The statement of "EA that pushes out crap on a daily basis" is simply false. EA produces rock solid games like Dragon Age, Spore, Sports game, and one of the biggest game in history of games "The Sims". They're a big company so it's easy for people like yourself to attack them, but you are simply wrong.
Wow
Dragon Age is made by Bioware not EA - if they get any credit on it then it's for the tiresome issues with launch (still don't have a code for all the DLC I am entitled to) or for the cash-milking release of DLC at launch. No I'm not suggesting they are the only ones that do this.
I don't know Spore so can't comment really but a quick search reveals it's a Maxis game so they get any relevant credit.
"Sports game" well this is where we get into people's main problem with EA. For every great version of FIFA, Tiger Woods etc there are 1 or 2 that are either rubbish or basically re-releases of an almost identical game to milk cash.
The Sims is largely a joke, a game for non-gamers in an era when the video game industry exploded. Again the continuous release of pointless expansions etc to milk a bit more of your precious money comes into play.
I'm sure EA get knocked more than they should do since they are such a massive publisher and as such synonymous with so much that is wrong with the industry. However your defence of them is laughable. The statement you quoted and took issue with seems far more accurate to me than your post.

Jesus, the OP is a fooking MOPE! Learn some tactics, you don't need an AoE.
And by the way, this is a ROLE PLAYING GAME not a MMO turd that requires you to just roll your face over the keyboard to win battles.

If you are whining about balance in a tactical single player game it is because you suck and don't know how to pause, plan and use each member to their fullest. If you wanna be an archer, be one. Plan out your spec before just running into the game so you don't waste points. PLAN! Then pull in a group to balance the game for you.
Aside from that, if you take the time to plan your spec choices you can make any type of character competitive to others. On another side note, exactly what game "ever" has a mage NOT been the most powerful character? That is why they have no health/armor (aka glass cannon). Every class has it's purpose to a degree. You just need to plan ahead. This is not a game that you will just cruise through blindly and never die. Take your time and strategize! That's the whole point!
The thing I love the most about this game is the difficulty. I love wracking my brain to come up with a way to kill that boss that has slaughtered my party 5 times in a row.

If you think the game is too easy and unbalanced then go play tetris!!!! You don't "balance" a magic user!!! They are supposed to be bloody lethal (especially in the world of BA).

Sorta funny.. alot people saying th OP is wrong about mages,,, yet they all say use a mage.... Seems to me the people telling the OP to learn to play need to learn how. Make a party with NO mage NO healer then come back and post how mages arent very very unbalanced.. You might make it on easy or reloading alot on normal... WIth out using the cheat console You can not play this game with out a mage class in the party....
I'm posting this topic again.

IF YOU FIND THE GAME TOO CHALLENGING PLEASE READ ABOVE THREAD
IT HAS INSPIRED ME TO DO A NO MAGE RUN, THEY ARE NO NESSACARY IF YOU PLAN PROPPERLY.

I think I might have expected too much from the company that brought me Mass Effect and Neverwinter Nights. Those games that released with such polish to character balances and the intricacies of each class. After playing DA:O for over 40hrs so far I have found out:
1) The difficulty scale is non-existent: One minute I am rocking the joint, the next slaughtered. I know this has been a consistent problem throughout...my question is why?? Mass Effect had no such bad scaling of difficulty (I have beat it on all difficulties and have multiple characters that I did it with). Why is this broken BioWare? Why?
2) In order for you to succeed without sheer luck you need to have a nuking mage in your party. If I want to roll with an archer, healz, tank and rogue or 2h warrior I am out of luck, becuase one minute I am doing fine than the system spawns 14 archers on me with two yellow shrieks. And of course my archer can't kill one of them by herself (yes by herself, she dies when she faces another archer by herself). Without an AOE mage I am screwed.
3) In order to play on any sort of difficulty I have to roll one of three archetypes: Tank with shield, elemental mage, or dual wield rogue. Why? because a hexing mage falls the same issue my archer does: she sucks, because archers don't do damage, and 2h warriors miss ALL THE TIME (roughly 1/2...the weapon is so big it would be nigh impossible to miss anything!)(even with 48 strength @ lvl 14 and 30 dex)
In conclusion I expected more polish on the character classes in a BioWare game. Maybe it is because they were bought out by such a company like EA that pushes out crap on a daily basis, or they just had too many games on their plate (ME2, DA:O, TOR-The Old Republic)
Or maybe I am just doing something horribly wrong which can be true too...oh I can just respec my party and....oh....
So BioWare please update this game FAST. I would enjoy rolling every single class combination as soon as possible, but when all I can do is sit in the shadow of a mage and plink away with my 2h axe or my mighty bow and arrow, I don't want to play (BTW I have three friends who are playing an elemenatl mage, and dual weapon rogue/warrior and they are doing fine, I mean earthquake>cone of ice>fireball clears 12 archers pretty fast. But it takes 6 min for me to kill them without a nuke mage...wtf....)
You ARE doing something horribly wrong. I'm playing on nightmare and switch my members constantly to try them all out lol. I mean, you have difficulty settings that are available and that you can change at ANY POINT of the game. If its too difficult just change the settings. I havent had any problems without having a ton of caster classes.

I really don't think it's a "Game Balance" issue but more like a player learning curve issue where a player needs to thirlly understand how the game plays and how to micromanage well to survive long. I agree that it would be like my tactics can drop basic 6-10 guys easy one minute but when I deal with 14 or boss fights I am like argh. But when I set my tactics well enough, I do manage to survive but yeah barely. Also at times yes sometimes glitches do kill me as well but most of the time it's just me not setting my tactics up well enough.

Wow..uhm..I finished the game using a Sword and Board warrior, Shale, Wynn as an Arcane Warrior with no DMG spells and Lil as an archer on hard. Oddly enough i had an AoE bomb setup if i needed it with this combo and i found it MORE effective than a casters AoE.
