He's been said to have his own quests and dialogue.  I fail to see how he "doesn't count".  He can be a party member.

And Shale.  I don't see why DLC characters wouldn't count.  You don't have to have get them, but they still can be party members.

Because not everyone can have them. They don't count.

Anyhow, there were only eight party members in DAO. There are seven party members in DAII. Not an issue.

Everyone can have Shale or Sebastian.  It's a choice, just like Leliana, Sten, Zevran, dog and Wynne.

Shale is more of a party member than Sten.  She has more dialog and a better personal quest.  Just because Bioware likes to screw people who don't preorder by cutting characters from games and re-adding them as DLC doesn't mean they are any less of a party member.

Except you have to pay for Shale. Not exactly the same thing, mate.

You know, like Minsc, Korgan & Keldorn in BG, Wrex & Garrus in ME + Jacob & Zaeed from ME2 and Oghren, Sten & partially Alistair with Dog from DAO. Here we got only Varrik (who probably will be to much womanized) and Hawke lil bro who will live only in mage walkthrough.

This.

The only real thing I'm a little worried about when it comes to party members is the variety.

I mean, don't get me wrong, we obviously don't know alot about them at this point. However, we do know the basics.

Sibling - Condones harbouring apostates

Isabela - Easy come, easy go. Likely to be a Morrigan sort of person with Zevran mixed in, from my point of view.

Varric - Trade merchant. Getting the impression his morales are far from 'good'.

Fenris - Elf who seems to have suffered terribly at the hands of human experimentation.

Avelin - Disciplined woman, likely religious.

Merril - Dalish elf. Kinda says it all.

Other companion yet to be named - Nothing to say about that at this time.

So.. Out of them all, there looks to be ONE religious character. (Avelin). Since my first run through is going to be a zealous character that dislikes/kills anyone who defys the chant of Light/worship the Maker, it's gunna be pretty lonely. :(

I mean, in Origins, there was a firm divide in the party. It was quite cool, I thought. No matter your characters personality, you would easily relate to atleast two party members, likely 3. So far, from the little information we have, I fear this won't be the case. (Note, I acknowledge this is a really early judgement to make, and I hope/am somewhat sure I'm wrong.)

Well, in Origins, what do we got ?

Morrigan, Alistair, Lelianna, Sten, Whynne, Zevran & Oghren. That's 7 Folks. I did not count the dog because he is just a dog : no quests, no dialogs ("woof !" isn't a dialog), not even really usefull in a fight. So we got, 7 (and half) defaults characters plus 1 dlc and 1 secret (who is an alternate choice replacing another character).

In DA2 do we got : Varric, Isabella, Aveline, Fenris, Merrill, Misterious mage and one of the twins. That's 7 folks. So we got 7 defaults characters plus 1 dlc and probably 1 secret (or you can count the other twin as the "secret" character while you can't have both of them in the same playtrough, kind of like in Origins in fact). :P

So, as far as we know and despite the dog, we have the EXACT same number of characters than in Origins. And we can't be sure there's no more character reveal after "Mistery Mage who seams to be Anders".

Also, you can have a dog in DA2; it just works as a summon during battle rather than being a party member that takes up a character slot.

Why do people keep mentioning the DA2 dog?
The summoned dog is not a party member, people! >.<

I didn't pay for Shale.  Just like I'm not paying for Sebastian.  I paid $49.99 for DAO w/Shale and $49.99 for DA2 w/Sebastian.

"Just because Bioware likes to screw people who don't preorder by cutting characters from games and re-adding them as DLC doesn't mean they are any less of a party member"

Half-assed characters like Zaeed and Kasumi... ok.  But fully integrated character who are fully functional and in the case of Shale, have MORE content and interaction than a none DLC character, definitely counts.

^^^ AND don't forget, having Shale in your party could actually end one of the major quest lines VERY differently...

of course they count. unlike zaeed, you can actually talk to them and they can converse with other members. Getting them is a choice just like leaving sten in his cage

7 companions (I would have been satisfied with 6 even) are plenty! Roll on March, I'm getting uber excited over here!

It is silly to call the dog a summons in DA:O. He is a full party member and dispite what somene said he DOES have a quest. And you can give him gifts and interact with him.

It's a really small quest. Plus, his approval is always 100, the gifts don't have any utility. The only useful thing of Dog's interaction were the items it eventually finds.
edit: and nobody said that Dog was a summon in DAO. They said that there is a summon dog in DA2

The quest actually involves going lots of places. Yeah, nobody said he is a summons in DA:O but they said he does not count as a companion. He is in fact a faithful and loyal companion. He remembers who saved him and is not not fickle unlike certain others. Oh and he does have "dialog." Obviously a dog's mouth is not designed for speaking human words so he does not speak human words.

Only 7?

This kinda innoys me..

let em put it this way would you rather have 30 really shallow partymembers where there was no dialogue or 3 deep characters who had interesting personalities that reflected on you as a person, who had really unique dialogue that was very dependent on who they were?

I'm happy with the number but worried about my ability to select them. I have fears that your choices are confined to certain 'eras' ... (i.e. for Year X your choices are companions A, C, D and E)

You want more? Hell, I would be happy with just 6 Party Members total.

Ever hear the saying, "Quality over Quantity"?

Yeah... I don't want another ME2 where the Squaddies didn't even half the depth and much less dialouge than the much better ME1 Squaddies.

Neither choice is particularly appealing honestly... Out of 3 characters with strong personalities, there's bound to be at least one whom I will loathe for whatever reason...
Seven sounds about alright, but hopefully they don't take it further down for future games.

That said, developing a large set of companions like Mass Effect 2 is only effective (in my opinion) when you're able to maintain your typical depth. The loyalty missions were great, but the lack of party banter and dialogue on the ship left some of the companions feeling a little hollow.

What is fun is having a party composition that you enjoy. Fewer choices = BAD.

If I would enjoy running an all warrior, all rouge or all mage party why not have the party members available to make that possible?

Fewer companions/spells/specializations/races/ect = BAD.  More choices = GOOD.

me= tarzan

you= jane

sorry but I read your post like you were tarzan.  Posted Image

Im actually for more choices but not when it cuts story.  I thought Me2 was shallow with depth but had tons of companions to choose from.

Baldurs Gate had 25.  As we can see, games have regressed since then.  ;)
