On the thread of asking nicely.

Whose decision was it to change the DRM from DAO to DA2?

In my view it is about time that we had some rights management for dragons.

Draconian rights! Right now!

I love how you complainers say how
it is "totally unacceptable" and continue to whine and cry. What are ya
gonna do, not buy the game? If you're not going to buy it, why are you
here? quitcher****in and grow a pair already, my 2 year old girl whines
less than you people.

Honestly, if the online authentication is
required for each and every time the game is powered up, then I can wait for it to be patched out. I don't want to, as I'm getting more and more excited about the game, but I've become less willing to put up with DRM schemes I dislike thanks to a couple iterations of it that completely screwed me over.

In regards to why I'm here, it's because I want to be. And I'll remain here as long as that's the case. :wizard:

If you want to wait for it to be patched out, thats fine by me, I'll be playing DA2 on release day "putting up with" the "apocolyptic" "intrusive" "horrible" drm, while you folks get to look at screenies and gameplay videos on you tube.Image IPB

Except, as I said, the people who will not be able to play, because they cannot connect to the internet.

It's not 100% clear that we need to validate more than once, but since EA "reserves the right" and they want to limit activation to at most 5 unique PCs in a 24hr period... I can't see any way beside authentication at each start-up.

Thats the catch I think- the language is delightfully nebulous and the whole 5 unique PCs in 24 hours thing makes me think it will try to phone home on each start up.

Needing to be online just introduces
another set of things that can go wrong. Your modem could be faulty,
your isp could be down, the ea/bioware server could be down or
overloaded.

Like the whole debacle today with Dead Space 2's DRM mucking things up on Steam.

Really, I just want to have a little transparency on what exactly this DRM is- I don't think thats asking too much of EA/BioWare to know what I'm installing on my computer.

Dave is correct. If we have information to give to you, we will give it to you. I have no such information to share.

There's an old saying for that...

Sucks to be them.

Why are you so concerned about other people's problems, if you have no internet issues, you are good to go, let them worry about thiers.

...I guess...I just feel for others? And...want them to be able enjoy what I enjoy?

Honestly, what a boggling question. Why wouldn't I care about other people?

Why would you? They don't care about you. I had this same discussion with my son when he was all of 16 years old, and knew everything. He decided to hate his best friend because he was found kissing some girl that wasn't his GF. I tried to explain to him that it was none of his business, but he made it his business and lost a good friend over it. Pretty pathetic isn't it?

I agree, we should never care about other people's problems.  Human empathy is a ridiculously trite emotion, the sociopaths have it right!

On a related note, is the internet capable of talking about DRM without using the term 'draconian'?  There hasn't been a more happy pairing of words since peanut butter and jelly.

I'm going to put a stop to the burgeoning discussion on what is the right attitude to have towards other people. Bring it back on topic, and if you have nothing to contribute to the discussion then I'd recommend you remove yourself from it.

How about keeping it on topic like Gaider asked. Is that so hard?

Human empathy is one thing, picking up the Anti DRM banner is a completely different thing.

Why defend DRM that doesn't work? I see no reason to punish honest players.

DRM wouldn't be needed if people didn't torrent the crap out of hot new games. Simple fact.

Quite true. On the same note, is DRM needed, because it doesn't stop people from torrenting the crap out of new games?

If that does end up being the case, and it returns an "access denied" if your modem is off, there will be boundless rage.

I don't torrent the crap out of anything. Why should I be treated like I do?

When does it become okay to say "Okay, since failure is inevitable, we should just stop trying"? Should I stop opposing crime because crime is going to happen? Should I stop living because I am inevitably going to die?

Because a select small group of people ruined the experiance for the greater majority? I don't think we have the technology yet for progams to figure out who's naughty and who's nice ahead of time. Untill then...

My only concern with online activation is this:

What happens in the year 2021 when I want to play this game? Will EA still have their online activation servers up? If not, how will I install this game on my new computer of the future? For those of us who enjoy playing old games, this is a legitimate concern.

Will your machine in 2021 still be capable of running 10 year old games?  I threw out almost all of my old games because my computer can't run them any more--the games can't even RECOGNIZE the hardware I have now.

My only beef with DRM is that it doesn't actually work to stop pirates.  Complaining about hypothetical future inconveniences doesn't really add anything useful.

I retro game all the time.  It takes a lot more work to get them running, but in the end, it's worth it.  The problem with online activation DRM's is that they provide a barrier never before seen in gaming.  With a few tweaks, C&C 95 can be made to run on modern computers.  What if the old games required online activation, however?  Chances are, I'd never get to see a mammoth tank shuffle across the screen again :crying:.

Why doesn't discussing future inconveniences add anything to the discussion?

As long as this DRM doesn't put spyware/viruses on my PC like some DRM...I'm fine by a account activation or 5 PC limits...

I'll never use that limit and I already have a EA account...
