Every time I start up Mass Effect 2, it rearranges several of my desktop icons (Alien Swarm, Left 4 Dead, and Batman Arkham Asylum demo, all on Steam).  It always puts them into the same configuration, and switches them around even after I change them back.  Is this a known issue?  How would I remedy this?

Is ME2 running on a different resolution than your Windows desktop? Switching resolutions is a common cause for icon mess. Either run ME2 in a window, or in the same resolution as your desktop. Unfortunately I don't remember where these settings can be found. EIther in the config utility in the game's main folder or in-game under EXTRAS > OPTIONS > GRAPHICS or similar.

Yeah, it's in a different resolution, but putting it in the same resolution makes it run slow as hell.  My computer is 1280 x 1024, and Mass Effect 2 is 800 x 600.  I'm pretty sure I've been able to run other games in different resolutions without them messing with my desktop icons.

Have you tried starting the game directly from the .exe in the Binaries folder, rather than from the launcher? If it's something about the launcher causing this, that could be the solution.

This is a Windows problem, not an ME2 problem. As Bravenu3 suggested, it happens when you run programs that are in a different resolution to your desktop. Take it up with Microsoft.

Like I said, I've been able to run other games in different resolutions with no problems whatsoever.

There is nothing in the ME command structure to tell the desktop to re-arrange the desktop. Think of it as one of those undocumented featuerd that Windows has.
Using "auto arrange icons" and "align to grid" will semi-fix the problem for you, but you then have to be happy with the way Windows arranged the icons by name and type.

Edit: If running at native resolution makes ME2 run sluggish, and 800x600 is your only option, I suggest upgrading your hardware, as it sounds like you have a system thats barely capable of running it in the first place. I also, noticed you havent registered your game on the forum. Are you running a legit version, or something torrented? If legit, then placate us by registering, and posting your specs, and we may find further ways to help. If torrented, go away and sort it out yourself.

The System Requirements are based on that particular Medium Screen Resolution setting.  A Low-End graphics card that meets the required Minimum performance level should be able to run at 35 FPS with Low Quality image settings and the Medium Resolution.

                    ME2

PC MINIMUM System Requirements
OS = Windows XP SP3 / Windows Vista SP1 / Windows 7
Processor = 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or equivalent AMD CPU
Memory = 1 GB RAM for Windows XP / 2 GB RAM for Windows Vista and Windows 7
Hard Drive = 15 GB
DVD ROM = 1x Speed
Sound Card = DirectX 9.0c compatible
Direct X = DirectX 9.0c August 2008 (included)
Input = Keyboard / Mouse
Video Card = 256 MB (with Pixel Shader 3.0 support). Supported GPU Chips: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or greater; ATI Radeon X1600 Pro or greater. Please note that NVIDIA GeForce G.210, 310, 6800 SE, 6800 XT, 7100, 7200, 7300, 7400, 7500, 8100, 8200, 8300, 8400, 9100, 9200, and 9300; ATI Radeon X1300, X1550, HD 2400, 3100, 3200, HD 3450, HD 3470, HD 4200, HD 4250, HD 4350, and (probably) HD 5450 are below minimum system requirements. Updates to your video and sound card drivers may be required. Intel  and S3 video devices are not officially supported in Mass Effect 2.

Yeah, it's a legit retail copy, and I upgraded my compy once and will NEVER do that again.  It's a hell of a lot harder to look for parts when you have a slimline.  I got a 512 mb Nvidia Geforce 9400 GT, and when ME2 is in 800 x 600, it pretty much looks fine.

There is a neat little tools that might help you work around this problem: Stardock Fences. I have used it for quite a while now and can say, that it keeps the icons organized as you specified, even if the desktop resolution changes erratically.

Thanks.  Does the free version do that as well?

Try it out ;-) According to www.stardock.com/products/fences/information_pro.asp it's not included in the Pro version's exclusive features, ergo it must be available in the Free version as well.

Hi, this is my first time posting here.

I agree that it's a changing resolution problem. Just try changing your desktop resolution to 800 x 600 and then back to 1280 x 1024 and I'll bet you that your icons get rearranged the exact same way. A lot of games do this, but not every game.

Stardock Fences looks pretty cool, but I've always liked "LAYOUT.DLL". It's a very small program that lets you save and restore your icon layout. Basically, you save your desktop layout once, and whenever your icons get rearranged, just right-click on "My Computer" (or "Computer" in Vista/7) and hit "Restore Desktop" and everything is back to normal.

"LAYOUT.DLL" only works on 32-bit Windows, but someone went and made one for 64-bit Windows and called it "dips64". Here's the link with instructions for both:

http://www.howtogeek...-windows-vista/

I know the link says "Vista", but it works for XP and Windows 7 as well. If you have Windows XP 32-bit (for example), get Layout.zip. If you have WIndows 7 64-bit (also an example), get setup.exe.

Oh yeah, it's completely free. Layout.dll was made by Microsoft and came from the Windows Resource Kit.
