What's your a'dam equivalent?

What?

Why do the Qunari mages obey their masters?

I can think of several reasons, but two stand out to me.

1. Beatings until morale improves.
2. A continued sense of wanting to help the community despite being a saarebas. (aka high morale)

Man, that mage just makes me so sad. He still has the eyes of an intelligent being and I can't even imagine what he must be thinking behind the scars and the stitched mouth. I actually find him kind of intimidating and almost difficult to look at. Moreso than the Arishok, even. Bravo, character designer!

I know, it is kind of interesting though. I wonder if their culture makes them endure that with a different perspective entirely than we as outsiders would think?   Some things that are considered unfair and atrocities to the world may in fact be considered differently by the "victims", rightly or wrongly of course...  Would be very interesting to know their perspective.   I am not suggesting they think its all glitter rainbows and dancing unicorns, but maybe they endure it not as much as victims as we might think.  Perhaps it motivates a survivalist-strength in themselves, could make them formidable opponents if that were the case.

Oh it's very interesting. I'm completely fascinated by him. Well, all the Qunari really, but especially the mages.

And definitely not viable as a life-long thing.

Actually, it is--there are people who have been maimed badly enough that they basically can't eat solid food any more and are permanently stuck with a liquid diet.  But you can drink your nutrition through a straw and still survive just fine.  Heck, one of my nieces had to be fed through a catheter directly into her stomach for about a year, and she's all good.

By viable, I meant mentally viable. Can you imagine drinking milkshakes for the rest of your life? Or attempting to drink your favourite food in liquid form just for a change in taste? And discovering that anything that wasn't meant to be eaten liquid tastes like crap? Or force-feeding yourself something you hate because you feel incredibly hungry and you have no alternative? If you were anything other than skin and bones to start with, you will get there very very soon.

*shudders*

I would've shot myself were it lifelong. Not that I have ready access to a gun, but it's the thought that counts

Re: Qunari mages. There's a picture of three of them along with an Arishok. No wonder they all have masks on and are cowering in fear, they've had horrible things done to them.

Edit: this is the screenshot I was referring to

It's a big deal, even so. Thousands of Dalish gathered in one place. One supposes that would make them vulnerable to an organized attack, sure, if one cared to take on such a large armed force.

Yeah this further fits with the whole "whos Champion is Hawke?" makes me feel we can decide what to do with the apostate mages, templar/chantry forces and now even the Dalish elves. Not to mention the possible Qunari invasion. =) Boy Hawke sure will likely have his/her hands on alot of events! Beaty of the 10 year long storyline.

That picture is from the Qunari version of Hamlet, they're all trying out for the lead.

I laughed.  ^_^  "Now get you to my lady's chamber, and tell her, let her paint an inch thick, to this favor she must come. Make her laugh at that."

I wonder if the Qunari did plays held in anti-Elizabethan manner, with all actors women?

That said, my blood mage wanted to hold a skull in her off-hand, or a grimoire/spellbook.   *dreams*

Maybe that poor mage would get the part out of pity, since he can't talk.

"Yes, that was very good. Your eyes portrayed the necessary passion and heartbreak. You will be extra #3."

It disturbs me the way the others are looking at the skull/ to the side, but the mage is looking directly at you.

Yes, but I don't really care what I eat as long as I'm not still hungry afterwards.

Good to see some female Qunari concept art, for once. Now to see them in-game... :)

Sigh.... It's not just that. No more french fries, or pizza, or chocolate, or cake or...

Actually forget it. Maybe it's a difficult thing to explain. Suffice to say they're probably not having fun.

Some is an accident of language: Few among the Qun’s people speak the
common tongue, and fewer speak it well. In a culture that strives for
mastery, to have only a passable degree of skill is humiliating indeed,
and so they often keep quiet among foreigners, out of shame.

So Sten might actually be the life of the party in his own language?

I'm not sure, but the qunari with the horns cut could be a Tal-Vashot. He doesn't have the mark on the chest, while the other three have it.

I think he's a mage. If you look he has his mouth sewn shut and his body is covered in scars from lashes.

Not to mention he is covered in chains

I loved on how Qunari society was personified with a living thing to show how it runs itself, and elaboration on the ins-and-outs of surface dwarf society between the two political ideologies. I'm disappointed though with part about the elves however, nothing really new there besides the new symbols, and I was hoping for some new lore like the Dalish hierarchy or something. There's so much potential with them.

So how does he stay alive if his mouth is sewn/ stapled shut..?

I thought it was some sort of mask.

I was wondering about that too..

Interesting read though. Very  interesting.

I read on wiki that they cut their mages tongues out if they rebel, so they can't say evil spells. Maybe thats what they've done but sewn their mouth shut as well (you know just to be sure).
