WHAT! Argh, I hate you EA, hate you so goddamn much, first the boycott of steam with the signature edition and then this....this blatant insult to the pc gaming community. Witcher 2, a rival RPG game I've already preordered 6 months before its out (and it does look much prettier you have to admit) is available with 0 DRM, ZERO. If this wasnt Dragon Age I would not be getting this now.

DRM this intrusive, this draconian detracts heavily from the game, and I can safely guarantee to you that for all your effort to build it, integrate it into the game, all your man hours required to do that it will have 0 effect on piracy. Your perception of piracy is strangling the industry, not the actual piracy but just the perception of it. Shame on you. And as a statement I will not be ordering Mass Effect 3 when it comes out.

Come on, that's a bit of hyperbole...

I have to disagree, I have not bought games due to the DRM, MassEffect1, Assassins Creed2, etc DRM that impacts me more when I buy the game than those who pirate it is wrong. So far all DRM has only proved to be a pain for end users not pirates who have yet failed to crack anything. I will not buy games that insult me as a user and make it harder to play the game I bought and paid for with my hard earned money. I stand by what I said.

It really does bother me that when they told us about the DRM before, they added the caveat that they weren't sure whether or not the DRM they reported was final. They said they were still discussing what the final implementation would be. The game went gold a few days ago. I consider it highly unlikely they don't know what system they went with when they shipped the game to the manufacturer. Also, they know many fans are very frustrated with the uncertainty. Despite this, they still haven't told us what they decided.

As I predicted, DRM implementation gets decided at the very last stage of development, and this decision is always rushed.

It is a general behaviour in all the industry..., however, that doesn´t mean it is well done.

And the lack of confirmation about periodical online checking ...

Still no new info on that? Eh, I am reluctant to pre-oreder until I know details.

Don't really want it from Steam, but that's looking like my best option at the minute.

I have been monitoring and testing DRM´s since 2006 and believe me... this is NOT my biggest worry but the Release Control manufacturer.....

Look what EA did in Dead Space 2. Putting Securom without notification...

I hope EA isn´t overplaying its hand with Bioware, because they will have unfortunate news for disobeying a court order... (notification and disclosing of DRM imperative)

No point in discussing now. As the Goldmaster is already done.

EA added Securom to Dead Space 2 , wasnt Dead Space 2 using solidshield like Dragon Age 2 <_<

I wonder if Bioware can change the phone home bit at their end :?

You won't believe this, but apparently Dead Space 2 retail disks have both Solid Shield AND SecuROM!

Anyway, if I don't hear anything official in the next few days, regarding the Dragon Age 2 DRM, I'm cancelling my Signature Edition pre-order.

I went through too much crap with SecuROM on my previous PC, to allow it anywhere near my new rig. It may not knacker my new PC, but I'm not taking any chances and to be honest, I don't feel like rewarding any developer/publisher that utilizes the malware that caused me so much grief in the past!

(For anyone who's interested, the problems I encountered were destroyed firmware on the PC's DVD drives, random blue screens and general instability.)

I'm not too bothered about the online activation thing, but I HAVE to know whether it includes SecuROM or not. My purchase depends upon it!

Haven't they already said earlier in this thread that it won't include SecuROM. The only issue is whether it will include the authentication check every few days.

I have read 16 pages worth of threads and I haven't seen anything confirming or denying the existence of SecuROM, or ANY definitive statement on the nature of the DRM for that matter! That's what all these people have been asking for all this time...CLARIFICATION!

Anyway, SecuROM was slipped into Dead Space 2 at the last second without informing anyone, so maybe I shouldn't take any chances, unless someone from Bioware comes on this thread and categorically denies that it will be included in Dragon Age II.

Sorry if anyone from Bioware is offended by my bluntness. I humbly request that there is a definitive statement on the nature of the DRM in this game, now that it has gone gold...pretty please!

EA only disclosed Solidshield in Dead Space 2. It is a possibility that EA has not provided all the info to Bioware. (I´ve seen those things between devs and publishing staff A LOT)

And if I am right, I´m afraid dude that the Release Control technology will leave registry entries and/or files. It is the nature of Securom.

If I´m wrong then, EA can teach Securom how to implement a good DRM :P

Well, if it is included...the three games I was looking forward to the most this year, are now off my shopping list! (Dragon Age 2, Crysis 2 and Mass Effect 3.)

Does anyone know if the Steam versions will be Steam DRM only? (I remember a load of EA games from a few years ago that had Steam AND SecuROM in them...Crysis and Crysis Warhead, for example.)

Steam DRM only, apparently. Unless they've said otherwise since. I haven't been following too closely if they have.

I will admit, I don't know anything about that. I guess I'd better read through both DRM topics, see what I missed.

Aarrgh...I had already read 16 pages on this thread...that looks to be about 40 pages on the thread in your link. I just can't do it!

Thanks for that though, on the first page...straight from the horses mouth...Chris himself:

"Release Control (does not use securom)"

I do wonder however, if he is aware of the dodgy dealing with regard to SecuROM being slipped into Dead Space 2, at the last moment, right under everyone's radar!

Well, silence speaks louder then words..
Who knows maybe somebody from Bioware will answer but I'm not hoping to much.  They will pop-up in this tread probably just to lock it.

Hmmm...very good point...I'm outta here!

Bye-bye pre-order!

Somewhere down the line, I'll probably pick up a copy on Steam, if it gets confirmed that SecuROM isn't on that version.

I have gone back and forth with myself about whether or not I should post this.  Information finally won the day.
Due to Bioware's decision that all sales shall be permanent I have cancelled my pre-order.

Common Bioware, give us some answer, people are canceling pre-orders. Why is it so hard to answer few simple questions?

Just going to add my voice here to ask if there's any more info on the DRM.

Will there be recurring phone-home checks as was originally indicated?

Is the 'release control' (i.e. the release date check) the same as is used on Dead Space 2?

Just repeating everyone else, can we please have more information on the DRM, specifically whether the pc version will have the phone-home checks implemented or not.

Thanks

Bioware,

Please let us know the final decision on the online check-ins. It's an important factor in my decision to keep or cancel my preorder. If the check-ins are implemented, i will buy the game in a few months after a price drop.

They will probably try and wait to announce anything until either the last minute when pre-orders from amazon and such have already shipped, or until the demo comes out and people get to play it, hoping that they are "hooked" enough to just ignore whatever pointless DRM stupidity crap pollutes the game.

As I have said before, I simply have no internet connection where I live. I will not be paying for a game that I can't play. I will not be paying for a game that I have to "hack" to play, unless EA/Bioware wants to pay me by the hour for however long it takes me to find away to play my legally purchased game. Or, if they want to reimburse me for the time it takes to pack up my computer, drive 20 minutes, unpack it, and hook it up to a friend's internet every time I simply want to play the game.

I also want to know the final decision regarding the DRM, especially the periodic internet checks.

I have to say this uncertainty is meh. personally I've cancelled my 2 pre orders, if I want the game and dlc I could always pick it up at the bargain bin later or pirate it. /shrug not a decision I wanted to take but I see no choice given how close the game is to releasing

Talking about Pirating is prohibited.

Really reverting to pirate because a developer doesn't give you the answer you seek or lack there of? People really will just pull things out of their butt for any reason.

Disregard crappy DRM, acquire Steam version. I know I'm seriously thinking of it.

That's not an option for the Signature Edition.  Besides, Steam has tons of other problems.  In fact, Steam is probably overall worse than this horrible DRM scheme.

Never had any problems with Steam actually. It always managed my digital rights without a problem. And no free content in the world is worth the headache of having your pc phoning home to find a crashed EA server.

I think your fear of DRM is overexagerated. I have been playing Dead SPace 2 for the past two weeks and not had an issue.
