Obviously no. But the shield had a defining role at absorbing damage in the right moment. Shields don't absorb a limited amount of energy, they absorb all of it until they 'die' out, which probably happenned in miliseconds during impact.In addition, would any personal shield be strong enough to protect someone from being smacked with a planet?
That actually has to do with the fist being too near the person, if you read the books.Shields don't prtoect you from a closed fist, after all.
