Previously referenced in the Guide to Trouble Shooting article, it seemed that a separate standalone reference could also have some value when our members run into mysterious game-crashing behaviors that defeat the usual work-arounds.
The Trouble Shooting Guide's preview article is here: http://social.biowar.../index/5783187
Just since Dragon Age was brand new, the popularity of various "Social" internet sites has exploded, and many game players now think nothing of having Browser Windows/ Tabs for Facebook, MySpace, Twitter & Xfire all active in the background at the same time, all of the time. Xfire has frequently caused problems in many games. None of the several games that Bioware has used the UT3 engine on, or their own engine on, were intended to run in competition with sites such as those. Those are only the tip of a truly huge iceberg of luxuries that gadget-happy people are loading in their PCs every time they start up.
I constantly see that game players who are reporting having game problems have over 2 GBs of programs and services loaded, running in the background, which is twice as much as should be there (run your DxDiag utility and look at the top tab in it for "Used" Pagefile).
Proper use of the Clean Boot procedures can identify the programs and services that are conflicting with the game (several popular AVs and Firewalls regularly cause problems). Black Viper's web site can assist regarding Windows' own excess services.
Microsoft has several pages' worth of advice on their web sites about how to use the "Clean Boot" startup to deal with gaming trouble (different pages for each of their OSes):

Your Pagefile, for any who are unfamiliar with the term, is a file on your hard drive that Windows uses to help it manage its RAM use. It is an important part of Windows, no matter how much physical RAM you have available.

Something you should be watching out for: bloated Pagefile usage

On the Microsoft "Clean Boot" page, the user will get an popup offering to d/l a utility that will check for performance problems and offer to fix it automatically, or let the user make the decisions. A nice little feature for the less experienced user.

Since I'm discussing the Pagefile in some threads, both on Social, and on a Bethesda Softworks site, I was minded to bring this in front of the members once again.

I've asked a new member to report his Pagefile Use numbers, so here is where to find out how to get that number.
