Is Dog worth using over other Warriors like Oghren, Shale, or Alistair?

I wouldn't recommend that, Dog can't tank, has very low armor penetration, and can't use armor, no reason to have him around.

On the up side, Dog is;
Always loyal.
Finds some nice items for free.
Has a side quest... of sorts.
Is VERY fast and can be sicked on to a mage... "bring me the balls boy!"

I wouldn't use Dog as a replacement for the other Warriors you have available, but I did like having him around and even brought him along when Returning to Ostagar because I felt he deserved the closure as much as Alistair and Wynne.
I don't know if it's ever specifically stated (I read all the Codex entries and it's hard to remember every one) but I got the impression Mabaris are a little smartter than our Real Life dogs...and I'm one of those folks who believe dogs are really smart.

Ussnorway you forgot the best thing... He can lick up all the blood off your clothing

ussnorway has it!
Dog is underappreciated, I think. He's a great mage-killer, as mentioned, and if you max his strength he will be overwhelming even elite warriors by mid game. But you do have to watch his health.

Pump Con and Strength, and he is absolutely ferocious at taking down mages and archers. I have used him right up til gates of Denerim. If you want to make him even more of a killer, get the MOD "dog extra talents".

Don't even pump con, you should have a healer, let her do her job.

Con is an absolute useless wasted stat imo. dex is a far better stat that gives you survivability

Dog is awesome. He cannot be picked up by dragons, he gains stamina by biting enemies and he lasts longer than others in battle.
I have had battles were he is the only one left and won.
He always has stamina left at the end of a fight.
He is good at getting under or through enemies guards, really good at taking down mages and archers.
He is equal to some of the other characters. So you can use him instead of them.
He is a good warrior.
Some like Shale, Sten and Ogren are stronger than him. But it depends on what you are doing.
Shale and Dog are the only ones who cannot be picked up by dragons so if you are fighting a dragon it is good to have them on.
And he always approves of you.
Good to take into situations were someone will disaprove.
He brings you stuff.
And he licks blood off you.
And he is a cool looking dog.
His side quest is called Mabari Dominance.
He marks certain things around the game and gains dominance when he is there.
It is cool you have a dog as a companion on DAO.

I also found Dog (whom I named "Notmangy" after Alistair said he's not mangy) to be surprisingly useful. Example - at Redcliffe, his Dread Howl kept the Zombies stunned along with my and Morrigan's Mind Blast.
Until the other tanks get Massive Armour and higher end Talents, Dog seems to have the advantage as he has less need of items. Also, for some really interesting RP, try taking him to the Broken Circle quest (his Fade nightmare is open to interpretation, but I was moved by how I saw it) and to Denerim.

Playing on the PC now after a couple runs on the PS3 and I find I need him early on for crowd control (Dread Howl) as I can't kill them fast enough yet even when I focus fire.

I only bring dog around when i need to have him find something. due to his lack of weapon and arms i would take allistair or oghren over him any day of the week

And its a very good word. Once you get hit by the enemy doing this ability on you enough you'll realize just how awesome your dog is.
Don't use Dog as a tank replacer. Do use Dog as a guided missile.

Barkspawn is better then Sten for most of the game. Says enough about Sten of course and his underpowered Zweihander discipline.
Personally I just leave Sten in his cage. Oghren, when you finally get him, is much better and funnier anyway I find.
Human Noble Rogues should storywise have Barkspawn as a second warrior next to Allistair. Human Noble warriors might want to give him a skip, but should still consider using him a lot. Other characters can use Shale instead.
Barkspawn had the uncanny ability of being mostly avoided while doing damage, and has a few tricks up his...paw that make him very useful.
Admittingly looses his use when every warrior is gearing up on massive armours and other trinckets though.

Overwhelm is gold against mages plus dread howl can AOE stun elites especially in the early parts of the game if you have any sort of rogue dual wielder take Dog and Morrigan (with mind blast...) and see how those battles go.
Mind Blast will be resisted much more than dread howl...

Remember that Overwhelm is bassed on STR alone so pump that stat if you want the best out of him.

I haven't been useing him, but because of his speed his a good interrupter for sure, then again if the MObs use the same Talents as the characters, they probably have okay protection against interrupts, so you would really have to micro manage the dog and use overwhelm to stop mages from casting the spells if not lucky. The speed of atack is the only reason for haveing him around though, and that just aint enough in my opinion.
If his damage would be increased significantly, now that would be another case, because then with his speed he could take out mages very fast.
As it stands now, hes fun to have around, but thats it really, even though I don't doubht you can go trough the game while just having him with, because I havent had a problem with any setup really, even if some is easier.
The extra dogslot mod is nice, but thats just cheating, guess you can use that after haveing cleared the game though, and at the same time raise the diff level abit.
Then again I don't care much about cheating any longer, after haveing finished the game about 5 times or so it dos'nt really feel like it matters much, I added the ability to pick locks on my warrior, so I can just leave the Rogue behind if needed.

Overwhelm is instant & can’t be interrupted… your only hope is to stop dog before he reaches the target eg. Some Emissary will lay a Paralyses glyph at their feet as an opening move.
p.s.
The obvious counter to this is have Wynne open the fight with an instant spell that disrupts casting i.e. drop an 'Earthquake' on the bugger... dog has four legs for a reason.

How do you heal someone thats already dead, con also adds to Physical resistant.
No, you should surely have a fair amount of con, not by far as high as the main stats like str and dex if a warrior for example, but you should absolutely spend a point in it now and again.
Those tat says con is a waste of points are clueless tbh.

Kinda ok in Witch-hunt. Mages are pretty squishy anyway, having a quarter of your party just doing that is a little overkill I find. Much rather a better balance in the party (including banter/dialogues).

I find him to be a good damage dealer. I just pump str and have him use Overwhelm on any yellow or higher enemies, don't even have to worry about them. It is helpful to have a healer, since he has low health.
