Health Poultices won't hotkey

Just recently I started getting this problem where whenever I dragged over any kind of health poultice to my hotkey bar from the inventory, it won't be placed on the bar and will remain in the inventory. This pretty much makes the game unplayable because I can only heal with injury kits which are hard to come by. So does anyone know a solution to this problem?

Sorry you're having problems. Could it be that the quick-launch bar is locked? There's a little padlock icon in the very lower left-hand corner of the screen. It's easy to miss. :)

No, it wasn't locked, I checked.

Okay... never hurts to go to the easy ones first.  Could you please post some system specs, what version of Windows you're using, and what version of Dragon Age you have?

EDIT:  also, do you have any 3rd party mods installed?

Dragon Age: Orgins Ultimate Edition

Thats really all I know about it. I don't bother to look at and remember that SC23444556 stuff or whatever lol. In short, i'm not really a tech junky.

I have to say that my Hotbar is very picky as to where i place the Poultices.. i have to drag it all the way to the bottom before it will accept it as place in the hotbar. Maybe your game is from the same family as mine, and has a genetic disorder that prevents Poultices from being place like it should? :P

I have to add that my game ONLY does this with Poultices. All other items act as normal.

edit:

Start your config utility. Under the game tab is should give you your version number (i suspect 1.04 since it's ultimate)

Interesting.  What resolution are you playing at?

I run the game at 1440x900 (which is a Widescreen 16:10 setting)

No, I can't place the poultices anywhere. And i'm not sure where this "config utility" thing is. This just started yesterday after I created a new human noble character, and its the same issue for my other characters as well.

The configuration utility is not ingame, you have to select "configure" on the DA launcher, in stead of Play. This will open the configuration utility, which will check your system for most viable settings if launched for the first time, i believe.

Okay... I asked about resolution because I was wondering if it's just finicky, like Trixor says, and requires some "pixel hunting" to place it. Sharn, as soon as you can get your stats, I'll put on my thinking cap!

EDIT:  Also, doing a Google search of this site, I am not finding a lot of keyword hits on this issue.  So all the basic info on your system is essential.  :)

Problem is, I don't know how to find my system info. I looked everywhere. I tried placing my poultices in every way on the bar and it still won't work, I also restarted my computer and tried different resolutions.

Okay, no worries.  Let's start with the basics-- go into the game, click on "Options", and then under the "Video" tab, you'll see what your computer's resolution is set to... it will be something like 1680 X 1050 or something.  I am curious about those numbers.  :)

Hmmm... okay.  You're playing on the VERY lowest graphics setting possible.  May I ask, how old is your computer, and is it a laptop or a desktop machine?

We should probably go ahead and get the rest of your PC stats.  Here's what you need to do:

1) Click on the desktop icon to start the game.  This should bring up the "launcher", which gives you options like Configure, Support, Uninstall, Play... and some others.

2) Click "Configure".  This will load another screen.  You'll get a welcome message, and in the bottom of the window, it will say "scanning system".  Let it scan... it may take a few minutes.

3) Once it's done scanning, go to the second set of options on the left, under the heading of "System".  Click on "Summary".

4) This will display the info we need.  We need to know Processor, Clock Speed, Physical Memory, Display adapter, VRAM, Driver Version, Operating System and DirectX Version.

It's past midnight where I am at, so it's off to bed for me.  But if you can post that information, I or someone else can chime in with ideas.

Best,

RI

Thanks for the update. I am going to try a little experiment. I'll report back later.

Okay... I lowered all the settings on my system to see if I could replicate the effect.  Didn't work, but it's not a true test anyway.

Laptops are, I am sorry to say, a bit "iffy" when it comes to games like DA:O.  We trade a lot of performance for portability.  You can find similar comments from others in a lot of threads on this site.  I am not the expert on ATI graphics cards, so I am not sure if yours is even technically supported by the game.

Now, it seems like you're able to play with the lowest settings.  So my best thinking is along these lines... for whatever reason, the game is reacting poorly to your system constraints, and it's not able to tell if the health poultice is hitting the correct location on the screen (X and Y coordinates) to place it on the quick bar.

There may not be much to do.  You can still pause the game, open the inventory, and use items that way, of course.  IF you want to experiment, here are some ideas.  I am just kinda throwing these out to see what sticks:

1) You can try the next highest resoultion setting (probably 1024 X 768) and see if you can put the poultice on the quick bar then.  Using a higher resolution on your system may cause a lot of problems, too, but if you can get the poultice to work, you can then save and drop back down to 800 X 600.

2) If your desktop is at a higher resolution than 800 X 600, consider lowering it to match Dragon Age.

3) Make sure you have the game patched to the latest version, 1.04.  You can tell by going into that same configuration menu and selecting "Game" instead of "Settings".

4) Go to the website for your laptop manufacturer and see if there are any updates to drivers.

5) See if you have the option of dedicating more RAM to the onboard video card.

6) Run Windows Update and make sure your version of Vista is current.

Again, just some ideas.  Let us know if anything works!

EDIT:  Forget #3... you have the Ultimate Edition, which is already patched to 1.04

Oh I just discovered there was an update available for windows, thanks i'll try that. As for the other possible solutions, I've tried all resolutions and it wouldn't work, and I actually can't drink poultices manually in the inventory, the only options are destroy and examine.

I haven't really had much trouble with high-quality games on this laptop, most are played with hardly any lag if I lower graphic settings a bit, but I have them at the lowest in Dragon Age.

Whoa... you can't use it off the inventory either?   The "use item" icon looks like this when you rightclick:

If you can't, then somethings wrong, but darned if I know what it is.

I guess something is wrong because there isn;t any use item icon. Oh well, I guess its up to injury kits and elfroots to save my life.

Though I can think of one more thing, I have recently downloaded alot of mods for DA:O, maybe one of them was a bit broken? I could try deleting some, but if that doesn't work I can think of nothing else to do.

Oh... now I am kicking myself for not asking that... usually that's my first question.  Yes, that has to be it... we've pretty much eliminated everything else.

Here's the trouble with mods... some are great... I've used a few myself.  BUT... I've found that a lot of them were created before Patch 1.04 came out in July or August of 2010.  Plus... the more mods you install, the greater the chance they'll have a bad interaction... like medicines.

I think you've come up with the answer.  :)

It worked! Thank you so much for all the help :) It seems I got a bit carried away with my nerdgasm when I discovered a site that had hundreds of mods for DA:O so I downloaded at least 20 of them, I deleted about half of them and now my hotkey bar works again. I'm still able to keep some of my too-awesome-to-delete mods without problems though.
