You could just enter your preferred pronunciation using IPA symbols. I'm sure Bethesda is working on just such a system as we speak!

Dirt 2 had a system where you chose between prerecorded names... I liked that, and I think it would be cool Bioware used something similar in future games. I would hardly deem it necessary though.

If they did that one would hope the "insert name" tab would have a "preview" option where Hawke would say his own first name, so you can hear how it sounds. Maybe even an advanced tab to set how it's pronounced separately from how it's spelled, using some kind of user-friendly pronunciation system.

it could be spelled phonetically.

I'm not sure why BioWare basically ditched the custom token system they had in Neverwinter Nights. In the toolset in conversations you could specify response for the different sexs and indeed the First or Last name.

This may have been explained to me before but if it was I've forgotten the reason.

Of course with all the spoken dialogue that does us not good.

See that blue button with the little speaker on it under the English translation? I don't mind it appearing under the character generator where you type your character's name. After a few years maybe.

And they'd need to make it emote and talk in different pitches and accents, as to fit in. A neutral voice saying the name would be more jarring than not hearing it.

Also, please remember that not everyone is going to name their character Mike or York or Herc or Zelda or Kellestire or Faux. With a system like this, people would definitely be using their creativity for evil. And I'm against that. :)

Oh the possibilities.

This thread title...nvm. I must be the only one with a dirty mind.

Anyways, as others have mentioned...this would be VERY tedious to implement and the result wouldn't be worth it. It's not like not being able to hear your first name is immersion breaking.

That'd sound very strange, i think, and the more complex the name, the stranger it would sound. Certainly, the system wouldn't know which syllable to emphasize, so you might end up with phiLIP or aLEXander, or a pronunciation you're not happy with, like 'nath-an' rather than Nathan. There's a reason games don't normally have voice systems like this, and usually rely on pregenerated names instead.

Oooh Faux.. i am Hawke.. Faux Hawk

Even pre-recorded names would not suffice. You would have to account for every situation. I mean, say the name you chose is "Dave". You'd have to have a recording for the normal "Dave", a recording for the intense "DAVE!", the melancholy "Dave...", the surprised "Dave?", etc., etc., etc.

Unless you want every dialogue in game deliver HAL9000 style: "what are you doing, Dave"; "please don't kill me, Dave"; "How dare you betray the circle of Magi, Dave". As oppose to "WHAT are you doing DAVE!"; "please... don't kill me, Dave..."; "how DARE you betray the Circle of MAGI, Dave?".

Now multiply all those recordings by 100 common first names, 20 more situations, and 100 NPCs. It will be a logistic nightmare

Could always create a phonetic system at character creation where you piece together the pronounciation yourself and the game follows suit. But the technology to do it properly without breaking immersion and sounding weird probably doesn't exist. At least not for games...

Easiest way would probably have been to make it happen for custom Hawke. Garrett and Marian.

By far the easiest solution. Just put in a few first name references if players use the default first names. There could be few enough instances that it's not a ridiculous amount of added work for BioWare, but even only a couple would be enough that some players (myself included) would appreciate it.

Right, and how many listings are there in total in your phonebook? I'm just saying that the name "Hawke" isn't quite as generic as some people make it out to be.

Sure. Neither name's really common; we do seem to see an awful lot of Shepards in fiction, though. And there was a fairly famous RW Shepard recently, whereas I don't think there's been a famous Hawke since the 18th century.

*ahem* Early-middle-aged Aussies in da house! The Prime Minister of Australia from 1983-1991 was Mr Robert James Lee Hawke, commonly known as Bob.

As a result, even my femHawke must be called Bob. Or at least Hazel.

To get back on topic, I like the idea of having a few common names voiced which the player can choose, otherwise if you enter your own choice you end up being addressed as "Hawke" throughout the game. It's too late for DA2, but maybe DA3?

But personally, I didn't mind being addressed as "Warden", "my lady/lord" etc. I objected far, far more to being the only stuffed shirt in a room full of highly animated characters, and Bioware have dealt with that issue. B)

I REALLY like the NPCs to call the PC by his/her first name, even if it means I can only choose from a handful of default first names provided by the game. It just feels distant and sometimes a little weird when the NPCs keep dancing around havng to use PC's first name... and anyway, hearing NPCs (especially LIs) calling PC by his/her first name makes me warm and fuzzy inside.

I have nothing against picking a prerecorded last name or nickname, like you do in some sports games, but I want to have full control over my first name.

Yeah most people would have no idea with IPA. Sometimes on wiki it takes me forever to remember the sounds.

Its not a big deal, the name. I never think about it while playing.

It would be great if we were given a list of 'nicknames' to pick from...even if the ONLY party member to use the nickname were our sibling. Anything from just a generic 'bro'/'sis' to something more personal... and even if this more personal nickname only was used a handful of times, it could make things feel that much more in sync with our character. Of course, then it comes down to 'what nicknames to choose, and how on earth to choose them?' and players would have something else to fight over if their ideal nickname was left out...

It's something I've always wished for, but I understand the problems behind implementing it. Someday, though, someday.... :)
