You want them to pop back up like in the OC, but you want it to take a few minutes instead of right after the battle?
I imagine that there is a way to put a delay on the command that pops them back to life. I don't have access at the moment but I would guess that the command is in ginc_death, which is probably an include for your module on player death script and your companion on death script. So it may be enough to change it in ginc_death and then recompile the other two scripts.
I would think though that such a real-world time-based penalty would be more of an irritant than anything else.
I implemented the SoZ Death system in my campaign so that resurrection would be required and I use a custom DeathScript so that a small xp penalty is applied when a character dies.

Yeah, I thought about using the SoZ system and may still. I just wasn't keen on the idea of having to run back to town everytime someone got killed for a res from the local priest or "convienently" finding res scrolls just lying around in a mine or dungeon.
However, I did make a crate marked "1st aid kit" and put it in one of the locked storage rooms with a cure light wounds scroll and a couple of potions in it. I guess I could take those out and drop in a Res scroll or two.
