It doesn't.  The Witcher 2 is utilizing more color too. (Don't hate me for bringing TW2 into the discussion.)

*hates you*

It doesn't have to, but style can be a useful tool for expressing an atmosphere.

I'm sorry, but I prefer my 'friends' shirtless, waving giant leafs at me so I won't feel too hot because of the sun.

Just ask Dave of Canada or Upsetty.

The only thing the art style changed, in my opinion, is it makes things pop-out more if that makes any sense.

The Qunari look a little weird from what Sten looked like and Qunari Mercenary Man #17. Beyond the Qunari thoguh, we are going to a different part of Thedas. Ferelden always felt like it was dirty and run down so to speak. Mostly farmholds and open country with small villages. And Denerim reminded me of one of those cities that grew fast and somewhat randomly around Fort Drakon.

But that doesn't mean shiny cities can't exist elsewhere. And I'm sure parts of Kirkwall are run down and a mess. The big slave processing square is the headquarters of the Templars so that would be clean looking. Lowtown and such is probably messy looking.

Yeah, he tells us about this same fantasy too.  Though Dave and I just prefer central air conditioning.

Er... I'm not a fan of all the art changes (though I do like the "new" Qunari), but it looks nothing like WOW.

I think in terms of colors, DA2 seems to be going for more vibrant colors like WoW- which isn't necessarily bad, but isn't necessarily good either.

I haven't seen that.  Clothing colors seem quite muted, for instance.  I do see color contrast, like bright red splashes or Sebastian's eyes which are glowing blue (unless that is a tip to the VA!).  They haven't been glaring, though.  I would still prefer a more realistic direction a la Skyrim, but can't say that I'm seeing what you're seeing.

I despise that virutally every game nowadays has a colour palette consisting of brown, gray and more brown, so I welcome more colours.

That doesn't have any bearing on completely changing the way races/people look like though.

I really don't see the problem with the Qunari re-design, they needed to seem like city takers, and the ogres had horns which didn't make much sense.

To those complaining of a ret-con:
Who would you send to survey a potential target? The guy with horns or the one without?

And as for the new armor style:

How do we know that's how ALL Qunari garb themselves? It seems to me at least that the Qunari we've seen are the elite, the vanguards. Many warrior cultures had their finest fighters in little armor, for example the celts of the Maori.

Indeed!  All subtlety should be thrown out of this game and anything that isn't S-P-E-L-T out in B-I-G L-E-T-T-E-R-S and identifiable and understood upon fist glance should be be redesigned until they are.

Yep. I am an idiot for wanting different species to actually, y'know, look different. Whatever you need to tell yourself buddy.

Oh, and you seem to be forgetting that in Origins it is spelled out that quanri are a different species. It has to be, because they can't rely on the visuals to tell that part of the story.

Has anything been shown from there other than a wall-carving and a dragon? Just asking.

I think this was more evident in some of the older screens where it didn't seem the lighting was present, but this screen, which I think is more recent has the red everywhere.

It doesn't look bad, but the red seems a bit much maybe? Between the flags, blood and templars all wearing that bright red. Maybe its just that those bold colors just seem sort of flat and without much lighting applied to them or they're too saturated?

Its a nitpick- I 'm fine with more color so long as they work on the lighting system. That was my biggest gripe with Origins was that the lighting wasn't very good at all and in addition to a lack of nicer post processing effects and shaders, made everything seem flat and less dramatic compared to the concept art.

And yes, Skyrim is probably more in terms of what I wanted out of DA, art wise :wizard:

I'm not totally sold on the shift in art style overall, but I have to admit I kinda like the Qunari redesign. And the fact that bronze hornless Qunari aren't retconed out of existence made the transition a great deal less irritating for me. So I don't really mind the new Qunari. I might have if the lore now said sometihng silly like "Sten always had horns. Don't you remember?" but it doesn't.

Yes they had to rely on WRITING and a creating a culture that expressed their race rather than having a big sign saying "Hi we're a different race here!"

And now we have both.

It wasn't an exchange. We didn't give up anything. Unless you really think qunari looking human was a virtue.

I didn't have any problem with it when playing the game. I never gave it a thought until reading these forums. Sten's look is certainly perferable than the silly looking demons.

I just have to jump in here and say that I do like what I've seen of the new art style. The qunari do look more distinctive and interesting, the elves look more distinctive, the architecture is more striking, and colors are more vivid from what I've seen.

As for the Qunari, I can't get passed how...banal...they looked in Origins (all three of them). They looked like big humans with a slightly different colored skin. I enjoy the lore of Dragon Age a lot, but I'm not opposed to changes being made, especially to things that were so limited (such as our exposure to Qunari).

I love the implication that WoW invented the use of colour, and that by using it you are in some way copying them.

I love the new Qunari model personally. Looks very detailed, like a living sculpture. If you have ever seen some of the really cool work done using ZBrush, it kind of reminds me of that level of sculpted detail as opposed to have the majority of the texture painted on, yet flat. Super cool.

Edit: my husband, sci-fi fan extreme just likened the change to the change they made in the klingon design, over time between the original and next generation....progress is yes, different, but good.    I had to look it up:

And having to rely completely on one tool of several is bad.

There are many ways to convey information and tell stories in games, relying purely on writing is simply failing to use all of your tools correctly.
