Obviously no. But the shield had a defining role at absorbing damage in the right moment. Shields don't absorb a limited amount of energy, they absorb all  of it until they 'die' out, which probably happenned in miliseconds during impact.

Shields don't prtoect you from a closed fist, after all.  Image IPB

That actually has to do with the fist being too near the person, if you read the books.
