I recently got Neverwinter Nights 2: Platinum off of Steam and I've been playing through the OC (no mods), and I encountered a game breaking bug - I'm wondering if it's common or not.

I kill Garius, travel back to Neverwinter, talk to Zhjaeve, head over to Crossroad Keep for the first time, talk to people there, etc.  Everything seems to be working fine.  I can get the NPCs working on improvements, explore the somewhat fixed up and improved areas, etc.  When I leave Crossroad Keep, however, I can't seem to recruit any NPCs to help with the keep - I just get the dialog that occurs before the PC has the keep.

Here's where it gets frustrating, though.  When I return to the keep, there are dead bodies and the farms are destroyed.  I enter the courtyard and get the same thing - the place is back in ruins, and all the people I killed and didn't loot on my first visit are back to being dead on the ground.  The door to the keep is open, but I can't go through it.  I can get inside through the hidden entrance (the same way used to infiltrate the keep during the ritual - it's still on the world map), and everyone inside is dead.  If I go downstairs, Garius and his guys are all dead, and there are two friendly NPC's telling me that I need to get the doors open so we can get inside.

Basically, it looks like leaving Crossroad Keep makes the game revert back to before the PC kills Garius and gets the place fixed up.  Except all the NPCs are still dead and there's no quest to stop the ritual anymore.  The worst part is that I saved the game inside the keep after talking to Kara for the first time.

Does this make sense at all?

I don't recall seeing this particular issue before, but I'm getting suspicious of the Steam update system as digital downloads had certain requirements by the user as noted in the Installing NWN 2 topic for installing NWN 2 and subsequent expansion packs.

I don't know if it's really possible to use those instructions with Steam. Would you suggest trying a clean reinstall, or do you think playing a new game from the start would avoid the problem a second time? I'm kinda worried about playing this far into the game only to get stuck again.

I don't know if a complete re-install, going back to an earlier save, or starting a new character would work. Unfortunately I am not knowledgeable about Steam as I generally prefer disk installs to digital downloads.

About all I can suggest is to try going to an earlier save and play through from there. and see if it happens again. If you at any point have used debug mode (console) to get past a certain point because of some other issue has kept you from proceeding, it is possible that the use of of debug mode may be having an effect as well.

One suggestion the Devs have given is to save often and in different slots; if you constantly save over the same saved game file, you are likely to end up with a corrupt saved game at some point. The same is true if you have too little free disk space available as well.

There have been several issues come up in this forum lately where the common denominator appears to indicate an issue with the Steam downloads an/or their update system, I hope folks are discussing the same issues in the Steam forums, as it is the only way they will know whether or not they may may have an issue with their system/methods

that's a good question and one I don't think the community has really come to an answer for. All I can give you here is my personal *umph* on the matter.

I'd reinstall. Why do I say this? Because I had an install that worked great, no bugs. Then after a HD crash I reinstalled, and I had no less than three game breaking bugs, seemingly unrelated (otherwise). Now after another HD crash (don't ask), no bugs.

This is a tentative suggestion because what is the reason, WHY? So, my feeling is, if and when you get a good install, have played through a couple of campaigns & mods, are happie .. cherish that Install!

that's my $200 on the matter. Look at it this way, you *know* the version you're playing is glitchy. How long would it take to re-install? vs. playing up to the Keep again? you answered your own question, sir.

curious what Selene or anyone else thinks about this, too

Ah.. sounds like I may have screwed this up myself, then. I've been using the same save slot for the entire game (just a habit of mine). And yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if this were a Steam thing. Unlike some other downloadable installs, Steam has the tendency to blend a game into the steam folder instead of using an install path that makes sense. I prefer disk installs as well, but I saw this at around 11:00pm and didn't feel like waiting until the next day, heh.

Time to give this another shot..

Seeing as it was year since your last post I'm guessing you've probably restarted or given up on this entirely.  I came across this problem last night and incase anyone else runs in to it, this is how I got around it....

Open up the console using the ` key

Then enter the following commands

DebugMode 1
rs ka_hotspot_hide ("2300CKAdventure")
rs ka_hotspot_show ("2100CrossroadKeep")
DebugMode 0

This will hide the waypoint to the old Crossroad Keep that is stuck on your map and then enable to the waypoint to the new Crossroad keep so you can continue you adventure.

I hope it helps somebody :-)
