What level is Gorion supposed to be in-game? It bothers me how he casts some lame low-level spells and then goes to attack a fighter with his dagger (*cough* Dimension Door *cough*), dying in the most pathetic way possible.
IIRC the game mentions he used to meet with Khelben Blackstaff, and in BG2 Jaheira mentions he used to be in a party that wounded Firkraag.
Wouldn't it have been more concievable for Sarevok to have turned up with an entire contingent of Iron Throne mooks instead to slowly deplete Gorion of his spell arsenal, and then just barely finish him off?

I am not 100% sure, but believe Gorion is about level 9 (you see 4 missiles when he uses magic missile spell). But if is he is level 9, why the heck isn't he using mirror image spell, would have come in handy against Sarevok.

Obviously?! Gorion heard that Sarevok was coming to kill him and tried to run away with his ward in a hurry. He therefore didn't have time to learn much in the way of combat spells in place of his normal research oriented ones.corey_russell wrote...

There's a little problem with your analysis Grondo. The opening prologue with the narrator (what you see just before starting your game in Candlekeep) tells you that Goron has been agitated for DAYS. Gorion had plenty of time to memorize whatever spells he thought he might need.

Simply put, it's a cheesy cut scene in which Gorion is scripted to die. Use your imagination and have him cast whatever you wish. In the original version of the game Sarevok had something nigh to total magic resistance.

Clearly so agitated that he was not able to summon up the concentration to memorise spells.corey_russell wrote...

Sparky's interpretation is what I took from it too. The scene was made as it was for dramatic tension. As well, BG lacked the high level spell resources of its sequel to make Gorion and Sarevok's battle suitably epic. I checked the manual since several NPCs have their levels mentioned within. Gorion had no listed stats.

Russel's observation is correct. He is level 9 according to the game files.
But it is certainly possible to script a more impressive final moment for Gorion.
