Just like Origins, DA II will feature four difficulty settings: Casual, Normal, Hard, and Nightmare. Based on what we know about the decrees of gameplay difference between these four, and the fact that friendly fire is only active on Nightmare difficulty in DA II, which difficulty setting do you prefer?

Personally I'm going for Nightmare from the beginning - it's the only one that gives me any challenge in Origins / Awakening, and in retrospect I wish I had used it for my first playthrough in Origins as well.

Here's what BioWare's Peter Thomas wrote on the subject about a month ago:

Friendly fire is only on Nightmare. There were discussions on it monthsago (including toggles, having it not be toggle-able in certain modes, and even locked difficulty levels) and that was the decision that was reached.

For reference, here are our current goals for difficulty balance:

Casual - Able to be beaten playing a single character sub-optimally, with the rest of the party using default AI tactics.

Normal - Able to be beaten playing a single character optimally, with the rest of the party using default AI tactics.

Hard - Able to be beaten playing the entire party sub-optimally, either controlling directly or using custom AI tactics.

Nightmare - Able to be beaten playing the entire party optimally, either controlling directly or using custom AI tactics. Friendly fire active.

First playthrough - Normal.

Later ones - Hard.

I think I'll jump into nightmare right from the start, if only due to how it's the only setting where friendly fire is active.

EDIT: Plus, months of Origins on nightmare... yeah, I can't go back now! :P

Same as above, except on of my mages will be on nightmare (maybe more characters)

Unfortunately I'll be stuck on nightmare because I want to play with friendly fire, although that's not the setting I would otherwise prefer.

First playthrough is Easy, since I really only care about story and characters. If it's childishly simple, I might turn it up to Normal. After that, it depends on how much I like combat.

I'm not really interested in greater difficulty for its own sake. Nor do I particularly want the game to challenge me. My primary goal is to advance the story, so I typically just play on normal.

Normal. Tough, in my third character I change it to easy, as I probably want to see the story rather than the fight.

Yep, me too. Friendly fire is an important part of making tactics interesting and challenging. If they hadn't removed it, I'd be starting on normal or hard, but without them I kind of feel like I might as well not bother with tactics at all. Shouldn't be too annoying as I like fights to be challenging and play on nightmare now. Problem is, there won't be anywhere to go from there.

Wait, does that mean that you can't use custom AI tactics on easy and normal mode, or that they can just be beaten with default ones?

It means that it can be beaten with the default ones.

I'll try Nightmare first, because of the friendly fire and see how it goes. Since this isn't a shooter and I can pause to implement proper tactics, I might just make it ;-)

Going on Casual at first because I'm more interested in the story. After I explore everything (choices, characters - which should take a few playthroughs), gonna slowly make my way up to Nightmare.

I play on Normal to develop tactics, on Hard to perfect these and make sure they are ok, or in need of changing, and finally on Nightmare - which I usually play only once. The whole focus on gameplay sometimes ruins the story for me :)

After the whole Nightmare run is done, I go back on Normal :P

I'll probably have to go with Nightmare, if nothing else then for the friendly fire, though might test it out an hour or so on lower difficulty first.

Okay, I thought so

I'll probably roll hard mode first. I want to experience the story but I also want a bit of gameplay challenge too - I usually prefer challenging myself first, and then I end up goofing off on later replays.

I think I'll might just start with Hard. I usually play games on Normal at first, but i can certainly use my whole party pretty effeciently, and without friendly fire it seems like Hard won't be that difficult. I heard somewhere that Normal might be a bit easier than in DAO, and I don't want the whole game to be a walk in the park. Dying every couple of hours keeps ya honest!

I guess Nightmare, since it is the only difficulty that does it right (that is, that has Friendly Fire).

I should note that PC users will most likely see some sort of a mod later on that enables friendly fire on other difficulty settings as well.

Nightmare is still the difficulty that sound the must promising to me, having to play the whole party good sounds like a given for me in a partybased RPG.

While I respect that some people play the game on harder levels for the challenge, and I was this way myself in the days of BG and BG2, (In fact, in BG2 I went through on a "no reloads" game and had a blast; carrying party equipment through the Underdark with only two living party members and everyone else needing to be rezzed) these days I just want to see the story and the combats aren't that interesting for me, so I'll be playing on Casual.

Casual so I can enjoy the game without dying over and over again then after my first play through I'll boost up my difficulty to Hard :)

I don't care about combat, so I play on Casual. All that matters is the story and characters.

I will probably start on normal first and if I think it's too easy I will increase the setting, I mostly play RPGs for the story, exploration and discovery rather than combat(be it strategic or hack and slash). I like that I could "plow" my way through the game if I like and feel like the most powerful being in the world, or have to plan and strategize before I enter a bossfight or even regular encounter.

Question for those who enjoy the story more and just try to get through the fighting: do you just find all rpg combat boring, or would more intelligent enemies or more chances to roleplay in combat or other things increase your interest?

I personally find the combat boring unless I'm really challenged, so I always play on nightmare. But once I learned the inns and outs of the combat mechanics, I found nightmare was often far too easy anyways. I changed my gameplay to make it more interesting, and tended to leave my companions out of the fights.

I think I read somewhere that enemies in DA2 will act more intelligently, use healing/buffing spells more, etc, so the lower level difficulties might be harder than they were in DA:O. At least I hope so. Of course it's all fun and games til the spiders stun-lock you or the werewolves chain overwhelm. Dirty b-stards
