I can't believe I never noticed this before, I feel like a massive idea. But I'm either semi-colour blind or the Qunari no longer have bronze skin. This... bothers me far far more than the horns

I like how everyone rationalizes this. The truth is Bioware completely changed everything about the Qunari. However Bioware want to explain it that is the truth. Continuity be damned. I am not saying this is good or bad. Just that this is what happened and we have to accept it.

Yes? Of course we've changed how they look. Considering how many things are changing all at once, it's not like up is now down and nothing will ever make sense again, if that's what you're implying. Primarily this is a shift in style... and in the case of the qunari we are also saying (despite the fact that we could have not done so, had we wished) that the old skin color and lack of horns is also part of the lore and you will no doubt see both again.

Isn't that just one of those things that you say though? Like "We may return to a silent protagonist system in future titles" and such? We won't really get both styles of Qunari or silent protagonists.

If we didn't intend to do so, why would we bother saying that they still exist? We're not explaining the darkspawn, after all-- that's simply a new look. You won't see both styles of qunari in DA2, but we fully intend to have hornless/bronze qunari again in the future... and possibly other variations of qunari as well. They possess visual variation the same way humans do.

Because Gaider himself has said that if Sten were to make an appearance he would have the grey skin and more apeish physique.

I did not say that. I said that Sten would take on the physical characteristics of the new qunari-- look at the model and how it differs from human at its base-- but that Sten would also be hornless and probably bronze.

If I say things like "probably" or soften my words in other ways, it's because we haven't done it yet. People like to take even descriptions of our intent as iron-clad promises, so we avoid saying that we are doing things until we've already done them. If you choose to doubt our intent until and unless we do, that's fine by me.

Thats how I feel with the whole Hot Rod Samurai redesign- its not a notable improvement really, its a sidestep if anything. Its like stuff just looks different for the sake of looking different, without much rhyme or reason other than to look different than Origins.

I think you're missing the point. Which really shouldn't surprise me, I suppose, but it's there nevertheless.

Read any interview with Matt Goldman, our Art Director. The point was not to look different than Origins, but to establish a visual identity that Dragon Age lacked in Origins. Origins looked great-- it did not look distinct. It was also inconsistent from one are of the game to the next.

Someone can opine on how much they don't like the new look until they're blue in the face... that doesn't really change the fact that the art team has done what it set out to do, and it has nothing to do with phrases like "Hot Rod Samurai" -- which, frankly, says more about how you identify with being uncool than it does about our need to gain 'cool points' by changing the look of our own vision.

How did Origins look inconsistent? I'm not an art person or anything, but the "flow" of Origins art didn't seem too bad to me. That being said, I don't think DA2 looks bad at all despite the clear differences in style.

Origins didn't look bad. It looks great. That said, it was impossible to look at screenshots of Origins and say "that looks like Dragon Age" unless you were already familiar with the game. Not only that, you could look at screenshots of different parts of Dragon Age and think they were from different games-- that's the inconsistent part. There was no unifying "look".

Is the look intended to be for the people who already knew what Dragon Age was? No, not really-- I mean, of course we hope that people who played Origins like it, but the change isn't for them. Which, of course, is the route for a lot of scoffing and anger... because if it's not for the faithful than it must be terrible, right?

I think on this point we're just going to have to be resigned to the idea that some people will cling to points of lore as being inviolate sacred cows, no matter how minor the point and even if nobody else really cares-- such as the people who made the game in the first place. And that this does not mean that it's now going to change on a daily basis, reality makes no sense, cats will now look like dogs, etc. etc.

DA2 doesn't look all that distinct either, you could mistake it for a WOW  expansion with the cartoony visual style.

Sylized art does not equal "cartoon".

Brighter colors and more 'pop' does not equal "cartoon".

The only thing cartoonish here is the hyperbole.

The blight is invading, the world is at war, Oh hey look sunshine and rainbows and puppies! Sorry for having a personal perference for the old art style that wasn't all bright and shiny.

So... from this I gather you compare the art style in DA2 to rainbows and puppies? It's bright and shiny?

looks at the game he's playing

Yes, I think I can see how someone who calls the Origins art style "dark and gritty" would say that.

Yes they had to rely on WRITING and a creating a culture that expressed their race rather than having a big sign saying "Hi we're a different race here!"

And now we have both.

It wasn't an exchange. We didn't give up anything. Unless you really think qunari looking human was a virtue.
