What they need to do is find a middle ground between the complexity and tediousness of the old upgrades system, and the over simplification and lack of customizability of the new system.
I hated it in ME1 because of all the items filling your inventory. I'd look forward to a NewGame+ because I had all the top gear already and just omnigel'd everything in sight. Peace of mind.
I'd rather not be able to customize much of anything than having to carry a bunch of useless stuff only to have to sell it later.
Yeah I was bothered by it too. That's why I suggest a middle ground, with more customizability than the new system, and less junk than the old one. For example eliminating the levels upon levels upon levels of every particular item, but keeping the item itself. We could have VI Targeting instead of VI Targeting I, II, III, IV - X. Kinetic Stabilizer, instead of Kinetic Stabilizer I - X. Extended Rail instead of Extended Rail I - X. That would eliminate all of the cluter but still leave us the ability to customize.
The variety of weapons did to some extent make up for the lack of customizability in ME2. But ME3 will be even better if we have the same variety, plus a little more variety, plus a little customizability.

Plot and gameplay are disconnected in every game ....... it is not somehting the devs really care about and most gamers have gotten used to it.
Some are more disconnected than others and the ME series is fairly disconnected.
However most attempts at connection end up being just plain annoying because they never work.
Looting is a prime example ...... how many times have RPG players been thrown in jail when they actually weren't stealing anything.... they just had the misfortune to click the wrong spot.
Then there is the magic guards with ESP that can hear a coin being lifted 1000 meters away and magically know crimes you committed 1000 kilometers away.
Then there is NPC banter, which was done with varying success and varied from mildly amusing and atmospheric to "If I hear that line one more time I will claw my ears out"
My motto is better left out than a half assed job.
Bioware should have eliminated 90% of the looting in ME2 as most of it was illogical and out of place. Who carries a empty heavy weapon to battle hoping to find some ammo on the way?
In ME1 you were a Specter in a very rich galaxy ...... it was stupid that you would have to loot anything except Geth and other new tech.
In ME2 you worked for Cerebus and were the "Last Hope for Mankind" ...... That sounds like a blank cheque to me ..... but you were too poor to even carry a loaded heavy weapon into battle.

I'm only responding to this because just today I was replying the Archangel mission and laughed my ass off that you pretty much went through his stuff looking for credits?? Shepard is a jerk!

Just a game mechanic. It's always humorous when the people are there when you pop the locks on their chest or hack a safe whatever. Just have random credits for killing mercenaries maybe even like wnated poster rewards from the Citadel or local like police on Illium.

Like in Tali's and Grunt's loyalty missions, you were rewarded research augments. It would get repetitive, but it would soothe the soul of the poor Paragon shepard who is forced to loot.

"Shepard = The biggest looter?"
So is the Warden...and practically every other protagonist that I play.

I like this idea of wanted posters! I think they should be on every planet and major space station! On planets/stations run by good guys, you could get do-gooder points for bringing in the wanted individuals plus a big cash bonus. This could add a new element to the game, we've killed lots and lots of bad guys before but we've never had to bring one in alive. And I imagine any citadel and/or generally good authorities would want their criminals captured rather than sending out hit squads after them. Also if you prefer you could get major renegade points by helping wanted criminals escape, and depending on the bad guy, maybe even a bigger cash bonus or none.
Then in territories run by criminal organisations and/or seedy characters, like Omega from ME2, the most wanted individuals would most likely be good guys. So you could get do-gooder points for helping them escape, and variable cash rewards depending on their wealth. Or maybe the citadel/good guy authorities would pay rewards for rescuing these people. Or you could earn renegade points and more stable bonuses from the establised bad guy authorities of the territory for capturing the wanted individuals. I imagine in places like Omega any lesser wanted individuals would be wanted in the classic wild west fashion (Dead or Alive!) while only the most important individuals would be wanted alive, for inteligence. But they would probably end up suffering a worse fate than death at Shepards hands. Double renegade points maybe?

^ That would be hilarious! My para wanted on Omega and all seedy places and Rens wanted on Citadel! What if some of the hits / bounties are on your own squad members both present and past?

Hey shepard saved the universe so all those people and their belonging are open game, I mean them losing a few credits and/or medi gel is a pretty good trade. And besides If Shep didn't do it someone else less deserving would.

Drivel. Omega's streets were a warzone. Shepard-Commander reserves the right to any salvage he recovers. The Alliance kicked him out anyway, so he's now a merc, and thus not required to adhere to Alliance anti-looting procedures.
Cheers and good furtune to us all!

I like how Bioware kind of lampoon this with the Kasumi mission:
Shepard: *searches couch* Aha!
Kasumi: You found a DNA sample?
Shepard: No--a credit chit!
Kasumi: <_<
Don't get me wrong i like the mission but that is the most noteworthy part of it.

hmmm.... what does this discussion remind me of?... oh yes.

Cabal is very funny... anyways.
I agree, very contradictory. I remember right after I chastised those guys I ran around the apartment looking for something to hack. Even paragon Shepard can't resist being a completionist... even if it means thievery. I've never thought about halting my looting. To me, it is a reward for being thorough... but looking at it in this discussion, it's no more than stealing. Darn it... my Shepard is bad...
