Interesting stuff about the Qunari. I dig the concept art. So they cut off the mages' horns?
EDIT - Oho, check this out and then the symbol scratched on the wall in this. That house could well be a mere Alienage slum, but the fact that the symbol is scratched over the Kirkwall heraldry makes me think of an elven uprising of some sort. They aren't the exact same symbol, but how dull would these boards be without speculation?
Actually it looks more like the dwarven merchant heraldry. I don't know what the red is on that wall because it doesn't look like the elven heraldry.

I think the Qunari are probably closer to Collectivists with Confucian, Turkish and Buddhist elements.

What, are you saying that the ones in Thedas are the only ones obsessed with eradicating every other culture in the world, and the majority of them who live overseas aren't so bad?asfaltowy wrote...

Does it sound at all like the Surface dwarves might have been retconed somewhat? I don't recall reading or seeing anything in DOA that implies they reform their own caste system up there. Especially since most of them seem to change their profession anyways. Didn't the Codex say that most of them become merchants?
Secondly, this is probably a minor point but if so many of those Qunari don't seem to be wearing any shirts or torso armor in the pictures, then why did Sten? do all or most Qunari soldiers go into battle with little to no protection on their chest?

Perhaps but how often did we see dwarves topside in the same company? As they say you may be a merchant with pedigree topside but if you see a castless you will still sneer at them.

And maybe its to fit in better? Sten is using it as camoflague and after he lost his own armour? *shrug*, as long as it looks awesome I don't really mind.

I think the problem is that the article uses the word 'caste' when it means 'class.'
Most surface dwarves are merchants but they have a class system based on the castes of Orzammar.

I am not sure if ALL of them are that however. I mean although most Male Qunari could be put into the army I am sure that several can become Kadaan for instance. But it is more likely that all of the Qunari in the "militant" sections are male, but that at least a few of them can become otherwise. Afterall I think Gaider himself said that the Qunari "don't waste resources".
Uh, I don't think Kadan is a title. According to the dragon age wiki it is: Kadan: Term for something one values highly. Or sometimes the center of the chest. (Literally, "where the heart lies.") The Warden is called this for retrieving Asala.
And yes, they say they 'don't waste resources' but they do have strict gender roles, I'm not saying the only jobs men can have are in the army, I"m just saying they probably aren't craftsman, farmers, or priests, or any other jobs that are traditionaly womens jobs in the qun.

So how does he stay alive if his mouth is sewn/ stapled shut..?
Remember that these are qunari. If Sten is any indication, they can literally survive several weeks without food or water.
So they only need to cut the bindings every couple of months or so to allow a qunari mage to eat a few morsels of food. Then they sew him back up again. Rinse and repeat for the rest of his life.
Qunari mages have it gooooooooooood.

The can survive without water and food. But I don't know if they can properly fight without food and water for a long time.
Howewer, the qunari treat their mages in a very cruel way, much worse than I believe when I played DAO, if the whole "mouth stapled shut" is real.

I'd love to go and hear qunari music. The mental image of a qunari bard makes me giggle.

They're mages. Even if they're allowed to fight, they don't have to use weapons.
In DAO, Sten said they cut the tongues from their mages and put them on leashes.

I know about the tongue and the leashes, but the tongue (could) have an explanation for preventing the mages to became abomination (altough I'm against this measure). But the fact that the mouth is stapled shut doesn't have sense. They can't even properly eat.

Limits them from casting certain spells and helps marginalize them. The pain they suffer from having their mouths closed is their punishment for being mages.
