Nightmare from the start, if only for the Friendly Fire .

Casual for me. I haven't graduated to Normal on any Bioware game I've played. I'll get to the harder difficulties eventually because I want those shiny achievements.

Casual on first playthrough, later maybe higher, but I don't really care; story is most important. And anyway, there's nothing worse than running into a high dragon on nightmare and then realising your last save was half an hour ago. Epic mistake.

There's nothing worse than running into a High Dragon, looking all threatening and being portrayed as a major threat in the game world, and then finding that High Dragon to be a harmless pushover because you set the difficulty too low. B)

People talk as if playing on a more challenging setting removes the story. I can see saying 'I don't want to spend so much on potions', 'I don't want to have to manage tactics of the NPCs', 'I don't want to have to reload when I die', but playing on hard or nightmare doesn't take away from the story at all.

I would have chosen normal, like every other Bioware game I've played, but with the removal of difficulty it looks like nightmare is the only viable option.

Depends really. On most games I always pick Normal from the start. Origins however, I played on Easy the first time since I found it a bit hard up to like after Ostagar. Would I have done it the same way now that I've played the game a few times? Probably not. But seeing as how Dragon Age 2 will be quicker and more responsive, I think I'll be going with Normal from the start. I play Bioware games for the story and the character development/interaction, it has never been about gameplay difficulty for me, so I never go for Hard or Nightmare. It just isn't as fun for me, and I don't feel a need to brag about how easy I found the game even on its hardest difficulty.

Neither do I. But if I want to play at an enjoyable level of difficulty, I cannot avoid letting Bioware know that Nightmare in DA:O was one notch too easy, so that they can increase the difficulty level in DA2.

I'll probably start out on normal until I get comforable or enemies start dying with too little effort, then I'll end up on nightmare.

Normal but I stink at normal in Origins.

Not necessarily, but it can. I don't know if I would phrase it as "taking away" from the story, but it can definitely hamper one's enjoyment of the story, as can any needless distraction. YMMV, of course, but to me it just isn't necessary to plan out every single action in excruciating detail, and that makes it a distraction. It's the same with junk looting and selling. I, among others, have a relatively low tolerance for stuff that isn't part of the storyline.

I am surprised by the amount of people who play on casual/normal, but I understand the concept. Personally, I started out at hard and then advanced to nightmare on my second playthrough when I palyed DA:O. For DAII I will start at Nightmare only for the friendly fire. It just doesn't feel right without it. Ruins the fun and immersion for me.

Depends on how the dificulty system will work, I want to experience the full capacity of the game (full AI, friendly fire, same rules for both sides), but dislike artificial toughening, like +x% damage from enemies etc. So we will see.

This is basically my position.  I want the game rules applied equally to all sides.  I know that to get anything close to equal teratment of friendly fire, I need to play Nightmare, but I'm concerned that Nightmare will also offer enemies unnatural bonuses.

I don't really enjoy difficult combat.  I'd rather combat be something that warrants my attention, but not something that really challenges me.  But I need to equal treatment of Friendly Fire.

I'm so adamant about that FF rule that when NWN was released I played on Hardcore (so spell effects worked properly), but as soon as enemy FF was removed in a patch I switched down the Normal because that made the FF equal again, even though it broke all sorts of other things.

I think it's entirely unjustified to classify those as not being part of the storyline.

You're drawing an arbitrary line between things you find interesting and things you don't, and claiming it has something to do with the story.

I usually start with normal for all my games and if it's too easy/hard I adjust the settings. Origins took a while for me to get used to with the timed healings - and not that timed healings were the problem but for a while I only had one heal spell, one mage and in my opinion the heal didn't heal for that much.

it was so much different compared to other games I had played that it took me a while to get a system that worked for me. that and i think I did the mage quest after the dalish quest and half way through red cliffe on my first play through so I was more or less spamming poultices for quite some time with an occassional heal from mori.

after i got the basics down though it did become pretty easy...

Probably on Normal. Subsequent playthroughs will likely be on casual.

I don't play games like this to challenge myself strategically.

In every game I play I play on the hardest difficulty from the start. Makes the game more fun by making it slightly more realistic:

In Mass Effect, you are always outnumbered, Starcraft 2 you are a small band fighting either an empire or an endless horde of zerg, and survival horror games are obvious.

Now that the launch day is almost here, has anything changed for you? I still intend to play the game on Nightmare, although I'm disappointed by the new action RPG style.

Propbally Nightmare, especially since I have most of all the pre-release DLC items to make it a little easier.

Casual - Always start on easiest and expect it to be like watching a movie with some interactive battles in between, I usually can't wait to get to the end so I try to get there as soon as possible my first time through.

Nightmare for friendly fire.

I tried Hard in the demo and combat was mindless hack and slash.
