Thats not what I said, DA2 has a very WOW vibe to the visuals imo.

Your avatar is more of a WoW like visual than anything I've seen of DA2.

How is explaining that bright colors do not make something a cartoon, "elitist?"

Because the game looks more cartoon like with the new art style, as opposed to the dark and grittyness of Origins. Thats how it looks to me anyway.

I think on this point we're just going to have to be resigned to the idea that some people will cling to points of lore as being inviolate sacred cows, no matter how minor the point and even if nobody else really cares-- such as the people who made the game in the first place.

Not everyone considers the creators' views of their own property sacrosanct. When creators tell their fans something along the lines of "well, we thought these changes were good ideas, so you should all accept them" they come across as insensitive to their fanbase's concerns. People can get extremely invested in their fictional universes. They see it as much their world to play around in as the creators'. Claiming it is still your world even though it definitely is, will not console anyone if they perceive changes as inconsistent or illogical given what was established earlier.

That bit of musing on fandom culture aside, I do agree DA2's redesigns are distinct. I may not be excited about how Qunari look now, but it would be delusional of me to claim their change is not distinctive. If that was the art department's goal, they definitely succeeded; everyone's personal tastes notwithstanding.

DA2 doesn't look all that distinct either, you could mistake it for a WOW  expansion with the cartoony visual style.

Er... I'm not a fan of all the art changes (though I do like the "new" Qunari), but it looks nothing like WOW.  Why so hostile?  Are you just trolling at this point?  Critique but at least make sense if you're going to do it.

Still don't see how that makes Gaider's comments 'elitist.'

Those two aren't either end on any sliding scale.

Indeed!  All subtlety should be thrown out of this game and anything that isn't S-P-E-L-T out in B-I-G L-E-T-T-E-R-S and identifiable and understood upon fist glance should be be redesigned until they are.

The blight is invading, the world is at war, Oh hey look sunshine and rainbows and puppies! Sorry for having a personal perference for the old art style that wasn't all bright and shiny.

Well, the colors are more pronounced, so it is a little less dark (at least from what I've seen thus far).

But there aren't any sunshine and rainbows and puppies.  Heck, it doesn't even look that bright.

And again, sliding scale, or lack thereof.

The actual blighted lands (as in Lothering) are bright and shiny?

Edit: Changed city.

So... from this I gather you compare the art style in DA2 to rainbows and puppies? It's bright and shiny?

looks at the game he's playing

Yes, I think I can see how someone who calls the Origins art style "dark and gritty" would say that.

I think in terms of colors, DA2 seems to be going for more vibrant colors like WoW- which isn't necessarily bad, but isn't necessarily good either.

To the extent that some of the screens of DA2 remind me of poorly calibrated HDTVs that sit in Best Buy with the contrast ramped up over 9000 and the colors melt your eyeballs. At least in some of the DA2 screens, the colors "popping" more just looks odd, almost like any lighting doesn't apply to those certain colored objects and it just ends up looking odd more than anything, like when every red colored object seems like it has its own light source or the blue parts of Isabela's outfit.

I don't see how the plot premise has any effect on the art style.

It doesn't.  The Witcher 2 is utilizing more color too. (Don't hate me for bringing TW2 into the discussion.)

Well, I would disagree with you there.  BUt let's examine the claims of brightness.

Bright?  Really?

Not much brightness going on here either.
