Welcome to all who are reading, and thanks for taking the time to read.
I bought DA:U on steam about a week and a half ago, and since i installed it, there has been no end to the random crashes and slow downs that hit me.
I managed to complete the Mage origin without crashing.. until i got to Ostagar: CTD for no apparent reason. (i did not save, as i tend to forget it.. a lot.)
Thinking it was my system acting up, i slammed the brake and turned down all graphics to a minimum, and try again.
Half way through the mage origin it crashes. (this time i saved, heh)
I restart and load, take 2 steps and crash!
Now i know it's not my graphics setting, since everything was way down and ugly.
So i turned my attention to the next horrible monster: Windows. I changed DEP settings to allow Dragon Age and Steam to run without interference. (my other steam games never crashed, so idk)
I load up the game and save, and lo and behold, i got to Ostagar! After the proper introductions and theft of keys, i prepare myself to set out into the Korcari Wilds. As the guard bids me farewell and a safe trip, the game thinks it's had enough and decides to quit.
Now i've noticed my graphics card cooler making a lot of noise, so i dedicated this crash to an overheating issue, and thus i set out to convice my fiance to go out and get me a can of compressed air so i can clean my computer. (i love her, cause she did it.. hehe)
After much ado in the filth that is "computer-dust" i got everything dust free, from the power-supply to the smallest condensator! Confident that this would fix the issue, i hooked my PC on and started up the game. This time i didn't even get to load my save! (but at least my card is nice and quiet again)
I looked around on the interwebz to see if other people were experiencing the same issues, and after a whopping 2.159 seconds i had found 400000 results linked to the keywords "Dragon Age" and "crashes", making me feel all warm inside since i'm not alone in this battle.
Since then i have combed through my Windows services, edited startup programs, cut all unnecessary background programs and still crash.
Fun part of it all is that these crashes do not seem to be linked to anything at all. I often crash during dialog, i often crash during travel, i often crash during loading (yes, 5 minute load times make my peecee very unhappy) and i often crash during battle (with or without magic, it's not picky)
I tried contacting support through their "live-chat", which turned out to be a chat-bot with a horrible configuration.
Now i just try to cope with the crashes, but after about 200 of them, it's getting harder and harder to ignore it and just "restart".
What's left to try? i've tried everything there is to try.. anyone have an idea?

Processor: AMD Phenom X4 9550 quad @ 2.20Ghz
Ram: 4GB DDR-II

Windows version: Vista Home Premium SP1
Dragon Age Ultimate on Steam - Crashes w/o reason.

Tell me about the size of your "Used" Pagefile, if you will.

You probably will do much better, also, with SP 2 instead of just SP 1.

As DxDiag shows, there is 1225MB used of 5649MB available.
*note*
I didn't realize there was a new SP for Vista. (which is strange, as i am usually the person to update asa updates release)

Yours is much better that I've seen for most Vista users having difficult to track problems. If The SP 2 doesn't help, I've written a Trouble Shooting Guide for folks to follow that may offer some relief.

Ok, installation of SP2 is complete.
I've tested the game now, and i've been able to complete the Keep w/o it crashing. But then again, on some rare occasions, the game didn't show any issues for a few hours on end. I'll test extensively later today.

You did a lot of troubleshooting before you posted, so you know this well-- it is almost never just one thing. I think your system will be MUCH more stable with Vista SP2, but you may also need to take a critical look at how long you're playing and what your graphics are set at. Dragon Age is clunky-- it's allergic to little things that other programs simply ignore.
So if you're doing a marathon session, for example, give your computer a break when you do. Don't just pause-- save the game, log out, and reboot. Clear out the memory, give it a chance to breath.
Good luck!

Well, it holds out longer, that's a plus, but it still crashes. I've noticed a lot of the crashes were after i used a combo of 4 skills.
The following combo resulted in crashes for me, but not always. Something like a 1 in 4 chance every battle.
Combo is: Shield Bash - Shield Pummel - Assault - Overpower (in that order)
I will keep testing to see if the combo is indeed what is causing the recent crashes.

Another way to look at it is if that particular combo is putting stress on the system beyond it's abilitty to cope... you mentioned that you don't use Catalyst-- are you sure all its "enhancements" are turned off? I'm not very familiar with it, myself... been using Nvidia boards for a while now.

Everything is turned off. Every time i start my computer i check the tasks to see if any CCC component is started. (it's also removed from startup programs. Unfortunately, i cannot remove it from my system completely, because the card drivers seem to act up if i do)
Also, it seems this combo is not the issue. I crashed 2 times in a reasonably short period, neither of which i used any skills. (one was in the Inn with the "Blight orphuns" and another was during an ambush on the road)
