the more I read about the DRM the more I feel like canceling my order.

How bad will the DRM be for DA2?

How did you play DAO with dial up it did the same exact thing and more so because it had to validate the dlc everytime you loaded up? Not trying to be mean, I am curious.

Maybe he didn't use the DLC? And it didn't validate it every time you loaded up. It validated once. After that you could play off-line for good if you wanted to.

And people, please don't start advocating piracy, cracks, or other methods of circumventing the copy protection. That's just going to get this thread locked and we really don't want that.

Original Announcement. Of note, the devs said the recurring 'phone-home' checks were not set in stone, but there has been no update since to indicate whether they've been dropped not.

Apologies but cancelling preorders and avoiding playing a game many of us have been waiting for is a rather dark thought in and of itself. I'll say no more.

Not sure if this has been linked in the thread before,

But to both Bioware for putting in DRM in the game (whatever their final form) and the people advocating piracy I think the guys at easy credits had said it best allready:

www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/extra-credits/2653-Piracy

To be fair I do think that the original post about DRM suggest that it won't be that intrusive in Dragon Age 2, but I still detest DRM in any form out of principle. I buy the game legally, I don't need to be saddled with anything out of mistrust that I might have stolen aka pirated the game.

It doesn't matter what the Bioware developers have said in the past as the EULA that EA has published contradicts the original post. The EULA, as it stands at the moment, raises a number of questions.

You can read it here: http://eacom.s3.amaz... Cider_.1.4.pdf

So, Bioware said there was no SecuROM. EA says the game uses Cider - they don't say that Cider uses SecuROM, but it does. Nobody has told us if the phone home has been implemented or, if it has, how often the game will require Internet access. Or what happens if the phone home is unsuccessful.

We don't even know if the demo contains DRM, yet it comes out in a few hours.

I hate all this not knowing :(

I won't have any problem with it if works >_< I just spent almost two days trying to get my brand new, bought and paid for DAO Ultimate to work, and it really wasn't fun. Shows me for trying to support the developers and buying a new copy of a dame I picked up for 2 bucks from an internet listing. And yes, I did have to use 'illegal' methods to play my newly bought game because the official thing just. wouldn't. damn. load. I managed to stay calm through it because I already knew what was in the game... I can't imagine trying to launch DA2 on March 8th (or whenever it comes out here, 2 days later I think) and finding out that the DRM won't let me. Especially given the oh-so-helpful EA support. I will probably pitch a fit like whoa and write angry letters. Not the best use of my time.

I'm hoping that at least DA2 demo will be free of drm and not like Bioshock demo which came with securom even if it was just a demo. Who knows.

Whilst I agree that talking about pirating the game as a result of the DRM is unwise, I cannot see why there should be any objection to people claiming they will use a crack on their legally bought game to avoid the inconvenience of DRM. That is certainly what I will be doing. Living as I do in rural France with a less than solid adsl connection I refuse to be held hostage to fate when it comes to playing my games.

Oh yes, and I've bought every PC game Bioware has made since Baldurs gate, but have only registered DA specifically to post here.

 I'm sorry, but someone will have to explain this to me.. DRM, on a demo? What on earth for? Am I just being stupid, or is there no concievable reason for that?

No there isn't Chaos...just like the 'fears' the demo would be leaked (see gamestop thread) were absolute rubbish too, it's a demo...who cares if its leaked early? What bloody difference does it make, not like it's the whole damn game is it? lol

I remember getting starforce on my rig from a demo. Image IPB

I had read a bit about it and sure enough after removing demo the two hidden drivers were still there and running...forever if I hadn't got rid of them myself. ugh

We are now two weeks away from release. An update on the recurring checks and whether or not they're implemented would be greatly appreciated.

No, there is no reason for it. But it happens when the devs are lazy / under a lot of time pressure and don't bother to remove the DRM from the executable.

I hope to have an update this week - we've had a lot of folks out of the office recently (I was out last week myself), and i want to ensure the info is correct, it is not something we're ignoring.

In the meantime, the drm status is the same as on my original post. There is no securom, but like Origins it is possible some 3rd party digital sites add their own. Check with the site you intend to buy from to be sure - but definitely won't be on Steam or EA Store, or retail disc.

There is no drm on the demo.

The system we use is not the same as the dlc system from Origins.

Errr...forgive me for bringing this up, but doesn't the EULA state the inclusion of Cider and isn't SecuROM part of Cider?

Basically sounds like they're using whatever EACore implements. Thanks for the info.
