I had no trouble on hard last time I played Origins, so I will probably start on nightmare.

I find it curious how so many people state that they will play on easy or normal because they want to follow the story.

Are you prevented from following the story on harder difficulty levels? No. It has no impact on following the story at all.

I have to admit, I've never been able to beat the game on any level higher than Normal, so that is probably what I will stick to in DA2....because I want to follow the story! Bleh

I'll play on hard so that the story unfolds slower so that I can savour the characters, plot twists etc. But also now that there 'isn't' party damage on any level other than nightmare I can finally jump into the fray without worrying about mage positioning with cones of cold and the like.

Damage wasn't the problem with cone of cold. . .it was the freeze effect.

At least  for me.  I never let the AI use it.

Speaking of which I hope single target spells in DA:2 don't suck balls, because single target spells aren't supposed to, that's the point in using them.

They probably don't want any satisfaction ruined by the frustration of repeated deaths either. That's understandable. I don't really play BioWare's games for the challenge, I'm more interested in the world and my character. Although I do prefer combat to feel like combat. Figuratively speaking.

Eh, I've always felt if you aren't wiped once the game is too easy, but I dunno.

I've played harder jrpgs than anything I've played on my cpu.  I love difficult games, without adversity. . .victories feel empty to me.

Hard.

I want the first play-through to last longer.

Nightmare. I feel like I'm kind of cheating by doing the easier options, especially with the absence of friendly fire. In fact, with the combination of all my irrational gaming habits, it took me quite a while to get through Origins. Here's hoping my experience will help me with DA2.

Agreed with the freeze effect....and a multitude of other spells that would knock you off your feet.

And the only single target spell imo that didn't was crushing prison.

Anyway happiness awaits with not having to manually control a mage.

Set on hard, to get used with the modifications and the characters, and then move to nightmare

I've been playing Origins on Hard and Nightmare for ages, so I think I might just jump in at the deep end (Nightmare). That way the story will last longer and I'll keep the suspense of the unknown with the OMFG of those few truly nightmarish encounters for longer. Playing on Nightmare on a second-or-third go is nice for challenge, but you obviously lose that feeling of unease about what's behind every corner that you have on an initial playthrough. Nightmare it is for me, then.

Besides, I took out the Harvester on Nightmare, how hard can it be?

Yeah what you said.  I'd rather cruise through a game without trying (at least the first playthrough - e.g I gunned through DF: Jedi Knight on easy because I just HAD to see the next videos) to see the story and character development etc etc before playing it for the gameplay.  Don't get me wrong, looking forward to running through a completionist play through on harder difficulty, but I'd rather steamroll it first run through (without searching for every sidequest etc)  then pick it to pieces later.

I'll play on easy. I hate having to restart because I die in battle (I have enough trouble having to restart everytime my pc is acting retarded). Besides, I generally mostly care for the story and characters.

I do it on normal but I've finished the game on Hard and didn't have TOO much trouble (some parts were difficult though for sure.)

I won't lie. I usually play Easy on every game my first time and skip right to Hard or Nightmare the second time around.

I'll start with Normal. If it's too easy, I'll jump on hard. I'll play on Nightmare after I have experience on tactics and character builds.

It seems like a pretty even tie between the settings so far. GoA introduced difficulty setting related achievements - if present in DA II, would these achievements make you reconsider your preferred difficulty setting?

I'm going to try playing on Hard because Normal seems easier than it did in DA:O from those descriptions. The loss of FF will make Normal easier, too. I want to be challenged, but I'm definitely not good enough at games to play on Nightmare, lol. A little fail over her. So I'm going to try Hard and then switch to Normal if it's TOO hard.

(I usually played DA:O on normal.)

I'm really, really bummed out about FF available only on Nightmare, though. I absolutely love the dimension that FF adds to encounters, but I have no interest in playing on the hardest difficulty. I'm even more annoyed that FF DOES work for enemies. It makes the party feel like superheroes in a way that crosses my immersion line like kicking flasks and shadowstepping didn't.

Once? Yikes. Are you being literal or "tongue in cheek"?

I have to be wiped out 40-50 times before I start to love a game (a long RPG that is - completionist) - as long as I can ultimately learn and prevail.

I'll start with normal and if it turns out to be to much of a cakewalk I'll switch over to hard.
