Hey guys I just wanted to say that I feel that we have been treating BioWare with a little too much anger. Note: I am going to say that I have been fortunate enough to only encounter one minor bug. I can't talk for the people who have put over 30+ hours into the game only to have their file corrupted! However, I am sure BioWare is aware and currently working on the issues! (They are an incredible developer) Besides how do we know if EA is not the one responsible for this? What I mean to say is that EA may have rushed the development process for this port! I am positive that Bioware did not intentionally screw us over! Thank you for reading!   :D

They would get allot more love if they would at least address the save corruption issues. Even people who havn't experienced the lockups are scared to play cause backup saves don't even restore after a corruption.

Yes the game is awesome making it even harder to just shelf the game, all people want is community contact and assurance a fix is incoming.

people need to understand that fixing or/and patching a HUGE game like ME2 isn't something that you do in one day. You know how complex these things are specially on the PS3. You can get a hotfix for pc in like a week but if Bioware releases a patch tomorrow the people at Sony have to prove it then release the patch. So while I kinda feel that Bioware was forced by EA to release ME in January (no registration, no manual or extra art, de DLC's have some issues) I also thank them for allowing PS3 gamers to enjoy this game. I hope Bioware/EA make some effort to release DA2 without small problems that ruin the experience...

The game is great, i am not arguing with that, it's just that its like creating masterpiece, then start pee on it....

You are talking about small problems, smal problem is to fell of the map or your game to freeze, losing 20-50 hours of gameplay is no small problem it's HUGE, a lot of people returned their games because losing 50 hours of gameplay makes you give up the whole game and take your money back!

I'm almost certain that making the game to create different file for each save instead of putting all profile saves in one file, is no more than 2 lines of programming code....

Just read the updates in thread. Good to see communication. Now to dig through my old games and find something unfinished to play on my day off..... though I would rather be playing ME2 :)

I think the game should be safe to play with the auto save feature turned off. Just remember to manually save every so often!

Awesome game and story with too many glitches. Why didn't they resolve these issues before releasing it. It's ruining everyone's gaming experience. Bioware should resolve the issue swiftly for its fans. I think it would be a nice thing to do.

Where's the love? Ask again when I'm actually allowed to play the game. I'm not wasting 30 hours on a game designed to corrupt save data.

Well, I'm doing just than now. I lost about 25 hours and against my better judgement I've started a new game and turned autosave off, but what a PITA that is. I forgot to save during a long sequence then accidentally wantered into some enemies and was killed. Had to replay about 1/2 hour, ugh. You just don't realize how important auto-save really is.

I agree there are alot of angry folks, but when you put 50 hours into a game and lose it just like that it's not hard to understand where it comes from. I have every expectation that BioWare will take care of this problem for us, but am extremely disappointed that they lumped all the saves into one save file and did not anticipate why this could be a problem, given the fact that corrupted files do happen.

Could you point out where they've addressed it? I have no update download when I start up, and the only thing i can find in regards to patches is for a pc patch 7 months ago.

I've had auto-save off the entire time I've played and so has my girlfriend. Is there truth in the claim that this fixes it? I could have sworn I read either here on GameFAQs from someone who had it off and still ran into the problem, but I could be mistaken.

I can confirm, at least for me, that having autosave off or on makes no difference.
I had my main save, which was running with autosave - 35 hours in, froze on LOTSB mission, corrupted data.
Then started another character, with autosave off, backing up data every hour to both my PSP memory stick, and to a USB stick, got another freeze, another data corrupted, tried to restore the data manually from both of my backups - didn't work.

So the issue is deeper than just autosave, and cannot be avoided with just copying data to other devices.
If you get the corrupted issue, character, career, progress and time are down the pan - fullstop.

Man, that's a double whammy right there. Auto-save has nothing to do with it and backing up the data has nothing on it. What an exciting age we live in.

Thanks for posting AnoHeartilly, this is indeed depressing news. I guess I'll continue playing until it crashes again. At least I know what I can expect.  :?

Strange... I am about to beat the game and have encountered no problems (Knock on wood). I think I have completed every assignment mission and DLC mission so all that is left is to begin the final mission. @AnoHeartilly, what exactly happened when your data corrupted (not on auto save)?

I saw the corruption thread a few days ago and since then I've been backing up my data every few hours when I play. I guess that was all for nothing? I'm scared to play my game out of fear of corruption. Has anyone tried deleting the progress save (not the character/career file) then trying to load a backup? I couldn't care less if my trophies are gone, and the ones I have earned are synced to my PSN anyway so if I corrupt I'll try this to see if its just that file that is holding it back from being able to load a backup.

Yes.  From the corrupted save thread:

Grabeq wrote...

Today i made a backup of one of my carrier saves, deleted it, then copied back to PS3 disk. Everything was ok.

...

I run through another test. On my alt profile i created a saved game and then deleted profile file. Still could load my carrier. Although all my in-game achivments went to hell.  It leads to a conslusion that corruption of profile saved data should not affect carrier save game.

But that was followed by this bombshell:

Grabeq wrote...

Unfortunetly it seems that making a backup on flash drive won't help. One of fellow players lost his save. He can use backups of his other saves, but not the corrputed one. What i want to say is that he can't load a backup of character-save he lost. All the other backups work just fine. So it looks like corruption goes deeper than carrier save and backups do work when you delete your save and want to recover data, but not when file gets corrupted. I am lost.

This thread now seems to be the home for the most up-to-date information of everything that DOESN'T work when it comes to preventing corruption and/or salvaging data.

Sorry for the bad news.

The anger stems from the fact that people like me, who own both the 360 and PC versions of Mass Effect 2, can play the game for a 10 hour+ session with no freezing whatsoever, and encounter no loss of save data, or any game breaking glitches. Bioware and EA have both stated that the "definitive version" of Mass Effect 2 is on the PS3, yet, people who play the "inferior" versions of the game on the 360 and PC are having a much more enjoyable experience.

Bioware really dropped the ball when it came to their savegame file structure. A protected file for each individual career that contains all the actual .pssav (I'm assuming that's the extension for the Ps3, since the Xbox's was stored in .xbsav files) that, if corrupted, can wipe the entire career? Seriously, what moron decided that would be a good idea? Every time I extract package content from my 360 save to import to my PC, I shake my head at how unnecessary it was/is. What's the point? To prevent people from modifying saves? Surely that can't be the reason, because, like I've said before, package extractors for the saves on the 360 exist, and given time, I'm sure people will come up with them on the PS3.

I say this as an avid Mass Effect fan, who owns the entire series on both the Xbox 360 and PC, and is honestly shocked and disappointed that when his favorite game is released on another console for another large fanbase to enjoy and share with others, they can't actually play it, because all their progress is destroyed from some game breaking bug.

This all could've been avoided if the savefiles weren't packaged together in some arbitrary way to create a dubious means of protection. I can understand that you perhaps don't want people cheating to get achievements/trophies/what have you, but when you can't make a simple back-up of your savegame in case of events such as this, it really is just a case of poor planning, and putting your eggs all in one basket.

I really do still have a lot of love for Bioware, I've only reported the bugs I've experienced for their benefit.

On one hand, I was hoping that PS3 would get the most bugless version of ME2 possible thanks to getting it a year later. On the other hand, I'm getting to play the game with the improvements of the ME3 engine, and some bugs are to be expected on the new engine imo, as it hasn't been around for a year.

Bugs and glitches should be brought up for the sake of the best possible results in Mass Effect 3. But I agree with the OP it doesn't need to be brought up in an accusatory fashion. PS3 owners of the game are getting the chance to be the first people to use the Mass Effect 3 engine, which is a unique opportunity, but also one that's going to have the occasional hiccups. In the end, Bioware will fix the bugs, just as they did with Dragon Age Origins.

I think it's a testament to Bioware games that even with the occasional hiccups, they're still a blast to play.

edit: @Demon- I have to agree with you, I hate EA's approach to save game files. It prevents me from playing my save files when I've house sat for friends and relatives with PS3's... but even worse, when I upgraded to a 500GB hard drive on my PS3 last Spring, all of my EA games (Saboteur, Dragon Age: Online, NHL 09) had their saved game files rendered as 'corrupt data'. Luckily the upgrade was performed before acquiring Mass Effect 2... and luckily I only lost the hours of gameplay put into three games. But it's something I would definately advise people about before purchasing an EA game... if they ever have to reboot, upgrade, or replace their PS3 altogether, they can't back up their saves to a hard drive or flash card because of the way EA prevents save game files from being portable.

I agree with one CitizenThom. BioWare's narrative strength is still rather unparalleled in the gaming industry. I enjoy various Squaresoft roleplaying games (mostly between 1995 and 2001) but the writing is often problematic even if some of the tales themselves are no doubt impressive. Similarly, Metal Gear Solid is a good-intentioned series with a hell of an overarching storyline but its writing borders disastrous at times despite some impressively-penned scenes in other instances.

BioWare can typically be counted on to deliver believable dialogue in terrifically-crafted worlds. And with Mass Effect they've effectively (dreadful, I apologize) tackled the tough terrain of the sci-fi video game with remarkable prowess. Theirs is the gaming equivalent of the realms of Farscape, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. A combination platter of some intriguing fare.

Thanks, BioWare. Just get these big problems sorted out and you'll have a huge fan in me.

Bioware has regained my love when they announced the incoming patch so soon, that shows dedication. They will regain the unconditional trust I had in them two days ago when I have the patch and I check it works.
