I think Virmire should have been more like the suicide mission. You choose which person to lead the teams, and which person to arm the bomb, with three squad choices for each.

Since Wrex could either live or die, he should've been exempt either way. Same with Liara, since you need her for the beacon revelations. (And really, does she know how to lead a team or dismantle a bomb?)

I think Ashley and Kaidan both should've been allowed with either option, to either arm the bomb or lead the team, given their experience in the military. They would have training with either.

Since Garrus worked with C-Sec, he should've been an option to go with the salarians. Since Tali is a tech expert, she should've been an option for the bomb.

Garrus and Wrex would have been much harder for me. I actually don't know who I would have chosen. Maybe that would be the hardest one. Kaidan and Ashley was a sad choice but it wasn't all that hard compared to what it could have been. As much as I hated leaving Kaidan behind, he was never really in contention for being chosen over Ashley. In fact, I probably wouldn't have saved anyone over Ashley on my first playthrough, since she was my love interest. And I would have saved either Garrus or Wrex over the rest. Garrus and Wrex against each other? THAT would be hard.

That makes much more sense and would help Virmire to feel less contrived.

Garrus and Wrex. If Tali had impressed me half as much in ME1 as she did in ME2, though, then Tali and Wrex.

The one presented was pretty tough :(  Unlike many, I really liked Kaiden and, on my first playthrough, chose Ashley as my LI.

But if I had to make a choice that involved Garrus, Tali, or Liara, in any combination, I'd have just quit the game :crying:

If I could've chosen, I would have left Tali. She's the one I like the least of all characters. I don't hate her but I don't like her that much either plus I also hate her missions in ME2 so I wouldn't have to do them if she was killable in ME1.

they all would have been difficult. but if I have to pick from hardest to hard, but not as hard it would have to be

Kaidan-Garrus-Wrex - about evenly split (I would most likely never get past Virmire if this was the actual choice in game, first time I played it) Liara>Ashley>Tali

Tali grew a bit more on me in ME2, but of all the characters, she'd be least difficult to let go of. Liara is..well I can relate to her on some levels - she reminds me a little bit of me, the way I used to be when I was younger. Ash is spunky and kinda vicious sometimes, but she's honest and once you get to know her, she really does mean well - if she weren't written the way she was, I probably wouldn't' have had any playthroughs were she survived, but she really does grow on you, if you talk to her enough.

For me the hardest was Ash or Kaidan, Ash always won hands down but I liked them both so much. If it had of been anyone else I would of been happier, the easiest would of been any combination with Tali, really still dont like her.

Ash and Kaidan were hard but I think Liara and Kaidan would have been harder. The easiest to leave behind would have been Tali.

I would left Wrex and Liara with Kaidan, went for Ashley with Garrus and Tali and go back for them since Wrex is too badass to die and only Shepard can kill him( ASHLEY NEVER IN MY PLAYTROUGH'S!) and Liara is only Mass Effect character that can't die.

Everyone lives.

Garrus or Tali... ugh that would've been horrible.

Wrex had his chance to die though so I can't really picture him getting potentially screwed over twice there. I wouldn't have left him anyway.

I feel bad about it, but leaving Kaidan or Liara would be the easiest for me, and then Ashley. Any combination of Garrus, Tali, and Wrex though would've been horrible. I don't even want to think about it...

Anyway, the order for me from hardest to leave to least hardest would be:

Tali > Garrus > Wrex > Ashley > Liara > Kaidan

I know a lot of people disliked Tali because she was basically a walking codex in the first game, but I still thought personality-wise she was the most likeable character along with Wrex.  She was just... so nice, I couldn't have left her... and she gives you all the backstory on the Geth and Quarian conflict, so although her conversations weren't always the most interesting, they were still important.  Too bad it hindered fleshing out her character... Garrus was basically a yes-man in the first game, but he was still good and all.  Wrex is awesome and all but I could picture myself leaving him there... maybe because he seems like the type who'd like to go out in a big explosion, I guess.  Ashley has a great character, but I never thought she was too likeable so I don't have too much of a problem leaving her.  But Kaidan is pretty bland and seemed like he was only there to give backstory on human biotics and to be Mr. Neutral.  And Liara... she's okay I guess, I never really cared for her though.  She's probably up there with Jacob and Kaidan as my least favorite squadmates (although they are all still good).

Hmmm...reading through the comments...I think BioWare made a good choice making you to choose between Ash and Kaidan

I'm not a fan of people wanting the option of killing off only the people they didn't like and fixing the game so that all their favorites live. In a game that is supposed to simulate combat, that has never really rung true for me. I realize that it would be impossible to make a character that EVERY player loves or hates (even Jacob and Conrad Vernor have both fans and detractors), but I'd have loved, from a dramatic role-playing standpoint, to have been forced into situation where it is IMPOSSIBLE to save everyone, either by choice like Virmire or random deaths like the suicide mission. Yes, there would be babies whining about losing their favorites, but they need to change their diapers and realize that Bioware can make a better "mature" video game by giving us deaths that have meaningful emotional impact.

I agree with that. ^ I hope in the new game, they just throw difficult decision after difficult decision at you.

on one hand, I agree that making this sort of choice makes for a more dramatic game and kinda brings home to you that this world you're playing through, is at war. on the other hand, this being a game and as such - a piece of entertainment, most people want a fantasy, a place where they can actually feel strong, rather then helpless (and inability to save characters no matter what you do invokes a sense of helplessness). just look at all the people who support skimpy outfits and tiny face masks in space and combat. they could care less if it actually makes any sense. and as much as I scoff at that, I can in a way understand them.

Virmire was bad enough. If ME3 has another virmire, or several of those, I don't think I'll ever buy another bioware game sight unseen.

If Bioware can't make a game that makes you feel happy about saving the galaxy despite feeling sorry about the necessary sacrifices it took to save it, then they have failed as "mature" game makers. Or we've failed as fans.

Abispa I'm afraid its just really too much to ask for. they are very very good game makers. they get us to care about the characters they create, well some of us anyways. and because of that - most sacrifices we make will be meaningful, they will be hard and the truth is, we might be playing commander Shepard but we aren't commander Shepard. for an average person, its extremely hard to make a decision of who lives or dies and then remain happy despite it. And yes, its a game and the characters are not real, but for those moments you play the game - it leaves an impact and for me, mars the enjoyment of the game. which means I won't be replaying it, and will have to double check in a future whether the game I'm buying will put me in front of that sort of choice - now that I know that bioware characters end up as something more then just interchangeable pixels for me.

If the deaths are NOT specifically predetermined, the replay value is in finding out how a decision can lead to different outcome. Maybe this person would have survived if I told TIM to go to hell. Maybe Miranda (ick) will still love me if I quit being a Specter. Perhaps my Engineer could save Tali where my Soldier failed. Would a grateful Rachni Queen helped me save a few thousand more lives on Earth? Each Shepard story I make would be unique and more meaningful.
