There seems to be a consensus (that I don't agree with) which implies dog is only viable until you get the other warriors into massive armour. Sten/ dwarf are given as examples of better...
Yes they get warrior talents but dog gets Overwhelm and Charge.
Ok they have skills but lets face it with a camp full of companions making you poisons, traps and the like you are hardly in desperate straits when it comes to skills.
In my experience Dog will consistently out DPS all the other warriors, if only because he is so blindingly FAST. He can cross a battle field and kill his first target in the time it takes the dwarf to do his opening berserker yell so that leaves damage survivability, as stated before he is immune to many of the nastier attacks like dragons grab. He also does not generate any where near the threat that the others do... makes him a bad tank fair enough but (unless you send him in alone) it also consistently makes him the last member of your party to receive the hurt.

So i assume people just overlook dog altogether which is a shame because like you say is a very viable party member with a couple of unique talents.

I don't think the consensus is that the dog isn't viable, it's that there are better choices. The dog is certainly viable and useful all the way through the final battle.
For my personal taste I prefer the dog over Ogren or Sten. Statistically he might not be the better choice, but I've never had good experiences with 2H warriors. But then I refuse to actively manage them, as I'm too tied up managing my rogue PC and whatever mage I have in the party. Perhaps I need to learn how to set up their tactics for effective auto-attack. In fact, I'm sure I do.
Back to the dog, I wish the dog was stronger because I'm a dog lover. Everytime he interacts I just want to pet him.

Dog's around level 18 or 19 for me and I was surprised to find out he could make use of the Song of Courage ability just as well as the human warriors. 65 points of damage per hit and a 27% critical chance rate with two SOC rogues in the party. All strength build, of course.

Dog's definitely useful.
Just fight wolves or werewolves yourself and see how annoying they are.

Definitely useful! He can learn an ability (forgot the name of it) that allows him to take a single enemy to the ground and instant kill!! And it works even faster if the enemy is a mage. He's actually very very powerful during combats.

Definitely useful. I've never taken him with me past Lothering, but I decided to give it a shot with my current DW rogue and now Alistair-Wynne-Dog is my permanent party for this playthrough. He's really fast and his area stun is great for backstabs, especially once you get Goup de Grace and Momentum.

On Easy? Yes.
On any higher difficulty? No, unfortunately.

dog was a permanent fixture in my dream team, first time i finished the game, back in 09, on hard difficulty;
rogue warden sneaks into room, positions himself at the back near mage or leader, morrigan casts AoE's on the room, draws aggro, DOG howls as they funnel up, making sure the ones in the back can catch up for her cone of cold, then oghren wades in shattering and maiming, with the DOG using charge and overwhelm to protect her, meanwhile warden is slicing and stunning the mage/leader until oghren arrives with the final blow (and man, when that landed on cue, "YEAH!"s were being yelled).
dog is a cc champ.

Viable on all difficulties actually, but he's a situational pick. Dog can be built tanky and he's immune to Grab and Overwhelm. I would bring him against warewolves or a high dragon for example, but i wouldn't bring him say, against Caridin and his golems since his own overwhelm is useless here and there are better picks for this fight.

in terms of combat prowess, his dread howl is really impressive at early levels.
over time, however, he falls off.
As a tank, he can't wear heavy armor to defend himself.
As a skirmisher, he can't backstab or attack from distance.

Just thought I would share my run with Dog. In my Healer/Support mage run, I had Dog as my tank. Early on, he seemed to take damage better than Alistair and Sten, and with a bit of DEX, he got a decent defense. As I went further through, I picked up Wynne for the group and made her sort of a mainly DPS/Debuff with a couple heals, and this point he had a good amount of STR and DEX both and was almost impossible to hit. I had him set to taunt and he always had threaten on, and with his gear being so simple and inexpensive, I had him geared early on in the Pure ****** Braid and Kaddis of the Lady of the Sky. He shined quite a bit in the High Dragon and Flemeth battles since he couldn't be grabbed. For those battles I switched out for the kaddis that has 30% resist fire, and it really helped. I even brought him all the way to end game, and he was perfectly wonderful against the archdemon. He ended with something like 45 STR and 45 DEX, with a few points in willpower. His actives were threaten and precise striking. He almost never missed, and he put Leliana's damage to shame. He was set to overwhelm mages and charge enemies that attacked me. Growl came in handy, and shred did fantastic damage. In the end, sure I could have used Alistair or Sten or whoever, but as a purely unique experience and a successful one, Dog was a wonderful tank. I've gotten so fond of him, I find it hard NOT to use him now in all my playthroughs.

For me no I only have him because he's cute to have around but beyond that generally I don't use him. I take him sometimes when I'm just doing the odd side mission but I don't think he's srtong enough t ohandle the big main missions like Orzammar or whatever.

One word: Overwhelm.
The dog has the unfortunate state of being an animal class in Origins. This means he was built like an evil minion you are meant to slay, but acts as your party member.
Bring the dog and a Shapeshifter with you and you'll be Overwhelming everything which is pretty fun, might as well take a Ranger, Blood Mage or mage that knows Animated Dead as well.
Because unfortunately in the end all you're doing is adding squishy DPS that doesn't stack up to an actual character.

Yeah it's wonderful that exploiting DEX makes him better, but it would do so on any other character. Leliana's damage is irrelevant considering she is a Bard.

I found dog useless since he can't equip shield or armor, but with a mod which allows you to use him as a fifth member of your squad he is good.
