Are you prevented from following the story on harder difficulty levels? No. It has no impact on following the story at all.
I have to admit, I've never been able to beat the game on any level higher than Normal, so that is probably what I will stick to in DA2....because I want to follow the story! Bleh

I'll play on hard so that the story unfolds slower so that I can savour the characters, plot twists etc. But also now that there 'isn't' party damage on any level other than nightmare I can finally jump into the fray without worrying about mage positioning with cones of cold and the like.
Damage wasn't the problem with cone of cold. . .it was the freeze effect.
At least for me. I never let the AI use it.
Speaking of which I hope single target spells in DA:2 don't suck balls, because single target spells aren't supposed to, that's the point in using them.

I find it curious how so many people state that they will play on easy or normal because they want to follow the story.

They probably don't want any satisfaction ruined by the frustration of repeated deaths either. That's understandable. I don't really play BioWare's games for the challenge, I'm more interested in the world and my character. Although I do prefer combat to feel like combat. Figuratively speaking.

Eh, I've always felt if you aren't wiped once the game is too easy, but I dunno.
I've played harder jrpgs than anything I've played on my cpu. I love difficult games, without adversity. . .victories feel empty to me.

I want the first play-through to last longer.

Agreed with the freeze effect....and a multitude of other spells that would knock you off your feet.
And the only single target spell imo that didn't was crushing prison.
Anyway happiness awaits with not having to manually control a mage.

Besides, I took out the Harvester on Nightmare, how hard can it be?

Yeah what you said. I'd rather cruise through a game without trying (at least the first playthrough - e.g I gunned through DF: Jedi Knight on easy because I just HAD to see the next videos) to see the story and character development etc etc before playing it for the gameplay. Don't get me wrong, looking forward to running through a completionist play through on harder difficulty, but I'd rather steamroll it first run through (without searching for every sidequest etc) then pick it to pieces later.

This is excatly how I play most games.

(I usually played DA:O on normal.)
I'm really, really bummed out about FF available only on Nightmare, though. I absolutely love the dimension that FF adds to encounters, but I have no interest in playing on the hardest difficulty. I'm even more annoyed that FF DOES work for enemies. It makes the party feel like superheroes in a way that crosses my immersion line like kicking flasks and shadowstepping didn't.

Once? Yikes. Are you being literal or "tongue in cheek"?
I have to be wiped out 40-50 times before I start to love a game (a long RPG that is - completionist) - as long as I can ultimately learn and prevail.
