Friendly fire is only on Nightmare. There were discussions on it monthsago (including toggles, having it not be toggle-able in certain modes, and even locked difficulty levels) and that was the decision that was reached.

For reference, here are our current goals for difficulty balance:

Casual - Able to be beaten playing a single character sub-optimally, with the rest of the party using default AI tactics.

Normal - Able to be beaten playing a single character optimally, with the rest of the party using default AI tactics.

Hard - Able to be beaten playing the entire party sub-optimally, either controlling directly or using custom AI tactics.

Nightmare - Able to be beaten playing the entire party optimally, either controlling directly or using custom AI tactics. Friendly fire active.

Normal is far enough for me. i'm not that good in those games. (sayin that after I completed the MGS4 ''The Boss Extreme'' Difficulty Level, and Demon's Souls...)

Since I care more about story than battles I usually play easy or normal

Gonna start with hard, since normal on DAO was a little too easy.

Ditto - although if its *too* easy, I might up it to hard.  Nightmare is a pain because it made it too difficult to effectively use AoE spells.  Story before combat.  Always.

Casual.

Question for those who enjoy the story more and just try to get through the fighting: do you just find all rpg combat boring, or would more intelligent enemies or more chances to roleplay in combat or other things increase your interest?

I wouldn't say I find it boring, it's just not that big of a factor in my enjoyment of the game. The way I see it, if you fight a group of enemy soldiers, then you fought a group of enemy soldiers. It's the same effect whether you did it on Casual or Nightmare. Nightmare's not going to give that fight any more significance.

And it's not even a matter of Nightmare being too hard (although it very well might be; I wouldn't know). But compared to Casual, even the relatively easy fights are going to take longer, and just in general it seems like you'd have to engage in a level of micromanaging that I think I would find extremely tedious.

So like others have said, it's just that I play the game for the story, and when fights get too long or tedious or hard, it starts to detract from my enjoyment of the story. I look at it like I'm reading a book...if the author went into that kind of detail about every single action every member of the protagonist's party took during every single battle, I would probably stop reading, or at least skip ahead.

First playthrough is Easy, since I really only care about story and characters. If it's childishly simple, I might turn it up to Normal. After that, it depends on how much I like combat.

This, first caual to enjoy the story/characters, and then on normal or possibly hard depending on how easy the combat is.

Casual on first playthrough, later maybe higher, but I don't really care; story is most important. And anyway, there's nothing worse than running into a high dragon on nightmare and then realising your last save was half an hour ago. Epic mistake.

funny story... did that in DAO. I was level 12 and my last save was after Ostagar...

Somehow managed to barely kill the high dragon.

Saved right afterwords

Casual for story. I only put the difficulty up on Origins when I had mod equipment that made it too easy.

Most likely normal, though I'm not opposed to going up to hard if it's too easy. But I doubt I'll need to. So normal.

If there's an achievement for it, Nightmare.

If not, probably Normal or Hard.

Probably Normal. I'd switch to Hard if I wanted a challenge, but I prefer to play BW games without having to worry about getting my ass kicked in the space between one dialogue segment/cutscene and the other.

I wonder if we'll be able to get a mod that would add friendly fire in normal/hard? That would be great.

Agreed, I can play on nightmare in DA:O, but my prefered seting is hard, but I do want my friendly fire.

At best activating friendly fire could be as simple as making an .ini file tweak, or something edited to similar effect with a hex editor in the campaign files (I'm hoping they'll leave this option open with a wink and nod, if technically possible).

Worst case scenario, we'll need a new version of the toolset, and it's not yet sure if there will be one at all. And if there will be one, it's likely to follow some months after the release of DA II, as per the latest official replies from BioWare.

That's why I always save after every encounter. I finished Origins, Awakening, GoA, and Witch Hunt with a total of 130 save files. ;)

yeah I sure learned my lesson. Almost the hard way. Although there was the autosaves but even still...

Now I'm a save freak, as every RPG-player should be.

Indeed. That's why I dislike games that use checkpoints instead of save slots... fortunately RPGs almost never do that.

This could be a problem, though based on DAO I expect that they're overstating the difficulty of each setting.

I will almost certainly not play optimally, as optimal play usually requires metagame information and out-of-character level-up decisions.  But I will have friendly fire.

I hope someone mods FF into Hard before too long, because I really don't expect Nightmare to offer the level playing field I want.

As with most BioWare games I'll be going for normal or maybe even casual difficulty. I'm not that thrilled of micromanaging all my companions, i tend to let them use the tactics unless it gets really hairy.

I play BioWare games for the characters and the story, I play other games to challenge myself (like Bad Company 2 online).

I see you're still around... let's hope that the Dragon Age II Signature Edition doesn't go down like the Mass Effect 2 Collector's Edition did last year. ;)

Smart use of tactics allows you to focus on the main character even on Nightmare. Well, except for some boss fights, but those are entertaining battles anyway. Obviously the story and characters are key here, but I also like the combat - it gives you something to build your character for.

For me it's the opposite with shooters, as I play a few FPS games (single-player campaigns) to relax.

Depends on how the dificulty system will work, I want to experience the full capacity of the game (full AI, friendly fire, same rules for both sides), but dislike artificial toughening, like +x% damage from enemies etc. So we will see.
