i've personally been struggling to find names for the characters that i have created, but i am sure there are those of you that can reel cool names off your tongue in seconds. i was hoping people could maybe advise others on a name that would suit the character that they have created. thanks to dennis carpenter for helping me name my human character....meet Rhygar!

If all else fails, look at the lore. I named my most recent family member Adalha.
Where I got it from? Vir Adahlen, which means "Way of the Forest". Adahlen became Adahla as a name. Suitably foresty for a dalish elf, I think.
So BAM, instant name.
Edit: For example, "Vir" obviously means (maybe not literally) "Way" - as in Vir Adahlen (Way of the Forest), Vir Bor'Assan (Way of the Bow) and Vir Assan (Way of the Arrow).
"'len" appears to relate to "child" - as in Shemlen (quick children), Da'len (child) or Durgen’len (Children of the Stone).
So one could imagine that something along the lines of "Vir'len" would mean "Child of the Way" or with reinterpretation of "Way" , "Roadchild". I.e. traveller. A suitable name for almost any elf, no? Wheter it be a city elf street urchin or a dalish ranger.

As I said, I'm not sure of anything. This is all assumptions and conjecture and make-believe.fuelledbypassion wrote...

A few I found before for I thread over at the Chronicles Network
Some of these are not just lists with meanings, but also structure for families like the Irish Naming Patterns for Children for example...
The 1st son was usually named after the father's father
The 2nd son was usually named after the mother's father
The 3rd son was usually named after the father
The 4th son was usually named after the father's eldest brother
if anyone is interested,
http://zompist.com/kit.html is a language contruction kit. I haven't used it but it's interesting. and you could always use an anagram creator
hope it helps.

In general, I would suggest generators and name sites with meanings like babynamesworld.com to look up names or get ideas from them. I remember one guy on the old forums mentioning that he just hit random keys on his keyboard, found combos he liked, and then added more vowels/took out extra letters until he came to something he liked. That might work well too.

Well for my first playthrough I usually just use my own first name. Not that its ever mattered, its not like any NPCs will ever say or use your first name. And since the last names are premade I expect it will be similar to Mass Effect with people using your last name all the time or something.

You can also search for wiki sites for ancient names from different cultures such as those of Gaelic, Roman/Latin, Greek, Persian, Iberian and/or even Mongolian origins. There are lots of good names out there and you can even create unique off-shoots of these names for yourself.

Sometimes I look at maps of countries I have not been too, pick an area, and mix and match the names they have there already. 100's of names can come from that.

I sometimes create fun character names by typing in a random string of letters.. like yuarldij.... then I'll take that and type it like it would be pronounced.. Uarldij .. Then subtract, add or rearange the letters so that it looks fun.. Jiidalru, Uralldij, Raliju. Or you can take two random words like Chair and Table and combine them to be something like Chable or Taiir. Or you can take a common name like Alex.. and just mess with the spelling.. Alix, Alyx,. You can also take something within the personality of your character and then mess with that.. Like for my little dwarf thief.. I wanted him to be a slimey type of character, untrustworthy, complete vermin.. so I named him Vermar.

I've been using the same names for my RPG characters since I was a child (a long, long time ago)

Mine happen thru evolution.
For example I was creating a Orc Choppa and well when i got designing him i could only picture a watermelon is what his head looked like, so he got Melonhead. Yes I'm quite original.
Another character I made I could not think of a name, so he got the name of "Shrug"

Normally I pick a phrase and translate it to some appropriate language (Babelfish is a wonderful thing) but the Silmarillion should never be underestimated as a naming resource. Sometimes I also just flip a word or brand name around backwards, too. Rellim might work for someone who likes beer or Odnetnin for a former plumber, while Noino could be someone with bad breath. That kind of thing.

Personally, I sit at my computer mumbling random syllables with the sort of sound I want until I notice myself spouting off a nice combination.
Make sure no one else is within earshot, though, or you'll get some weird looks.

I like to take my names from book characters with unique names, for example Eowyn (you should all know where that name is from) and Faydor (I changed the spelling on that name but i'll give any one a penny if they can figure out where it's from).
After that I use obscure names that i really like i.e Fallon, Elodie, and Isolde.

Since the Fereldans are described as being influenced by the Celts, I used a Celtic name for my Human Noble. I can't wait for when a Dragon Age game takes place in the Tevinter Imperium so I can name my human Herakleios.

I look at the names the generator comes up with in-game (or in the CC) and look at the long list of names I've been collecting (and still continue to) just for games and RP. There are usually a few I like that seem to fit the general atmosphere of the in-game (or CC) names, or a few that can be modified to fit it. If there is nothing, I usually (strongly) modify the names the generator comes up with or make up a new one. Those last two usually produce names I'm not as satisfied with, though, so sometimes I use names I have already used for characters in the past (I generally try to come up with a new name for each character).
If there is no random generator for names in the game, I tend to go in with a test char and have a look at NPC names to get the general atmosphere for names for any particular group my char will belong to.
