Honestly, that was just stupid. I can't
imagine such a high vote except from mindless sheep players with a lack
of social interaction who like to be controlled every step of the way. I
was already a little bored by the constant cut-scenes OWNING the entire
experience until you're forced into a dreamscape where if you don't
accept a ridiculous loss you automatically get killed. What?! I don't
recommend this for players with their own imagination--it's pathetic.
I've played many mods, and this is the first where the ENTIRE experience
is about the author's wishes and not the player's. I have to vote as
low as possible to counteract the ridiculous over 9.5 vote--must be his
friends

What do you think? I've remember Azenn used to lose it on guys who would point out flaws (somewhat condescendingly but fairly) and vote an 8 or so. I don't ever recall anyone insulting the other players of the mod. And providing nothing but useless drival as feedback.

People are free to vote a "1" all they want but I think a line should be drawn when they verbally insult other players for playing a module.

Your work is making poeple react to it :)

Even if it's in a bad way for some of them, it's still mean that you made something right for your mod to be able to trigger Love/hate.

After it's up to the taste of each player.

I had someone vote me down because they didn't like one conversation choice a tenth of the way in when doing something that was optional.

Whatever. The Vault voting system adjusts for those.

Wow. He is even worse than the one kamal got. He also as much as admits he is downvoting to be a jerk even though he knows it is worth a higher score. It will even out in time though. I have seen durant (or at least someone with a very similar writing style and name) around and that is typical behavior. I do find it odd that he/she apparently played all the way through the rather extensive mod despite hating every step of the way.

/hasn't gotten to Islander yet

That was my point. Kamals 6 score is normally appalling to people (as I referenced above, some authors dont even consider legit criticism). I expected a few 5s or 6s in there and some reasoning behind it.

This is just stupidity. The complaints don't even make sense... they are actually the opposite of what is going on, so like I said its just some troll/insult. The vote should stand (I need to crack 10 anyway). The comment on other users should be erased.

Quixal they did not play, most of the negative reports come from players who got all of 8 minutes in.

I do get a kick out of the person claiming they are doing some community service by voting as low as possible. Clearly looking out for everyone else after calling them mindless antisocial sheep :o

Anyway I see some low votes in others... as in 5s. This is just idiocy, I don't see anyone elses as comparable that I've seen.

If it is clear they didn't even play more than a token amount of the mod I would say this is simple trolling as the person is specifically judging the entire mod, going so far as to put "entire" in all caps. I am sorry you are taking a beating. I should get to Islander soon and can likely at least throw down another good vote to counteract this. I am at a loss to explain why people do this sort of thing.

If this is the same darant, then he voted a 9 on Edinmoor.

Does this make Edinmoor the anti-Islander?

Harumph!

I suppose it means he is someone with very strong opinions of what something should be who judges to the extreme on the positive and negative scale based on personal taste rather than quality (implying only that he/she doesn't consider quality not that Edinmoor is lacking in it). He actively attacks the mods he doesn't care for and doesn't even really give them much of a chance.

I haven't played Islander yet.

I hate people who vote as low as posible to "balance" the votes in their favor. And their reasons are usually stupid, too (I don't get what he means with the players' imagination bit, for example). If I want it to have a 10, should I vote 30 or 40? Vote what you want, but don't speak for other people.

That said, if we take a look at the voting standards:

NWN2 Voting Standards
10 - A Masterpiece, Genuinely Groundbreaking
9 - Outstanding, a Must Have
8 - Excellent, Recommended to Anyone
7 - Very Good, Deserves a Look
6 - Good, Qualified Recommendation
5 - Fair, Solid yet Unremarkable
4 - Some Merit, Requires Improvements
3 - Poor Execution, Potential Unrealized
2 - Very Little Appeal
1 - Not Recommended to Anyone

I don't think this is true for most modules. 6 or 7 is sometimes considered a bad vote, and 5 or less is a rare sight if we don't count people like the guy you mention. 9 or 10 should be rare, too, but lots of modules are in that range.

I personally don't mind if he votes based on personal taste. But his tastes aren't necessarily the same as mine or other's. If you think it deserves, say, a 5, vote 5, not 1. It's as if in presidential elections I vote 1000 times instead of once, just to make sure my vote has a bigger impact.

His vote won't have an impact, the Vault system ignores the top and bottom 10% of your votes when calculating your average, and for precisely this reason. A certain percentage of any feedback you get is going to be inexplicably bad, thoughtless, or just plain ignorant. Just ignore it, or if it really bothers you, write a little comment addressing your design choices and the perceived flaws, so anyone reading your comment list will see your comment first and understand that the troll comment is just a troll.

Indeed, but personal taste based on the first few minutes of gameplay? If you are not going to play the mod, don't vote at all. I agree completely in terms of vote inflation/deflation though.

I have no qualms over the vote. But when someone specifically sets out to be an ass why are they even allowed to post on the vault?

It never surprises me that someone will find a way to hate a good work. What does surprise me is that an author sets out to do something free for someone else to enjoy and they repay it by insulting them as if they have been wronged somehow?

The holier than thou ending was the icing on the cake. And we are the "anti social" ones.

I notice while some of you are trying to make some sense of his voting, no one has addressed this:

"mindless sheep players with a lack
of social interaction"

How do you judge THAT as a any part of reviewing a work? After all he's talking about you. Was it necessary to name call other players to make his point come across? If I do that here Dunnite will show up with a beat down stick and a lock.

The same person gave another mod a low vote, citing "not enough trees" as one reason. Truly, though, the vote and comment he gave you was the worst I've ever seen. Quite undeserved. Don't sweat it, everyone else liked it.

Ya like I said, the only part I take issue with is the insults.

People have flown off the handle for legit criticism before that I would take in stride, and I am here to have my campaign called stupid, pathetic, and anyone who plays is a mindless sociopath? It seems the more tolerant you are the more insulting people get.

I suppose it never occurred to me to care what this person thought of us players. The insult is rather meaningless when you consider he doesn't know much about the mod.

In this case, you should be like the late, great critic Pauline Kael: troll back. If someone is going to troll you, and you think it's totally undeserved("Why's your mod got an island? 3/10."), then write them back a personalized reply. Azenn had the right idea.

I think, in general, giving a low vote requires *more* from the person writing it than a high vote. Let's say I thought "Islander" was the best mod ever and gave it 10/10. In a way, it's not necessary to say much more than that. I like what you did, so you know what you did right. A low vote, under 6 let's say, needs someone with integrity to tell you what they think you did wrong. I think most people don't really recognize how much work goes into these projects and how easy it is to write off what other people have done. I understand that we're going to have differences in design and that it is impossible to please everyone. However, people should have the decency to frame their critiques in such a way as to benefit other players and, more importantly, the modder who worked in the first place.

I expect my project will receive many low votes. I take this in stride, to an extent. Now, I realize you're concerned with votes and things such as that, but don't let crass people dictate, or even influence, your life. It's not worth it.

I'm not concerned with votes. I've made that abundantly clear. Downloads: yes.

Not being insulted from behind someone's computer screen for putting up a free work? Also yes.

I guess I will stop asking and assume insults are ok, because people keep getting fixated on the vote as if its some legitimate critique which it is not. And I've said twice the vote can stand all it wants.

You can ask Vault admins to remove the comment altogether. It may be aggressive and insuting enough to warrant it. In the past, revenge votes have not been tolerated either and that might be grounds for deletion as well.

Unfortunately I don't think there's an assometer application built into the system yet.

Time for me to go and vote I think... good module - obviously took a lot of hours of work to produce.

Thats good to know EC. The vote will do nothing either way but I would think telling others they are brainless if they download this goes beyond acceptability. While I am sure 100% of people could care less, who knows what the odd person might do when confronted.

As for revenge votes it is of course a given that this person has made no contributions of their own (has there ever been a hostile voter that did? Of course not).

By looking at it in its full context which you left out of your quote mined snippet:
"I can't imagine such a high vote except from mindless sheep players with a lack
of social interaction who like to be controlled every step of the way."

He's saying the mod doesn't allow freedom (and not just in that sentence but throughout his post). Whether you think the way he phrased it is acceptable or not you can't pretend he said nothing about why he didn't like the mod. I don't think he's insulting players at all here, it's not uncommon to criticise something by saying "only a retard would like this" or something along those lines and everyone understands it's not really the user that's the focus of the criticism there but the product, so if that's your only objection I don't think it's a big deal at all. I think it's also pretty clear to players who read the comments that when a module has a 9+ score and tons of great reviews and this one guy says it's complete crap, the problem is propably not with the mod.

Way to take the high road manageri, and try to justify probably one of the most insulting remarks ever posted on the vault. Do you have some kind of sense of accomplishment now?

I justified nothing, I responded to something you posted here, which was:

you can't please everyone.

If you got players to play your mod to the end of it, it mean you made a good mod, even if all of them didn't like it.

Some player are more vocal than the other in the expression of their feeling.
