It sure is an interesting idea. Maybe they could like, just incorporate some of the most popular names, have only the major characters say them, and if your name is on the list them bam, you get to hear your name! Something like that probably wouldn't be difficult at all, of course you'd be leaving lots of people out, but if it works as well and as easily as it seems like it would, then they could start expanding it in future games, with more and more names. Sounds like fun to me!

Bioware, give us set first names. It's not like we see them anywhere other than the stat screen.

People like the ability to customize their characters the way they see fit - and that includes customizing their character's name. That's kind of what makes RPGs like DA so apealing to some people.

It doesn't matter, the only place we see it is on the stat screen.

It does matter for some people.

Just because you don't think it matters doesn't mean other people don't as well.

Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of giving a set name, if the only place we see it is the stat screen?

I really don't think it matters to anyone that much. It'd be stupid to care about something so much when you never even see it.

They'd have them in the dialogue, obviously.

The problem is that if you set a name, you'd see (hear rather) it all the time.

Tell that to every religious person on the face of this planet.

Most of my names are in old Icelandic... I'm pretty sure that would sound very, very weird.

Actually, I think that the DA2 default names would work just fine as set names. I like them, and they're not weird names that someone would hate or anything like that. "What, the main character is named Garett?! I can't name him Bob?! You just lost a sale, Bioware!"

That wouldn't happen.

How much would you like to bet on that?

Count that against the ones that would buy the game since the main character is named Garret and thus they say his first name.

Please speak only for yourself, Malevolence65, as using a custom name does matter to others, which is why the custom names arer not used in voiced conversations in other games.

There is one technique I have seen used in the past that worked fairly, and that being where the text showed the given name on the screen, but the VO made only slight pause, as you would normally do after a comma, and VO continued with the rest of the dialogue. This was done in NWN 1, and similarly in NWN 2 after that.

Would I like for my character's name to be voiced? Sure, but the technology for doing text to speech is still not very intuitive at a conversational level, and a fixed voice, to some, would be seen as trimming away at what personalizes a character to those players who prefer customization.

So what if the character's name is O45siw^ùaz_-é'à)]hd^pa6942db/; ???

Don't think that is necessary to be honest.

Also, please remember that not everyone is going to name their character Mike or York or Herc or Zelda or Kellestire or Faux. With a system like this, people would definitely be using their creativity for evil. And I'm against that. :)

This is totally true - i have never in my life played Pokemon without having something truely vile as the character name

This is a ridiculous idea. You want every piece of dialogue which currently has hawke to be replaced using one of a huge number of names? A massive amount of unnecessary work for something most people don't care about.

I would actually give up the ability to give my characters a custom first name if it meant NPCs could speak their given name in dialogue. Manage save games through middle names which are rarely used in typical conversations anyway.

I'd totally go for this, too.  In fact, my idea was to give the PC a static short nickname that you *must* put in their name somewhere, but it could be first name, last name, part of first name or last name, whatever you want.

Given the backstory for Origins, they could have it that your mom gave you a totally goofy-sounding gender-inappropriate name which she calls you and introduces everyone to you by (so everyone else calls you that, too), but you have your own name which you prefer.

But giving your character a name is, to me, the least important part of customization in a single-player game, and I'd happily give it up if it means I can get some more natural-sounding dialog.

It's only difficult to do, not impossible. CPU power will keep increasing, tech will continue moving forward, and eventually someone will put together a great, cheap system that will plop your name into a few lines here and there. That'll march on too. Eventually, yes, games will say your name.

Such implementation would be a) impractical and B) impossible without full procedural voice generation.

It is impractical because you'd have to ask ALL voice actors for EACH NPC CHARACTER to record a series of component syllables, then have the computer generate the name file based on what you typed. If you typed something like L33t_Ph1R Hawke then the system will probably explode.

In order to even implement this type of scenario with good results you would need a comprehensive voice generation system with realistic human sound rendition. Currently there are no such system in existence (most just sound slightly better than Stephen Hawking). If someone did invent such a system the voice actors will probably go ape crazy.

Perhaps the romance NPCs would just use something more intimate like "muffin" or "honey" or something; I always felt odd that Ash still calls Shepard "Shepard" (or "sir") after they shared a bed... I mean, even Scully started calling Mulder "Fox" after they *bleep*.

While I think it'd be awesome to have characters in-game call my PC by name, I know that such a thing isn't easy to do.  I'm fine to be just called Hawke, Sister, Ser, or darling.  I have no doubt, though, that as the technology progresses, artificial voices in games may be the way of the future.  Hopefully, I'm not 80 by then.  Posted Image

Easiest way would probably have been to make it happen for custom Hawke. Garrett and Marian. Don't think Bioware did it though. You will be Hawke, Brother/Sister, Son, Honey, Ser, Champion, etc.
