Bethany/Carver, Varric, Fenris, Aveline, Isabella, Sebastian (if you get the DLC), Merrill, and M!mage. Seems like it'll be eight.

DLC characters shouldn't count. So yeah, 7.

That's good. They spread the butter too thin on the bread with ME2 I think

Morrigan, Alistair, Leliana, Sten, Oghren, Wynne, Zevran, Dog.

Origins only got what, 8? So, it's not that bad. And we might have unannounced characters still, unlikely, but maybe.

He's been said to have his own quests and dialogue.  I fail to see how he "doesn't count".  He can be a party member.

And Shale.  I don't see why DLC characters wouldn't count.  You don't have to have get them, but they still can be party members.

Only? You can only take 3, that's more than enough than you need.

I personally don't see a problem. Mass Effect had only 6 party members while Mass Effect 2 had a total of 12. Bioware games have never had a set number of party members. As long as DA2 provides a diverse, intereresting set of companions, I will be content with 7.

7 party members is already too much for my taste. I want to be able to make good use of everybody without replaying the game three times

I demand no less than twenty companions, each with completely unique abilities and no overlap.

Don't forget that bonus/secret companion... Bioware loves their bonus/secret companions!

And I want cameos of every companion and npc from origins through witch hunt.

Well,Zaeed and Kasumi both had their own quests and dialogues but felt really awkward since you couldn't discuss with them. You still feel that they aren't(on purpose or not)as interesting as original characters.

Because not everyone can have them. They don't count.

Anyhow, there were only eight party members in DAO. There are seven party members in DAII. Not an issue.

And none of them should recycle ANY of the traits that companions in previous games had! Not one! Otherwise it'll prove that Bioware failed to be creative!

I wouldn't be surprised to see another DLC character in the future either. Although I half suspect the DLC plan for DA2 might be a bit busy with bridging DLC that tells the story of what happens after the game (the Mage/Templar/civil war thing is hinted to continue after the game from what I can tell).

Regardless 7 is fine with me, although I wouldn't have minded a less resources intensive character making the cut (like Dog in DAO). Hope there will be a secret companion too, I love me some optional/decision based companions I do.

There's a dog in this one, too, but I'm not sure how often he can be with you. I know he can be at home, or you can call him to your side with a whistle in battle. But I wonder if that means he can travel around with you, like Dog from Origins. Also, this new dog is DLC from the Black Emporium.

I'd prefer to have fewer companions. Have you ever played Chrono Cross? Something like 50+ companions, and they were all shallow and identical. I think the only difference between them was the "accent" in which they spoke.

Agreed!  They were all interesting in their own right, too, but because so many you never did get the impression you knew them very well at all.

Agreed, 6 - 8 is optimum imo... :)

You feel more interested in who they are and more time can be spent on more meaningful dialogue with fewer characters.

Only twenty? make it thirty!

I don't know if there are any more to be announced, although 7 seems appropriate considering they're suppose to be characters with depth. Took me the second play through to acutally befriend all the companions and have them see me in a friend side, so I say it's good enough but more isn't bad either.

It seems like a good number to me. Too few and you are stuck with them, too many and they feel like minor characters. It might be cool if we get some minor/temporary companions on and off throughout the game. Usually those are relegated to the beginning of games/DLC.

One less than origins does not make this thread worthy.

The fewer the better. Gives each one more drama & shenanigans.
