Can anyone help me out on my previous post RE: whether or not to SLI my EVGA 470s, or wait for a price drop and buy a single 580....?

I would suggest (if you can afford it) switching motherboards and getting an ATI 5770

They're 160 dollars, use less power than the nvidia cards, out performs most if not all mid range video cards, and they won't burn your house down like nVidia does

Thanks for your input but as per my original post on page 5-- I stated my reasons why I am staying away from ATI cards.  I've tried Sapphire, VisionTek and Diamond cards.... and they all burned out within 2 months..... I've since switched to Nvidia and I"ve been running a GTX 285 OC for 3 years with absolutely NO problems what so ever.... in my opinion and experience... Nvidia makes the better quality card.  But again, I thank you for your suggestions, and do agree with you that ATI cards are a lower price point.

Why do you want intel for gaming?

It's INCREDIBLY expensive for a processor if you're gonna use it for games

To answer your question... I've only ever bought Intel chips.  I don't like AMD.  Yes, they're less expensive but it's the old addage "you get what you pay for", from all the people I've talked to personally who have AMDs and all the reviews I've read over the years, it all says that AMDs while being less expensive than Intel-- they run alot hotter and over heat, and generally speaking the quality just isn't there in comparison.

So I'm going to stick with what I know works... and Intel chips have always worked for me.

But thank you for your suggestions.

$2500 for a gaming computer.
$200 for an Xbox 360.

Why not get a console?

you can build your own rig for 500 or under, especially if you shop around for parts and take the parts that can be skimped on from older desktops you might have lying around.

It is if you waste your money on intel

My entire computer costs less than the new i7 and i can run crysis on full with 40+ fps

agreed. AMD's processors are literally 1/4 the price of their intel equivalents, and AMD motherboards are cheaper too. How Intel stays in business is beyond me.

Probably because AMD is notorious for producing overrated refuse prone to overheating, and the people who use AMD processors are the same people who build a $500 computer and think they have quality? Or maybe it's because AMD steals Intel's architecture and produces cheap knock-offs of Intel technology?

I am an AMD user too and all this crap I hear about over heating is nonsense. I have NEVER had a problem with my rigs.

Sure, Intel is good but they are way overpriced.

Yep, have used AMD's all my life and with a 50 dollar aftermarket cooler I run about 31C on idle and 45 on 100% load.. not sure where the overheating nonsense came from..

And ya, Intel is priced to about twice what they should be.. They have great performance, but when looking at cost/performance, they're abysmal..

I'm probably building an entirely new PC late this year, just in time for ME3. Then I'll probably install XP on my current one to play older games.

Do not bother upgrading your CPU, unless its total garbage put your funds into a better GPU. Most games are more GPU-bottlenecked. Going higher than i5 atm will have little effect on your gaming performance.

QFT. I'm on 2.86 i5 duo atm. My Mates got the Alienware M17x - All singing, all dancing model. On Most game there's absolutely no difference.

I'm a little concerened with my graphics card though, only running a 250gts (this rig is nearing 18mths old now), may need to bump that up.

Been watching the price of 6970's fall dramatically over the last few weeks. Was pretty set on a 560, but can now pick up a 6970 for less than a hundred more! Wooo!

No offense but you obviously have no experience with PCs.

in all honesty pc, xbox360 and ps3 all have a different approach to gaming, pc much more so, not for everyone but some of us wont ever leave it behind there is a lot of charm in playing rpgs on keyboard n mouse, resolution, fps n graphics are also a great perc to pc gaming

Stupid stupid comparison. Yeah, because gaming is the ONLY thing I do on my computer. Right. Anyways, I've got a Gigabyte GTX 570 "Out for delivery UPS" today! Can't wait to get home and put it through its paces.  I'm going to be all set and ready to go for this awesome year of PC gaming that's to come.

Laptop yes, can't tell you for sure, however try the site below, and test your system against other games in the genre to give you an idea... hope this helps.

edit

In the live chat Mike said they worked closely with AMD/ATI on the DX11 effects. Probably made up my mind on which graphics card to get.
