Not sure why you couldn't say that about DAO -- i can't really think of any other game that'd look close enough to it to make me actually confuse them.

Its not about any-other-game and confusing DAO with it. It more about the look that is expected from LOTResque type game. And DAO has that look, in one of the blogs I am reading people protested against DA2 art style change because "I do not feel like i am at home now, like in DAO, where it was almost like middleearth!"

You know I don't think the dragon age 2 pictures we've seen so far are "puppy dogs and rainbows" or bright and shiney, but then I didn't think Origins looked particulariy gritty in appearance either.

They both look pretty normal, and quite nice to me.

But hey, what do I know?

I'm glad Qunari got a redesign. My first playthrough of DA:O I didn't even realize Qunari were an entirely different race than human. I thought it was a cultural distinction, like the Chasnid. Sten just looked like a 'big guy' to me. It was a long time before I noticed the slight point on his ears.

The new look is much more distinctive and ties in well to their ogre connection.

Well, as long as the supposed logic behind the changes is "we want people be able to tell it's DA2" then i'd say not being able to confuse what one gets to see with another product is very much what it's about.

This is quite different imo, since it then becomes more about disassociating your game from specific look than just creating something that can be easily recognized. You don't need to dress your game trolls/ogres in stockings from Victoria's Secret to achieve the latter, but granted it is an easy way to achieve the former.

Yep its about not to look like LOTR. Because yes, in the "box' of the game Tedas is anti middleearth but with the picture of middleearth on the cover of its "box". For some it is interesting and intriguing solution as "take it elves ha-ha in this mirror-middleearth you are nothing etc." but for some it is misleading.

The blight is invading, the world is at war, Oh hey look sunshine and rainbows and puppies! Sorry for having a personal perference for the old art style that wasn't all bright and shiny.

So... from this I gather you compare the art style in DA2 to rainbows and puppies? It's bright and shiny?

looks at the game he's playing

Yes, I think I can see how someone who calls the Origins art style "dark and gritty" would say that.

If you want dark and gritty.... just play the night time instead of the day map!

DA:O’s combat while implement brilliantly was pretty much exactly what you would expect from a strategy rpg. The word in general while done very well and with some original points was largely looked like your typical Tolkien style fantasy settings with a bit of a darker tone that usual. The hurlocks now look like corpses? Yeah well before they looked like orcs. Yes I can identify a DA:O screenshot however it is still similar to many other fantasy games have seen. I'm pretty sure I could identify a DA 2 screenshot form what I have seen already even tho I have never played it.

Take small amounts of footage from any game and you will be able to point to other games that are similar. You get common elements in games A) because these things work and B) its a big goddam world, pretty much everything has been done. You realy don’t get games or movies where you can look at the entire thing and go wow absolutely everything in this is truly unique and original and you can’t even begin to compare it to anything else. It just doesn’t happen. The trick to creating something with a unique feel is taking different elements and combining them in interesting ways or putting a new spin on them and maybe adding a few things that have truly never been done before but  its hard make an entire game off things that have never been done before . The fact the you're pointing at so many different games instead of just one from what little we have seem is a point in the games favor.

The difficulty that I have with that is supposedly these changes were to make things more "distinct". Throwing things from many different games in a pile and stirring doesn't make for "distinct". It lends itself to playing "I think I know where they got *this* from" though. So far the trailers and teasers haven't shown much that says "Oh, that has to be DA2" besides the qunari with horns [that has no reference in the original game afaik] and the new "rip your enemies apart" bloodmage spell. And a rogue that fights in a long shirt, a thong, and high boots.
