so im new to ME, ive seen trailers and reviews and love the look of it so im def gona get involved.

ive heard you can continue content over from 1 to 2, and im assuming when it comes out from 2 to 3....

so my question is - how does this work? i want to buy it from steam (wait for a sale), would they hold my data in some way? or alternatively if i cant wait for a steam sale and buy it in a shop then add the game to steam will steam then hold my game data in the same way as if i bought it from them? or does steam have nothing to do with how the data is transfered from 1 to 2....is it a manual thing you have to do yourself regardless?

any info is appriciated

cheers

It's a manual thing you have to do yourself. Regardless of where you got the game from, ME1 will generate an export file whenever you complete the game, and that export file can then be imported in ME2 (regardless of where you got it from). ME2's configuration utility does have a tool to move the exports over to ME2, but even it is very bare-bones (you have to point it to ME1's save folder. Then it will automatically move any export saves).

There is no provision to upload exports to any kind of cloud storage, Steam or otherwise. You have to make sure to preserve these files yourself.

If you really want to use digital download to buy the game instead of buying it hard copy from a local store, I would recommend avoiding Steam and getting it from EA's digital distribution channel instead.

Far too many issues have cropped up of late relating to the Steam version that dont seem to happen as frequently with EA or disk copies of the game.

...or maybe Steam has such a big market share that a large number of people buying ME get it through Steam.

Personally, I'd warn you to check the fine print when buying from the EA Store. Last I looked at it, you had to pay again to re-download the game after a certain period of time. Whereas other stores like Steam, Impulse, etc. will let you re-download as many times and as long after purchase as you want.
