Say Our Name

I was just wondering a while back if Bioware could somehow incoperate a some sort of vowel or speaking system in which our companions could say our name instead of "Hawke". I know way back when I played "The Movies" it did it, and holy lord, how I was suprised. At the part were the award host was handing out awards to the studio's she would actually SAY my custom typed-in Studio name! It sounded natural too, no "Narrator" sounding effects! I did it again, thinking I was hearing things, but no, once again, she said "Gadget Sun Studios" and again after with "Bright Idea Pictures"!

I like being called by my first name, using the last name like "Hawke" or "Shepard" slighty generalizes my character, even if I have green eyes and 2 feet of flowing hair.

Though I realize the likily hood of this is slim, due to some complications with Voice Acting.. but I'm still hoping it will happen! -crosses fingers-

There's a system like this in Tokimeki. It doesn't work aways well, though, and it kinda breaks the immersion some times. But I'm not sure if 1 month is enough to put it in DA II :<

It seems like a lot of effort for a little reward. I wish I'd played The Movies so I could tell what extent they use it in, but that requires extensive work for every actor who ever utters your name. Not just for consonant and vowel pronunciation, but for any syllable, combination of syllable, and unless they're only used in specific settings, like neutral, non-emotional ones, they'd have to record different sounds for different emotions. That doesn't account for odd sounding names, or names that are in a different language, or so on. It seems, faced with that, they'd try to have them refer to you as little as possible, which defeats the purpose.

Honestly, I didn't even notice they weren't saying my name in DAO. I think it only becomes noticeable when the people close to you refer to you only by your last name. ME1 romance scenes, for instance. But we've been told they generally won't call you by your name anyway. "Champion", "Fereldan", "Brother/Sister" "ser" are all applicable, but rarely "Hawke".

Regardless, there's not enough time to put it in. The game is pretty much finished.

That wouldn't work without sounding strange.

This is pricely why they gave us a generic last name like Hawke. It works fine for Shepard in ME.

How many people do you know with the last name of "Hawke"?

If the characters ever used our first names, it would be because they were set in stone.

I would actually give up the ability to give my characters a custom first name if it meant NPCs could speak their given name in dialogue. Manage save games through middle names which are rarely used in typical conversations anyway.

I be curious how people would take having a bunch of names we could select and those be spoken. I am neutral on the idea.

If it was a decently long list that wasnt consisted of generic fantasy or LOTR rip-offs then I would support it.

Methinks people would have too much fun with this if it was actually in the game.

I don't think it will be an issue for me. Using honorifics or surnames should work fine.

As long as everyone calls me "Master" or "O Great One" in-game, I will not be forced to smite them.

Heh... It'd be just be nice if one of the Characters said "Hey, How's it goin' Areya?" instead of "Hey, how's it goin' Hawke."

But they won't say either, most likely. They'll say, "Hey, how's it goin'?" By not referring to your name at all, they make it less conspicuous they don't appear to know your first name.

I was about to say the same thing! <3 Tokimeki

On Topic:
I don't see how it would be needed. Sure, it would be nice to hear Fenris or Varric's chest hair to say my name, but its hardly necessary. That is why they include the surname Hawke. We get to hear them say Champion or Hawke all day long.

Technically they could, but they likely won't.

They could also just use Microsoft Sam, but I doubt that would sound any good either.

In my head I keep hearing as a sudden splice-in of a Stephen Hawking-ish voice reciting our chosen name at inopportune moments.

Seriously, I think doing this would limit the dramatic delivery of certain emotionally charged lines, or else it would just simply sound fake.

Then again, I have no familiarity with the comparisons that were given.

It wouldn't, and that is why BioWare won't. And they probobly won't untill computer phoenetic word pronunciation programs become a lot better then they currently are.
