The dwarves are probably the only culture that doesn't have a good comparison to medieval Europe (for obvious reasons, primarily history lacking a good underground empire).

I might add that there is a certain East Asian island nation which was very isolationist in its medieval era. Also, the importance of ones house and family, and the worship of ancestors who became more akin to gods, are strinkingly similar to the moral principle and religious thinking there.
Oh, and the intruding preachers were also cast out brutally at that time. So Thedas basically has tiny, hairy underground-Japanese. ^__^

very very interesting, minor question though, since rivain is modeled loosely after medievel spain, why do all of the antivans we meet in game have spanish accents?

Couldn't they both be modeled off Spain?

I too had been thinking of the similarities between Elves and Jews (and other minorities). I can't see the Dalish as a Medieval European group but I can see them in the context of Jewish history. Look at Ancient History examples where the Jews are forced to fight an encroaching enemy time and time again. However I do have a few problems with this in that 1) Jews did not fight back major enemies in Europe, they were more like "City Elves" 2) i don't think we would see a significant number of Elves in Anderfels unlike the Jews in Germany 3) There weren't as many Jews in England until recently (If I remember correctly) 4) Does that make Arlathan Israel???? O.o

EDIT: In response to #4, Arlathan was near Tevinter and Israel is near where the Byzantine Empire was, somewhat....

EDIT #2: THese aren't so much problems as thoughts. Although as Mr. David Gaider said, it was more of an inspiration than an analogy...

Rivain is loosely based off of Spain only in that Spain was the point of entry for the Moors to enter Europe, and its culture was changed a great deal by the Moorish presence. Beyond that, Rivain doesn't resemble Spain at all and its people are not Spanish-sounding.

Antiva is based loosely on the Italian city-states, such as Venice, and has a very Mediterranean flavor. I wasn't keen on giving them all Italian accents, however, mostly because I feared the possibility of ending up with "mamma mia! pizza pie-a!" kind of silliness. That and I like the Spanish accent (which is also conveniently Mediterranean).

Like to point out it was the Normans who invaded and occupied England and not the French who are completely different. Good ole Will was a Norman.  Posted Image

I'm suprised Antiva is based upon Venice. From Zevran's descriptions of the nation, it sounded so very similar to the Netherlands or the Dutch Republic during the 16th and 17th century.

I think what alot of contributors to this thread are under-estimating is the power of fiction. I expect each nations inspiration was taken from numerous historical sources, not just one particular nation at one particular time of history.

Afterall, how boring would that be?

My favourite little piece of law was the Qunari. They had everything going on. Elements of mongol barbarians aswell as the sophistication of crusade era muslims. Their skin tone and hair styles could be considered to be of african origin, possibly ancient egyptian or something slightly more nomadic.

At the end of the day, being satisfied with 'antiva as italy, orlais as france...' is quite linear and displays a lack of outward thinking imo.

On the other hand Im really looking forward to seeing orlais in any future content, it seems to have the same proximity to feraldan as amn did to baldurs gate. Its a much bigger country with much more potential for adventure and I really hope we get to go there.

To me the Dalish looked like the Celtic tribes, the god they worships seems to be very "nature themed",even the white/deer/unicorn thingy remind me of those stories anyone remember Gwidion(sp?) and such?

That's the best way I can put it right now sorry XD

I agree that there are probably multiple insperations, but I think analysing the paralells is quite fascinating.

on a side note, I just got zevran on my second play through and I'm actually taking to time to get to know him this time and I have to admit, despite his accent, his description of antiva and the crows is eerily reminescent of mevieval/renniassance italy:bandit:

Antivia is more italy than spain, or better it looks as the old marine(?) republics like venice... commercial "countries" whitout an huge army but a lot of power due to their wealth and control of many trade routes
