Does anyone know if it is possible to bash open an unmagically locked chest? It frustrates the hell out of me to run across a chest I can't open even though I have a 2 handed maul in my possession simply because I don't have a rogue in the party yet.

Nope, you can't bash them in this gama.e You'll need a rogue.
*** SPOILER ***
I think the first one is Leliana in Lothering if I recall.

I found it to be annoying as well. JRPGs like Infinite Undiscovery allow you to bash locked containers and risk damaging their contents in the process so it's a real shame Dragon Age is somehow missing this rather obvious feature. Someone should mod it in.

I am frustrated that i can't shoot fireballs out of my anus even though I have a torch and my body produces methane.
Silly game.

The Carpenters Guild of Feralden have made it known to all members of society that any non-guild-approved method of gaining entry to a sealed box of any kind is forbidden.
After the example they made of Corselac the Foolish no one in Feralden dared to break that band.
Your character is no exception.
(Joking, but you can only pick chests as a thief and not any other job. Same goes for Disarming Traps and picking doors)

In other news, rogues and mages upset that they don't have any two-hand weapon or shield talents.

It frustrates the hell out of me that I can't wear my undies on the outside, BioWare, I demand a fix!

It would be a nice addition. Perhaps if it took a certain amount of time and you had a chance of breaking whatever was inside too. That way, it would still be to your advantage to have a Rogue with you but at least you wouldn't just be like, ah, screw it and keep walking by.

Here it comes, "OMG wtf bioware, my all warrior party can't open locked chest or cast devastating aoe on enemies! This is an outrage, and I demand that all other classes be hit with the uber nerf stick of doom. Also give us warriors the hammer of Thor, so we can crush gods with just one mighty swing! Oh why oh why did you do this Bioware!"

Come on. I could certainly live without it, but it's not an unreasonable idea. Indestructible wooden boxes that can only be opened by a certain character type are not particularly authentic or immersive, wouldn't you say?

It never ceases to amaze me the idiots who think that if you don't like something about their most favorite game in all the whole wide world, no matter how small, feel the need to bash and trash you about it. As Brentra said its not an unresonable request.

There is alot of unreasonable whining, ****ing and moaning on this board in general. I mainly read to get my DA fix while I'm at work, but... seriously, you guys make me remember why I don't go to message boards anymore. At least half of you people are retarded. I'm amazed you can figure out how to play this game.
Anyway, no, it's not an unreasonable request. It's not a bad idea at all.

What irritates me is there's not even a % chance that an enemy will drop the key to the chest in any random encounter. Is my character just too proper to frisk the corpses properly?
Not sure why I'm really complaining though, I've not found anything useful in a chest yet, even though I make a habit of taking Leilana (and her silly accent) into areas after I've cleared them.

Yeah, I have issues with the loot system in general... perhaps it's just being used to Oblivion, but it is annoying to see someone with a cool set of armor or a badass weapon and you kill them hoping to get it and they have... a lesser health poultice, and maybe 20 silver.

Keep discussion on the topic. There is nothing unreasonable about asking for a "bash" option. Note that the OP did not ask to be bashed, so keep the sarcasm and insults to a dull nothing.

not trying to hijack the thread but my question is if human nobles rogue don't start with the deft hand(lockpicking) how do any of the chests at Cousland castle ever get opened? after a level up?

Yes. The other option besides that with the human noble origin would be to have a tome (from the Collector's Edition of the game) that grants you an additional point at level 1 to use on Deft Hand.
As for the original topic of bashing chests - while I value my lockpicking rogue highly, it would be nice to see the introduction of bashing as an option on some chests for warriors and mages. Obviously those chests which must be opened as a result of quest or activity (which a rogue cannot picklock) could always be explained away as magically enchanted or made of a material impervious to weapons damage. That said, were bashing to be introduced there would also need to be some balance; perhaps a risk of an item contained within being destroyed ...

Couldn't we also do that in KotOR?
Not sure why they're so opposed to it... Meh.

If your character glares at the chests long enough, they will open.
