I'll be fine for DA2 without further assistance.

I am buying my wife a new computer for DA2. Hers couldn't even handle DAO, so she ended up playing it on our laptop.

Now that DA2 is coming up, and with our desire to play TOR together, a new computer is in order.

It is only a coincidence that I happened to purchase an nVidia 570 for my computer, and that she will be getting my old 285. :)

Replaced my 8800 GTX with a GTX 570. My Core 2 Quad Q9550 is overclocked to 3.6Ghz and is doing well so I won't upgrade that just yet.

I'm playing on a console, so I do not have to worry about upgrading, just insert game and play.

I did no reason to upgrade anything...until today!, I turned on my gaming computer to be greeted with...nothing, my monitor which has served me faithfully for nearly two years died, only weeks until DA II is released and it goes and dies on me!, but have no fear, I've just purchased a new HD monitor from ebay, sadly it means I don't get to use my gaming computer for the next few days :(

Nope. Don't need to. Already have an i7 core, 8 GB of DDR3 RAM, an ATI Radeon HD 5770 video card (1 GB), and more than 3 TB between all my hard drives. I think I'm set. :)

Yes... I think everyone gets it. It's really really easy to use a console.

We know that.

We really do.

I'm not upgrading for DA, specifically. I keep the rig up to date as often as funds allow. The cpu is the only thing still original in my rig, it's 2 years old or something, time for it to go .

Am I the only person in the universe who builds a top-of-the-line system whenever I upgrade? Yeah, you can get a cheaper computer if you aim for medium quality, but in a few years time that medium system is due for another upgrade whereas the expensive system is still high end.

Or you could buy high-end but not quite top-of-the-line hardware, and get the best of both worlds ?

This is what I do.  If you get "top-of-the-line", in my experience you get overpriced toys you probably won't be able to use because there aren't any games that make use of them, and by the time it becomes common for software to use your latest gadget, it will have gone through several upgrade/streamlining iterations and will be not so compatible with your older stuff.  And then I wonder why everyone with "better" computers than I have are complaining that games are "buggy".

I prefer to get some stuff that has staying power.  That top-of-the-line crap will probably break down and need to be replaced/upgraded within two years anyway.

I agree.  It is usually, with a little research, easy enough to find the "sweet spot" below the top of the line where you aren't getting diminishing returns for your money and where going top of the line doesn't add much longevity.

I have an Intel Quadcore 2 9650 Extreme @3.0 Ghz (upgraded from the Quadcore 9550 that I bought in 2009, which was an upgrade from an E4500 2.2 Core2 Duo that I bought in 2007.  In '07 my computer was fried by lightning.)   to my surprise the 9650 extreme still retails for over $1300.00.  It's more expensive than even the new i7 980x don't know why though.....Anyways, mounted on said CPU is an ASUS 77 Titan air cooled CPU cooler with a built-in heat-sink.  8 Gigs of Kingston HyperX DDR2@ 1066, an NVIDIA/BFG Tech GTX 285 OC Edition all mounted on an ASUS P5E Deluxe Gaming motherboard that has the X48 chipset and a max FSB of 1600 Mhz.

All of this beautiful hardware is housed in an Antec 900 series Gaming case.  My GPU runs at an average temperature of 35 degrees and doesn't get much past 60 degrees even playing ME 2 though once I have had it as high as 75 degrees but it cooled right down to 35 degrees in about 3 minutes.  My CPU sits idle at anywhere from 12 to 16 degrees and barely pushes 23 degrees even when it's performing lots of calculations.    My OS is 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium which is the BEST OS I"ve ever run.

I'd love to upgrade to an i7 like the 975 with a really high-end motherboard like the ASUS Rampage III Extreme and at least a 2-way SLI system..... the GTX 580s are really nice with 24 gigs of 2000 hz DDR3.  I've had nothing but trouble with ATI cards since I got rid of my Radeon 1950 Pro in 2007 that I bought to go with the 2.2 E4500. (the last GOOD card ATI made in my opinion).  Wanting to stay with ATI because of their Canadian roots, I tried Sapphire (the 2400), Diamond (2600) and Visontek 3450.... All 3 ATI cards totally burnt out within less than 3 months!

The upgrade of my dreams will have to wait a while yet.  Right now I'm quite happy with the rig I've got considering it only cost be about 1200 dollars --that's right, 12 hundred ... (you wouldn't believe the deal I got on the CPU!)  for everything taxes included.

I'm anxiously awaiting Dragon Age II.... haven't completed Origins yet just bought it in August 2010-- barely scratched the surface, but I love it... so it's got me hyped for the sequel!
